Sweet home Chicago for Peppers, Kampman? DEs coveted by Bears

By Jason La Canfora

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for a major run at Julius Peppers, a league source said Tuesday, and Aaron Kampman also is an option for a team that's intent on landing a pass-rushing defensive end this offseason.

Peppers, who will not receive the Carolina Panthers' franchise tag, is the Bears' prime target. However, Peppers will not come cheap -- he was seeking around $40 million guaranteed from the Panthers. The Bears traditionally are a frugal team, but in this limited free-agent market, they are prepared to jump into the sweepstakes for Peppers, who had 81 sacks in eight seasons with the Panthers.

Kampman, who struggled to switch from end to linebacker in the Green Bay Packers' new 3-4 defense, also is someone the Bears are high on, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The Bears know Kampman well from their intense NFC North rivalry games against the Packers.

Chicago's defense ranked 17th in the NFL last season, and coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo need improvement to ease questions about their job security. After mulling whether or not to part with higher-priced defensive veterans such as linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs and tackle Tommie Harris, Bears management has decided to keep that core together and try to add playmakers through free agency.

Pass-rushing end Gaines Adams passed away last month, and Adewale Ogunleye is unlikely to return, according to a source. The Bears plan to make Mark Anderson the starter at left defensive end, with Israel Idonije providing competition, but the team still needs impact players at the position.

Now, I'd be glad to see Kampman go, but I wouldn't like to face him twice a year. Either of them would be pretty scary in Chicago, though. They're elite rushers (Peppers is a bit better... if he wants to) and our O-line is far from elite right now.

Kampman makes more sense. The Bears just don't pay for top free agents. Although, it's kinda interesting that they're trying to recreate the Brett Favre and Reggie White magic with Jay Cutler and Julius Peppers. I think Peppers is landing in New England, Philly, or Atlanta. My guess is Atlanta.

I find it funny that they're trying to push every last bit out of that 2006 SB team. Kampman is getting up there in age. Peppers is a little younger, but has hit 30, as well.

I know that they aren't RBs and have enough left in the tank, but both guys look like picks you would make to put your team over the top, not some pick-ups a rebuilding franchise makes.

I think that the Bears are overrating their defense. They have a lot of guys who are just passed their prime. They should stock up on young talent, maybe trade away a guy or two. Briggs would be great trade bait. Built around Tommie Harris. Don't cling onto this 2006 SB defense. Start over and built around Cutler on offense and Harris on defense.

The way they're playing it now, they'll keep getting one step behind the rest of the NFC North. That gap at DE will be back soon enough if you sign a 30 year old, but in a year or 3, you'll be looking for a new MLB, CB #1, CB#2, OLB etc, while still having some work to do on the offensive side of the ball. And most likely they will not've won a SB in that timespan.

^ All true points Rock, but I think it's desperation time for coach Lovie and GM Angelo.

They gave up a lot of early draft picks to get Cutler and the late Adams.

Now they're looking at a season where they need to win, and they clearly need to infuse talent without having top picks. They desperately need a DE who can make an immediate impact... if for nothing else than to save the jobs of the front office and/or coaching staff.

It'll be really interesting to see how much the Bears are willing to spend considering there is no cap this year.

I agree with Porky that Kampman would make the most sense. Maybe they can get him a bit cheaper considering he is coming off injury. As a Packer fan though, I'd much rather prefer to not have to face a very good player like Kampy twice a year.

Especially if our RT spot is as unsettled as it was last year. That's a disaster waiting to happen.

If they end up with one of those guys, I sure hope it's Peppers. We all know the old adage about a fat d-lineman getting paid huge who then stops working hard. Well Peppers isn't fat, but he's about as lazy as it gets.

Kampman makes a whole lot of sense for just about any 4-3 team out there.

It all hinges on the progress of his recovery.

The pool of available talent arguably starts with him, not Peppers, imo. -from a front office perspective- if Kampy looks like he can go.

Would anyone ever worry about Kampy, $$$ and motivation?

What allabout said about coach Lovie, Angelo, and the lost draft picks for the Bears has to put them on the top of prospective destinations, but I have no doubt that every single 4-3 team is going to look very hard at him.

I think Kampy is going to be scarfed very fast by someone.

That's true. I think that old man Ford had the right idea, but just the wrong person. Give these guys some time to rework this franchise, rather than putting a band-aid on at one position.

I dont see why they wouldnt take Kampy, as its been said da Bears need to get something done to take them from 3rd in the NFCN, and getting some vets in like Peppers and Kampy would only help the team even if as a band aid to work the youngsters next season if they stay around.

I think the possibility of the Bears grabbing Kampman are pretty good being they screwed the pooch giving away any chance at getting younger through the draft when they picked up Cutler.

I said when they did that they better win right now because they have a lot of older players on that roster and it will take awhile before they can rebound because they don't have the young talent prepared to step in and take over.

Bears fans, can you spell c-e-l-l-a-r because I feel that's where you are going to be finding yourself for several years ahead. All because of misreading where the team was at and being convinced a QB at any cost would do the trick. They simply gave up way to much for a franchise QB when they weren't even close to competing for the big prize. Especially when the QB isn't all that anyhow.

Kind of weird that by trading for Cutler it now puts Kampman closer to a Bears uniform. Strange how things you never think of initially lead to results you never would have considered at the time.

If I were Kampy I would find another place to play. That city is brutal when they lose and they will be doing plenty of that for awhile.

Just another NFC North team picking another Packer away. I don't want Chicago to sign Kampman, but there season has more to do with what Jay Cutler does than who they get. I don't think they have the coaches on the offensive side of the ball to get the most out of Cutler. They need their Mike Holmgren or Mooch.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?

dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
