As much as it galls me to see a highly-drafted and highly-paid player not contributing, I think Harrell makes the team.

Firstly, CaliforniaCheez's analysis of the situation is very correct. We don't need Harrell to set the world on fire for us to play good D. And with Jolly gone for the year, Harrell won't get the axe because of a numbers game.

Secondly, I'm sure the coaches and staff hate seeing him on the sidelines even more than we do. If they didn't think he was worth hanging onto for a while longer, then he'd have already been Turk-ed. Think the Vikings were wise to part ways with Gilbert Brown?

These are not the GM-and-HC Mike Sherman days - the Packers have shown that we don't hang on to players too long for sentimental reasons. They're the ones who see him every day. They're the ones who get paid to evaluate talent and make hard decisions. If they think he's worth the wait, neither Wondermouse nor we fans have much reason to disagree.

Do I feel sorry for Harrell? No not really for reasons already stated.

However, there is a difference between Tony Mandarich and Justin Harrell. Harrell has been hurt. He hasn't seen the field, but when he's on the field, I've seen more out of him than C.J. Wilson or Jarius Wynn.

Mandarich was a complete bust. He couldn't cut it as a LT. He ended up in Indy as a guard and was alright for awhile, but there is a difference between the two players. One is a bust because of skill and the other is a bust because of injury.

I pretty much agree with what CaliforniaCheez said.

I think they'll keep six or seven DL. Seven with Toribio, who I've been impressed enough with to keep on the team. Right now, you can only justify Wilson or Wynn above Harrell because of injuries/confidence.

Also, Mandarich was a bust because he couldn't sneak the steroids past the NFL like college. It was well documented and he admitted to such. That also makes a huge difference between him and Harrell.

If someone has any kind of evidence that suggest Harrell isn't the 5th best DL on the roster, then we have something to talk about. I think we keep 6 this year: Pickett, Raji, Jenkins, Neal, Harrell, and Toribio. The rotation is up to their coach. If Jolly wasn't such a dumbass, then I'm on board with shitcanning Harrell, but we don't have much choice do we?

For where Harrell was drafted, he is a bust; but he same can be said for Hawk. Anything from Harrell this season is gravy. I just hope none of the starters have any season ending injuries. We have lived without d-line depth for quite some time now.

I don't particularly feel sorry for JH. As Rourke points out, he's had 15 million of salary that most people never get.

Yes. someone please give me $15 million then you can "hurt my feelings" all you want. Every time you TRY to insult me, I'll just respond the same thing - "I got $15 million to do practically nothing, you're still working that same job you hate."

Cry me a river. He's got $15 million. If he can't play, give the roster spot to someone who can.

Now I hope he is 100% because I heard he has sick talent, but we need people who every week, the number under the G column increments by one.

Currently, we have a guy who has 13 Gs since 2007. I want MM to keep his word about players having to have "availability." Guys like Al Harris work their tails off to come back from injuries AND manage to do it. Woodson everyone thought was washed up and now he's headed to a Hall of Fame career. Driver has taken hits that would have ended other WRs confidence and he gets back up, shakes it up, and catches the next pass. Harrell historically misses games. Not being mean. Just being honest. Availability is not something Harrell seems to have.

$15 million for 13 games over 3 seasons?

By that standard, Harrell is one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in league history.

It's an uncapped year, don't care about the money. Keep the 7 best defensive linemen (and take avaivability into consideration). If he makes the roster he makes it. No bust status should affect his position with the team right now.

I guess I wasn't clear. To me, the amount of money Harrell has received to date is irrelevant. So is whether he has shown himself worthy of the 16th pick in the draft a few years ago.

To me, DakotaT has the correct standard to apply here. Are there five (or six, depending on how many DL one keeps) DL currently on the roster, or available after cuts on other teams, that offer more than Harrell does. If yes, he goes. If no, he stays.

If its 5, then its Harrell v. Toribio. If it's six, then its either Harrell v. Wilson or Harrell v. Talley or Harrell v. someone yet to be named.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I'm with this. The rancor this guy gets for being unfortunate enough to have a serious back injury is unfair - not in the sense that anyone's hurting the guy's feelings, but in the sense that he's not the cause of any of this. He's a guy with a bad back who got drafted higher than he should have been. I think Thompson would probably agree with that, privately.

But he's playing now, did a decent-to-good job in the Seattle game, and the team needs depth at the position he plays - why cut him? To make a point? Doesn't wash - if the kid can finally contribute I see that as a good thing. Gravy, as stated above. And I love gravy.

In case I failed to make myself clear, I did not bring up the money as an aspect that should factor into whether he stays on the roster or not. I brought it up purely to point out that he has been amply remunerated for his troubles. There is no reason to feel sorry for a man who has made so much money for so little production.

As I and others have pointed out several times already, it would actually cost more to cut Harrell than to keep him. But that is irrelevant to me. I don't want the most talented team. I want the most consistent team. The Patriots have rarely had the flashiest team in the NFL. They've won championships not through flash but through grinding it out game after game after game. Their roster is a revolving door of guys who perform workmanlike jobs for a couple of years and then are cut. It's quite rare that the Patriots bring back a player with a big contract.

I'm not clear what you mean here. Harrell has played 13 games in 3 seasons and there's genuine concern that he'll be paid a fat amount of money to sit on the bench this year as well.

AJ Hawk on the other hand has played every single game since '06. He has amasssed 401 total tackles in 4 seasons, 8.5 sacks, forced 2 fumbles, and picked off 5 passes.

If we're talking busts here, AJ Hawk would be an A-cup whereas Harrell would be double D's.
