Faulting the Packers for lack of free agent signing is like blaming a guy for coming back with an empty pale after he tried getting water from a dry well.

It's simple. You need to have players that fit your team, for a decent price even if you overpay a bit. How many of them have been out there? How have they performed with their new team?

I bust Ted's balls for not being more aggressive ... look though, what is there out there that we need for the price that it'll take?

That 1996 level of quality free agents was just not available in 2010.
No salary cap in one of the reasons.

Free agency was relatively new in 1996 but by now teams have learned to handle it better. There is also more money available for players as the cap has risen quite a bit in the years since.

Do teams really let gamechanging players out of the organization anymore. I guess we'll see with Peppers in Chicago.

I agree on this year's FA pool--I prefered signing our own guys (Collins, etc). However, I thought last year (and the year before) there were 1-2 guys who might have been worth pursuing earlier in FA.

If Wolf had the same approach as Ted, we'd never have gotten Reggie White--he would have been long gone to another team. And I don't think we'd have made the Superbowl without him and the other FAs he helped persuade come to GB.

That said, I am MUCH happier with Ted Thompson as GM rather than Sherman, who I thought was destroying our depth trading up in the draft all of the time (then doing silly things like trading up to draft a punter in the 3rd round who wasn't good enough to beat out the camp leg you brought n to give him some rest, then compounding the error by carrying two punters all year because you didn't want to cut your prized draftee).
