He's definitely looked better this year. Is it the offensive line or him not having injury issues? Don't know. It's good to see him busting free into the secondary again.

Now all that's missing are his 50+ runs and catching a basic screen pass.

Nice to see him actually making some nice cuts.

Grant has had a nice season. I have so many facepalm moments when people go after him. That is soooooooo 2008. Our line play has been worse this season (including in the run blocking) and he's had better production. If you can give him a crease he's a solid running back.

He's not Chris Johnson good. He'll never do the things AP does. I'm okay with that. I want a guy who wants to carry the load, and say what you will about Grant but he really is that guy. He wants to carry it as many times as possible, and as the statistics suggest he gets better and better with more carries as a game wears on.

We could use a good #2 back. I was hoping Green would fill that role for this year. We may actually see a lot more of Green as the year progresses.

I have a feeling that will change. TT's gonna hit on a stud running back before long. Also, an improved Oline will make our guys look better.

I understand Grant can run the ball like a "battering ram" but that seems to be all he knows how to do. He also can't catch a pass for his life. I like the guy but I don't think he's the future at RB. He's just a serviceable option.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

Yeah, that's the problem I have with him. He's a one-trick pony, and I personally prefer the 2000-2004 Ahman Green who caught lots of screens and drove Ds nuts.

I do think we should keep Grant, but note that we need a change of pace back for our #2. I was hoping Jackson would be it but it's looking like he's not. Green I don't see us having for more than this season.

I'd love to have someone like Sprowles who is elusive and annoying for opposing Ds or even a guy like Kevin Faulk who catches 50 passes a year and sometimes lines up as a WR.

So far this year, Green has only caught 3 balls but 2 of them went for first downs. Why not more screens to Green? Keep Grant fresh.

And one who loses his balance at every touch. I recall a LB just touching the side of his body and he spun around and fell over. Or a CB just touching his feet a little.

Now, of course, you fall down on some of these, but he appears to do it on every single play. That's one of the reasons why we're not breaking a big one. When the cornerbacks can take a 'battering ram' down that easily, maybe he's not that much of a battering ram at all. Just my opinion, of course (for NSD).

And the YPC might be a little skewed, when you run it so little against good teams, but so often against bad ones. Great stat padding, but he's not as good as his 4.2 YPC leads to believe.

And yes, a good O-line would help him. At least he'd start out after 2 yards instead of -2 yards.

"djcubez" wrote:

Yeah, Grant can't make that one extra guy miss. Or even the first guy.

i think the problem with him is his consistency...and most of all, many times he goes down on the first contact.

"beast" wrote:

That's been my problem with Grant. I have no problem saying he doesn't always have a hole to run though... but when the OL does make him a hole... even a big hole it's one on one and he rarely seems to be able to get past guy.... which he did an amazing job of in the second half of 2007.

Also in the second half of 2007 he would run though arm tackle and now any arm tackle even the horrible looking ones will take him down.

Again I'm not placing the sole blame of lack of a better running game on him... just saying when he does get the chances from his OL (which isn't that often but when he does) he doesn't seem to make the most of them.

I'm not sure how you can rightfully make this comment, nerdmann. If we had a "Madden" view (behind the line) of each run play you could say this, but we don't. I don't know how you can say Grant isn't seeing the crease when we as spectators can't really see the crease.

an improved Oline will make our guys look better.

Bump.

I was pretty critical of Grant last year and the beginning of this year. I'm actually happy with his stats right now after 11 games:

209 890 80.9 4.3 37 5

He's currently on pace for a 1294 yard season. Another thing we take for granted with Grant (no pun intended), he never fumbles. One fumble on 209 carries is impressive.
