Overall, I think some here are feeling very pessimistic and others less so - that's leading to some tensions
, I think.

Agreed.. I think the first ray of sunshine that we are starting to correct some of these running (oline fundamentals, lack of a consistent pass rush, playcalling to name a few) over the course of a game or two, things will start to brighten up.

Speaking personally, when watching some of the same fundamentals broken in 09 that were broke in 06,07 and 08.. it becomes hard to keep giving rope to this staff until they start climbing some.

That leads to one disappointed Packer fan that talks to much. ;)

Am I the only one here who has actually liked the playcalling the last few games? It's not like running game was going anywhere against Minnesota, and the playcalls in the passing game were very effective. We saw the screen game make a return, and half of Grant's yards came off of draw plays. In the game against St. Louis, the playcalling definitely worked in our favor -- McCarthy stayed with the run attempts and it helped open up play action and keep things balanced.

I understand that we haven't seen enough of the slants, but it isn't as though a few passing patterns are cure alls for our offense. I hope I don't stand alone in thinking the playcalling has been pretty good the last two games.

I'll need to see more of that before I give a ringing endorsement for McCarthy, but I at least like to see a little return of screen passes.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Sutton runs a 40 in 4.7.

And Wynn runs a 4.59. I know you were just throwing it out there, but its funny when players 40 times don't match their field speed.

If Jackson is still out that must have been one hell of a serious ankle injury! What is it, like week #8 now or so?

"LambeauEast" wrote:

From what I have heard is that that type of ankle sprain is as bad as a break if not worse because something to do with tendons. Not sure, but I heard it's not uncommon for that type of injury to be out this long, plus he had a setback as well.

Maybe they think that running the football will help with the bad oline play.(my opinion only)Part of the reason McCarthy has given up on the run is Jackson is never healthy and Wynn isn't a very good back. This must mean that Jackson isn't going to be ready to go anytime soon. Grant as pretty much under performned too.

And per usual GB had a pretty decent RB in training camp but Ted Thompson let him go and kept the lame ones.

Well he said in an interview it was a high ankle sprain so yeah they can get pretty bad. A severe one can sit a player (especially a RB) for most or all of the season.

IE.. Maybe Smith is where he should have been verse Martin sitting dead center on the Berrian TD.. bare minimum is maybe he saves a TD.. best case is he causes a pick. Most likely either a mid range gain or an incomplete.. we have no way of knowing how that changes a game. Or maybe he blows the coverage as well.. we will never know.

"pack93z" wrote:

The problem with thinking Smith may not have blown that coverage. Is that the one play people remember that even give the notion that he was that good, he did exactly the same thing. He played center field when he was suppose to cover the deep side.

The RB in question are not going to help the team either. Unless we end up with a return of 05 and needed to be 6 deep because of injury.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Smith had more than one play in the preseason.. but I agree, we don't know whether or not he would have been in position.. the only fact we know, Martin wasn't.

I know.. and I try.

Problem is, I had some of those basic fundamental driven into my noggin early in football camps.. I find it repulsive that "PROS" can't get them down or the coaches aren't reinforcing footwork, leverage, and body control... whatever the problem is, it is not acceptable at this level.. hell that isn't acceptable at frosh HS level.

Want positives, Barbre's first slide step in protection has improved from the opener through week 4, Clifton will return and handle his business at a much improved rate than with him out, Tauscher regardless of his rust will be ready to assist in the near future, placing Spitz at Center will return the meat to the center of this line.

McCarthy sounds like he is adjusting, albeit it late, at least on paper it sounds like progress... Grant, Jackson and Wynn got a little nudge this week, Jennings spoke out and will now go out and back those words up.. Finley finally showcased some of that preseason potential.. and finally.. on offense we might be getting tired of getting our asses handed to us.. I want fiery spirited play this week... time to get nasty on offense..

My question is where is Smith now and what is he doing for whoever he is playing for? If he's good enough for speculation that he could be doing better than what we have here he should be doing something for somebody.

I think we all know by now whatever happens in pre-season does not equate to the same when they play for real.
