Is Canty worth 7 million a year even if it is on a rental type deal of Haynesworth? 17.25 is the real number of some extent... unless he completely bombs and you negotiate a lower amount.

Porky.. we are three days into free agency, all is not lost. Yes we have missed out on a couple of players that would help, but the value was lost in teams overpaying that talent just to capture some headlines.

There are still good players available out there, maybe not as deep as Woodson and the April signing but 3 days and we are hitting the panic buttons.

We are talking about Chris Canty here.. not Reggie, Brett or a franchise type player.. it is Chris Canty. Haynesworth money was ridiculous as will Peppers deal when something breaks loose.

There hasn't been a single deal out there so far that you say, damn that was a good value. All is not doomed, players will come available that would and may end up helping the Packers win some games.

Now don't get me wrong, I think we need to add some talent and depth along the lines.. and will be disappointed if we don't ink a couple players that will do just that.

But after three days, I am not willing to get worked up over losing out on a nice player in Canty and losing a rotational guy in Cole, whom could never secure a starting role without injury..

I'm not saying all is loss, but I think Packers nation is split into two. You have the people who will look the other way know matter what Ted Thompson does and you have the people that want to burn him at the stake even if it means missing out on players where there isn't a place for such as Bart Scott.

Personally I'm sitting myself in the middle or attempting too.

I think Chris Canty was a good signing by the Giants. I think he's only going to get better. He would of been a first round pick if it wasn't for injuries and he was setback because of those injuries. Now that he's healthy he's starting to develop and I suspect he will play well for the Giants and would've for the Packers.

I think the Giants overpaid for him, but I think everyone is pretty much overpaid for in free agency. If Green Bay gets Igor they'll overpay for him. The problem with the Packers is whether or not they can learn to seal the deal. They haven't done it yet except for Ryan Pickett. Charles Woodson basically said he had no choice.

Like I said before in this thread that I think it's a good sign that at least the Packers are talking. That shows that they might be willing to go out and get a guy, but Canty was said to be the No. 1 DE on their list and they didn't get him. I get that you want the guy in for a visit, but if your GM isn't' on the phone with the agent setting parameters for a deal then why should the agent treat you seriously. To me that's a concern as you can offer a contract and make him come in and pass a physical before he signs it. If he doesn't pass then no deal.

I would say Olshansky is just as good as Canty, if not then pretty close. But again, they need to be aggressive with him. They can't dick around because he'll end up gone as well.

The part that bothers me is he is not bringing in anyone with 3-4 experience. I know people say AK will be a good olb but do we really know? How will hawk and barnett handle the ilb. Like i said we may think they will work but none of the guys have that experience and yes that scares me.

I can see our D being worse than it was last year.

Both Vonnie Holliday and Jason Taylor were released today. Bring them both in on two year contracts. Holliday can play DE opposite Cullen Jenkins and Taylor can play opposite Kampmann. Then Ted can go ape sh!t in the draft finding guys for the 34.

Is this ideal? No, it's stop gap, but they are both very serviceable players. We should take a shot while Woodson and Al can still play.

Taylor and Holliday have been cut? Why haven't I heard anyhting? I think Vonnie Holliday would be an excellent signing, would be a solid starter opposite of Jenkins until we can groom a new one.

Holliday and Taylor? Ancient and ancienter. That is not how you build a team.

I agree, but they are veterans who could help us make the transition to the 34. They aren't long term solutions, that's why I said 2 year contracts. How many times have we gone into the season praying a rookie or second year player can get it done? Hell, we are still doing that at safety.

I'm all for bringing back Holliday. I liked him when he was here. I remember him being a tad weak rushing the passer, but he had a strong base, held the edge very well, was good against the run, and did get occasional pressure. Sounds like a 3-4 DE's skillset. He's listed at 285, on the light side for a 3-4 DE, but I think he could pull it off.

So? It's not like our young guys are getting any younger, and even with the experience they gain--other than Nick Collins, Tramon Williams, and Greg Jennings, have you seen any increase in production? I sure haven't.

I wanna win, and I wanna win now. How long have we been "building" this team? With the 50 or so picks Thompson has made, this team has already been "built." It's time to improve it.

I agree that it's time to bring some veterans in here. You want to sign some younger guys like Canty or Olshansky that you can lock up for a while and build around. But when you have the solid build we have you can bring some veterans that you "know" what you are getting from to fill out the rest of your roster and use as backup or situational players.

Teams like the Titans are doing this consistently. I've never really known a GM could be "incapable" of getting deals done but I'm really starting to think that as good as Ted is at building through the draft ...he just can't seem to get deals done with FA's. And it's getting really, really annoying.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. If he wants a player right now he better either throw an offer at them or get them in for a meeting asap. Sitting in preliminary talks is NOT where we want to be at this point.

Some of you people crack me up, you are willing now to take some old players that really haven't done much lately but were against going after Ray Lewis and Brian Dawkins proven winners and players that will be here for a few more years.
