Is Canty worth 7 million a year even if it is on a rental type deal of Haynesworth? 17.25 is the real number of some extent... unless he completely bombs and you negotiate a lower amount.
Porky.. we are three days into free agency, all is not lost. Yes we have missed out on a couple of players that would help, but the value was lost in teams overpaying that talent just to capture some headlines.
There are still good players available out there, maybe not as deep as Woodson and the April signing but 3 days and we are hitting the panic buttons.
We are talking about Chris Canty here.. not Reggie, Brett or a franchise type player.. it is Chris Canty. Haynesworth money was ridiculous as will Peppers deal when something breaks loose.
There hasn't been a single deal out there so far that you say, damn that was a good value. All is not doomed, players will come available that would and may end up helping the Packers win some games.
Now don't get me wrong, I think we need to add some talent and depth along the lines.. and will be disappointed if we don't ink a couple players that will do just that.
But after three days, I am not willing to get worked up over losing out on a nice player in Canty and losing a rotational guy in Cole, whom could never secure a starting role without injury..

I'm not saying all is loss, but I think Packers nation is split into two. You have the people who will look the other way know matter what Ted Thompson does and you have the people that want to burn him at the stake even if it means missing out on players where there isn't a place for such as Bart Scott.
Personally I'm sitting myself in the middle or attempting too.
I think Chris Canty was a good signing by the Giants. I think he's only going to get better. He would of been a first round pick if it wasn't for injuries and he was setback because of those injuries. Now that he's healthy he's starting to develop and I suspect he will play well for the Giants and would've for the Packers.
I think the Giants overpaid for him, but I think everyone is pretty much overpaid for in free agency. If Green Bay gets Igor they'll overpay for him. The problem with the Packers is whether or not they can learn to seal the deal. They haven't done it yet except for Ryan Pickett. Charles Woodson basically said he had no choice.
Like I said before in this thread that I think it's a good sign that at least the Packers are talking. That shows that they might be willing to go out and get a guy, but Canty was said to be the No. 1 DE on their list and they didn't get him. I get that you want the guy in for a visit, but if your GM isn't' on the phone with the agent setting parameters for a deal then why should the agent treat you seriously. To me that's a concern as you can offer a contract and make him come in and pass a physical before he signs it. If he doesn't pass then no deal.
