Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur Explains Why The Offense Isn’t Implementing Their Game Plan

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur offered an explanation as to why his offense looks so out of sync this season. The Packers offense put up another stinker in a 24-10 Week 8 loss to the Minnesota Vikings Sunday.

The Packers offense looked great against the Chicago Bears in Week 1. But they’ve come down to earth since. The Packers have not scored 20 points since their Week 5 loss to the Detroit Lions. This is now the fourth game in seven tries the Packers have not scored 20 points this season.

The Packers had two chances to score touchdowns in the red zone against the Vikings in the fourth quarter. But they failed to convert, and it’s the reason the Packers are now 2-5 at the trade deadline.

LaFleur discussed the offensive challenges the Packers are dealing with in his press conference following Sunday’s loss. According to Zach Jacobson with Heavy, LaFleur said the Packers have been unable to use their game plan because they’ve been in bad situations on third down:

“You don’t even get into what you work on all week and what you plan for, you can’t even get into your normal rhythm,” he says…

“That’s what’s disappointing. You put all this time and effort into something, you come up with a plan and you don’t even give yourself a chance to execute it.”

The Packers need to get the run game going to create short distances on third down. The Packers averaged 4.3 yards per rush against the Vikings on Sunday. However, they weren’t consistently generating enough positive plays on the ground, and much of that was on the offensive line.

Penalties from their linemen killed the offense as well. The Packers were supposed to lean on their offensive line this season. Right now, they’re a significant reason why LaFleur isn’t getting into his game plan this season.

OL stinks so why not have shorter passing routes and rely on running game more? ..,

Because they are horrible at run blocking!!! they don’t stick to their blocks and they don’t move anybody off the ball or consistently create any holes.

That’s the point. If you can’t run the ball, you can’t set up play action, or any of the things the Packers offense is predicated upon.

They can utilize screens, quick passes, etc. There are options. Packers aren't the first team to have bad OL. They can change things. They can go with what the talent strengths are. Saying they stink is worthless. Figure it out. It's correctable. It's football, not rocket science. QB had time to throw. Routes are taking to long to develop. Read what I said. I'm not typing it again.

I am sure Beast will correct me here, but our offense, like SF, is based on a (wide) zone blocking scheme. Everything is set up off this scheme....play action, screens, and pass blocking.

You can't simply change schemes mid season, you need to get players who can effectively play within your system.

Clearly, we do not have the OLine that can excel or succeed in the system.

Moreover, we cannot pick up a 3rd & 1 or 4th and 1 to save our souls because we just don't have any road grader Olinemen.
