In the beginning, every rookie can't wait to find their place in the NFL. Once they accomplish that, it's on to earning that second contract. The Green Bay Packers found some good future franchise players in the 2020 Draft. One has already been extended. Five more will be gunning for that second contract in the [...]

Personally I hope JRJ gets his second contract. It will not be a bank breaking/salary cap busting one.
OTOH if someone other than Toms can step in and take the job away from him that would be a good thing from the Packers point of view. RJR has done enough that he will be able to land on another team so he isn't going to go hungry.

I hope he earns it this year.   He does not seem to make major mistakes ala Newman.

I don't think he was particularly good last year - underwhelming on many running plays (unlike his dad who was a road grader).  I thought he took a slight step back from the previous year.

Having said that, hope springs eternal and I hope he has a nice year, is resigned, and plays 7 more years at the position.

I think Runyan is a great backup whom can start if needed, and the Packers have certainly needed it.

It seems like he focuses in pass blocking and gets good grades there, but struggles in run blocking as he might not be talented enough to focus and be good at both.

Still a good player to have around as you can count on him, though in a limited role, but an absolutely amazing value for a 6th round pick.

Absolutely worth a 2nd contract, though not worth breaking the bank for. The market will most likely set his value unless he wants to just take the best offer the Packers give. I think a lot will depend on what his agent thinks his market will be l, and how realistic that is and how much quality depth do the Packers think they already have.

With the Packers not taking a single OL this year in the draft, I'm concerned their evaluation of the quality of depth might be overly inflated. Of course, the Packers did have a lot of developmental bodies already, so maybe a late rounder didn't make sense, but I feel like they could of improved the top end quality.

Let's say JRJ is an average RG. Going by PFF, he's graded out similarly to guys getting paid in the 13-18th place the last few years. That would put him at $3.5-4.5m a year for a new contract, probably closer to the higher end because guys signing new contracts tend to get paid more.

I would say if he has a good year he's easily worth that, but if he struggles and looks like a guy who has hit his ceiling then maybe they pass on the second contract. He's still young though and looked pretty good in 2021. If the offensive line stays healthy for most of the season and works as a unit, I think JRJ could look a lot better in 2023 than he did in 2022.

If he plays really well in 2023 and looks like a top 10 or better RG, then it probably looks more like $7.5-8.5m a year. Is he worth that? I don't think that he's shown that he is to this point.
