I just heard on the radio that Wisconsin head football coach Gary Anderson has left the Badgers to take over at Oregon State.
That's too bad. He seemed like an excellent coach and all around good guy.
Wisconsin hasn't had much luck retaining a coach since Alvarez stepped down.

Youl'd leave, too...if you were ordered to lay down in the Big 10 championship for money.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

Would have liked to see if he would have been able to add a passing game to the traditional run game. Would be nice if Bevell would give up OC duties to become a college HC.

The behind the scenes political games in Madison are being flushed out.. from staff pay, to a wide breadth of athlete programs to fund, to admission standards vs athlete academic standings are in play. Not to mention probably some conflict in between Barry Alvarez and any coach that resides there. BA casts a big shadow over the standing coach, some even speculating that he meddles some.

I think in the end, it came down to not being able to get recruits into UW and assistant coaching pay... with growing expectations to take the next step.

My opinion.. Andersen became frustrated in not being able to get marginal (but NCAA qualifying) kids into the program... and took an easy road. One that was closer to where he is comfortable.. out west.

I was stunned when I read about it last night. I didn't see that coming at all and instantly thought about Bill Parcels and Patriots during Super Bowl XXXI and then also Mike Holmgren's final year with Packers.

Bring in Jim Harbaugh!!

I have heard rumors flying about here in The Buckeye State Jim Tressel is ready to get back into Coaching College ball, wouldn't that make an interesting trio of coaches in The Big 10.

Tressel at Wisconsin
Harbaugh at Michigan
Meyer at Ohio State

Throw in Dantonio at Michigan State,

Things could get real interesting again!!!

Academics is a tough issue. Does UW really want to lower its standards for a better football team?

I think a big part might have been Barry not wanting the Oline and Running game history to be screwed up. I think he wants to improve the QB and receiving aspect of the Badgers without changing what he put in place that makes the Badgers a competitive team.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the QB from Utah that commited to UW.

I don't think Wisconsin is subpar in paying.. but they are 40th overall in total staff pay.. Oregon State.. 41st. Similar. And I would argue that Wisconsin has a better program, higher sought after coordinators and that we are lagging behind the demand curve in terms of being competitive with the competition that it wants to be considered in. If the supply is short, the contracts are basically meaningless, a coaches word even less, you better stay competitive in terms of salary and compensation if you want to retain those performing. Aranda and the defense for the bulk of the season did just that.

My opinion.. there is a direct conflict between the athletic department vs board of regents/ admissions. If speculation is true that the requirements for athletes have increased at UW over the past several year and exceptions are higher for the program.. the guys stuck in the middle coaching the program feel that pressure. Why deal with that when you can get similar money at a school with less expectations and a power 5 conference yet?

Oh and do all that with a 8th place recruiting budget in the big ten.

When I read that Anderson left, I was EXTREMELY happy. The guy impressed me as an all out idiot when it came to game day coaching and offense in general. I really don't give a damn why he left, I'm just glad he did. My theory, though, is that Barry Alvarez either told him in no uncertain terms to forget his pet form of idiocy - the read option crap, OR Barry just kinda told him he better take the first job that came along because he was no longer welcome in Madison. I was looking at the prospect of at least several years of decline into mediocrity before Anderson finally got fired, but HALLELUJAH, now he's actually GONE. The only regret I have about Anderson leaving is that Aranda will probably be going also - and he was a decent D Coordinator.

I'd be well satisfied with either Paul Chryst or Matt Canada as a successor, or maybe Bevell, as was mentioned. Harbaugh or Tressel? Not so much.
