Every year it seems like the Packers are so close to getting a good player here via trade or even in the draft. Almost had Marshawn Lynch in the draft. Almost had Randy Moss. Almost had Tony G. Makes me sick.

That very well might have been the largest win in obtaining Tony... fans are getting tired of almost.

I don't hope we go hog wild in spending in the free agent market.. but building a little excitement here or there with a "name" add would break some of the "cheap" or conservative talk within the Packer fan base.

I agree.. it would be nice to get over the "almost" hump..

I dont think the cheap label would be so easy to stick if we weren't consistently well under the salary cap. You don't get to roll that money over to the next year. You spend it or lose it. When a team appears close where one or two players might put them over the top, but they don't acquire them and have a large sum under the cap to be spent that criticism is going to be made whether it's fair or not. We heard the same thing from Eagles fans during their run when they always came up a little short in the playoffsbut hadn't spent right up to the cap.

I understood the cap deal this year basically two fundamental reasons.

1) Uncapped year and unlimited spending on the horizon.

2) We have several players that need to be re-upped this year.. rolling a good chunk of the bonus and salary into this year..

That is smart business. however it does open the door for people to complain about lack of "splashes".. or addressing areas of immediate need.. say offensive guards.

I know we've got in-house people that need to be re-upped, but I still think there's enough money to make a couple of those "splashes" that I think we'd all like to see. I'm all for smart business, but another aspect of smart business is doing well on the PR angle -- if Ted's smart he'll consider that in his planning. Fair or not, he's on the bubble after all that went on this offseason and a .500 record so far. It wouldn't be a good idea to give us all the "just get on board or shut up" message this year.

And moreover, since he did try to get TG, I think he knows this.

I'm hoping we never see the uncapped year. If we lose the cap, you can kiss winning in Green Bay goodbye. Teams like Dallas and the New Yorks would dwarf the GB's and KC's just on television rights alone.

Add to it a questionable economy, lack of a deep pockets owner.. the Packers I think are playing it very tight with the cash.

Add a postponed renovation to the field as further proof.

It would be hard pressed to come to the community is hard times and ask for more revenue.. honestly I think this aspect of the team right now is being over looked.

I truly believe that is part of the reason we were not very active in the free agency market.. cash reserves.

Oct 16 Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports the Green Bay Packers thought they were close to acquiring Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez before the NFL's trade deadline. The Packers offered the Chiefs a third-round draft choice for Gonzalez and had the trade paperwork for the Chiefs to finalize the deal, but 10 minutes before the deadline, the Chiefs said the Packers would need to offer a second-round draft choice to get the deal done, according to league sources.
