I also hate the Safe plays were calling and i agree that i want to see some aggressive calls but my guess is the reason we havent seen those aggressive plays is because of the impact mistakes will take due to #4 leaving. Remember Rodgers is going to compared to Favre and my guess is Mike McCarthy knows and is trying to call things safe for a while to let people forget about favre. I believe in Rodgers but there are A LOT of people who when Rodgers has a bad day are going to flip out and i think that is why Mike McCarthy is going to call some plays safe that he wouldnt have last year. IDK it makes sense in my head.

What in your experience leads you to believe that Mike McCarthy or any other coach gives a damn about what fans think? What makes you think that he would change his play calling so that you'll feel just a little bit warmer at night when you go to bed and ponder the relative merits of the Favre situation? That's a pretty naive and self-important point of view.

I have no problem with speculating on the team or reasons why Coach does certain things, but let's try to keep those wild speculations football related at the very least.

So what sounds more plausible? Your theory or that maybe Coach is playing it conservative because that's what the play of the offensive line has dictated? Deep routes take time to develop. Hence, if the line can't give the QB time, deep routes aren't really an option are they?

I'm also not ruling out that there has been zero significant difference in the play calling from last year to this year. Obviously we can't know without the data, but it's possible selective memory is playing a large part in a perceived difference in the play calling. If anyone can pull up data on pass attempts over 15 yards or so this year compared to last year, I think it would be interesting to take a look.

Who knows what Mike McCarthy is like behind closed doors?
He might be chewing them a new butt hole. (I kind of hope he is!)
These guys have looked dead on the field. No one is getting fired up, yelling at guys to get it together. Sometimes THAT is what you need. Someone thats tired of half-assed play, and wants to WIN.

You've never heard of a head coach trying to protect the "psyche" of a young QB in the NFL?

I guess you haven't been watching the NFL for too long. Maybe you're playing too much Madden.

What do you think is going on in Tennessee right now?

When in Rome, right? Honestly, any one of us internet assholes w/ half an ounce of football knowledge can spew out a theory, but the odds of us being right are ridiculously low. Then again, that's how the game is played, so I'll chuck in my own half-baked thoughts.

I think the issues on offense are three-fold, maybe 3.5:

1. OL - injuries and inconsistent play. Obviously, the issues on the interior have been re-hashed here constantly -- but how about the holding calls and whiffs from Tausch and Cliffy? Anyone see that coming? I didn't. Rodgers has been running for his life more times than not, and the holes for the backs aren't there as much as they should be. It all starts on the line, and always has.

2. Speaking of the RBs, Grant needs to get himself right, and I mean pronto. He's not running like he did last year, and a lost fumble per game is totally unacceptable. BJ's just plain looked better than he has to this point. Not good, especially since we just paid Grant like he's an elite back -- he's looked like anything but, to this point.

3. Receivers -- first, two of them have been hurt, and one could argue that they're the two receivers with whom Rodgers has had the best chemistry. Additionally, it's damn hard to run our 4 and 5 receiver sets (which really were our bread and butter last year, and served to set up a lot of the offense) when we've only got three receivers. As for the tight ends, well, they've been kept back in an effort to give Rodgers some time, since the O-line's been doing its best seive impression so far. So who's out there to catch balls?

So that's what I think has been wrong -- here's what I think needs to be done in an effort to fix things:

1. OL -- If I were McCarthy, I'd make it damn crystal clear that jobs are on the line, here. They man up and they protect, or they'll be on the bench, simple as that. "But wait! If we bench them, aren't we giving up on the season?" Do you really think there's a season to give up on if those fools don't start doing their jobs? Really? Nope -- from Colledge to Cliffy, get your shit straight, or you won't be playing.

2. RBs -- Ryan Grant, your message is the same as above, to the OL. You play better or you don't play. Jackson can play, and once he's healthy so can Lumpy. I don't care if we just handed him the equivalent of the GNP, if he's going to miss holes and put the ball on the ground, he's no help at all.

3. Receivers -- this one's tougher, because it's an injury issue more than anything. It's on McCarthy to gameplan around this until JJ and Ruvel get right, somehow -- I would hope he's able to do this, and I do think he can, assuming the other phases of the offense get fixed, or at least better.

So that's my uninformed opinion, as pertains to the offense. For the record, I think it's all do-able, and I'm still optimistic it'll happen. I'm always interested to hear other opinions, so rip it to shreds.

Oh -- forgot number 3.5. Aaron -- he's in a tough spot, what with the issues I've laid out above, but that's no excuse. It's the NFL, and he's being paid plenty well to do his job. With the exception of the Bucs game, he's done very well, IMO, but that Bucs game didn't look good. I don't like that he lost his poise, and I expect him to shake it off and get back to playing smart, efficient football. Every QB has a bad game, and I'm going to give him the same benefit of the doubt I gave his predecessor, until such time as he proves he doesn't deserve it. So far I've seen 3 games played well and one bad game -- I'd like to see another well-played game this Sunday against the Falcons.

Good post, ILikeThePackers39. You summed it up very well. You are right about Tauscher and Clifton. I think they have been below par all season, and hardly anybody seems to be noticing it.

ILikeThePackers39 - Excellent post.

OL - Completely agreed. If Aaron Rodgers doesn't get 3 seconds, someone gets benched. That needs to be Mike McCarthy 's message. They are professionals. They have jobs to do. If they fail at their jobs, they should be punished accordingly.

Ryan Grant - Mike McCarthy needs to send a msg. Brandon Jackson has been looking better in '08. He needs to start. He should be starting next week. Maybe that would get through Grant's head that NOTHING in this league is given to you. You have to earn it.

WR - Driver and Jennings, our primary WRs, are both healthy. It's not a legit excuse. How many teams in the NFL would kill to have Driver and Jennings as their #1 and #2 WRs? The problem isn't injuries in WR, it's time Aaron Rodgers has to throw, and the fault goes back to the OL. Aaron Rodgers isn't going to hit Driver and Jennings as much if he's running for his life.

Definitely agree that it isn't an excuse. McCarthy needs to scheme around the injuries, because you're right -- we've got 2 very good and healthy wideouts, and Jordy hasn't looked all that bad. My inclusion of the WR injuries was more a speculative attempt at understanding why we've been so vanilla on offense. Still, it's Coach's job to adjust to the injuries, and thus far he hasn't been able to do so. I'll agree that the OL is culpable -- as you said, Aaron can't throw downfield if he doesn't have the protection to allow those wideouts to get downfield.

So I guess a fair bit of what I'm seeing as issues ends up in McC's lap, really -- he's got to put the fear of God into the OL and Grant (or, as you suggest, put Grant's butt on the bench for a game and let him see where his sub-par effort leads -- I don't have a problem with that, personally), and he's got to scheme for the personnel he has to work with, no doubt.

I think he can do it.
