I also hate the Safe plays were calling and i agree that i want to see some aggressive calls but my guess is the reason we havent seen those aggressive plays is because of the impact mistakes will take due to #4 leaving. Remember Rodgers is going to compared to Favre and my guess is Mike McCarthy knows and is trying to call things safe for a while to let people forget about favre. I believe in Rodgers but there are A LOT of people who when Rodgers has a bad day are going to flip out and i think that is why Mike McCarthy is going to call some plays safe that he wouldnt have last year. IDK it makes sense in my head.

If that makes sense in your head, you might want to consider seeing a psychiatrist. I'm not just trying to hate here, but these are the types of opinions that make reading message boards, by and large, pretty useless.

What in your experience leads you to believe that Mike McCarthy or any other coach gives a damn about what fans think? What makes you think that he would change his play calling so that you'll feel just a little bit warmer at night when you go to bed and ponder the relative merits of the Favre situation? That's a pretty naive and self-important point of view.

I have no problem with speculating on the team or reasons why Coach does certain things, but let's try to keep those wild speculations football related at the very least.

So what sounds more plausible? Your theory or that maybe Coach is playing it conservative because that's what the play of the offensive line has dictated? Deep routes take time to develop. Hence, if the line can't give the QB time, deep routes aren't really an option are they?

I'm also not ruling out that there has been zero significant difference in the play calling from last year to this year. Obviously we can't know without the data, but it's possible selective memory is playing a large part in a perceived difference in the play calling. If anyone can pull up data on pass attempts over 15 yards or so this year compared to last year, I think it would be interesting to take a look.

HAHA obviously you didn't actually read my post, i was pretty clear that I don't like the play calls and there needs to more aggressive play calls... its NFL not a kiddy league. But having a first year starter and telling a HOF QB we dont want him is a risky move in itself. The O-Line not doing their part is a huuuge part of it, i def agree with that. I dont think Mike McCarthy or any NFL coach cares what fans think...?

LONG PASSES THIS YEAR
Aaron Rodgers 12 over 20 yards AND 5 over 40 yards

LAST YEAR

BF and Aaron Rodgers 51 over 20 and 17 over 40 ( have to use both of them, as Aaron Rodgers did have passes in the Dallas game )

Not sure about attempts, but I think we can say it would be about the same as the completions are about the same

Thanks Longtime. One stat I'd like to see though is percentage of runs on 1st down in '08 compared to percentage of runs on 1st down in '07.

I don't know last years numbers but it looks to me like we have passed it 47 times and have run the ball 31 on first down. Certainly last year it seemed Favre threw it on first down a lot. When I went through this I was amazed at how many first down penalties we have accrued thus far. Not surprisingly most of those drives did not go well for us. It takes the run all but out of a first down option when your 1st and 15 or 20 and give the defense a distinct advantage.

We haven't exactly been stellar on first down. I saw way to many incompletions and one or two yard runs when I looked at it. That's when we weren't getting penalties.

We need first down production to improve. I would say 70% of the time we are faced with 2nd and 8 or more. Can't win ballgames that way. I did not feel good even after Woodson gave us the lead Sunday. Tampa was getting five to six yards on first down runs. You cannot get an offense off the field if you don't get them in third and long. The frustrating thing is it looked like we made contact near the line but their RB's wouldn't go down until they had at least five yards. Our guys wouldn't quite be in position squared up with leverage to deliver a blow and grabbed on sometimes slipping out.

Better than allowing wide gaping holes but still not quite where we need to be.

Other stats of note that may tell a tale.

Against Detroit for example, we rushed the ball on first down 11 times that resulted in a gain of 3 yards or less. Now we had a few other successful first down runs mind you but that's eleven times we were in 2nd and 7 or worse.
On the otherhand in the second game Arod threw incomplete on first down 9 times. That's nine times we were in 2nd and 10.

In addition to all of this Arod has been sacked on first down FOUR times. I don't remember our OL ever letting anyone close to Favre on first down unless we were losing by 10 in the fourth quarter.

Lastly, we have been penalized on first down eight times. That's eight drives that were essentially thrown away before they started. Twice a game for four games and that's too much. You cannot just give away two drives a game.

It looks to me like we are averaging about 15 times a game where we end up 2nd and 7 or worse when you consider the no gain runs, incompletions, penalties, and sacks.

Our offense will only get more consistant when we start doing better than that.

I would feel a little better if I would once see Mike McCarthy come unglued on this team, or should I say specific portions of this team that repeatedly make the same mental errors.

I talking about dropping the hammer on the oline play, arm tackles, bad angles, poor containment, missed blocking reads, drops and a general lack of fire.

We came out in the Cowboy game with fire.. and it disappears quickly.. we looked sharp in the opening drives yesterday and this evaporated in the humidity of Tampa.. someone needs to provide a kick in the ass on this team.. Mike McCarthy that be your call.

"pack93z" wrote:

You mentioned arm tackles. I'm so tired of watching a game and seeing players throw their bodies at the offensive player and not wrapping him up instead. It's sad, but this team really needs to run through some High School football drills. Last year they were so good at wrapping up and then gang tackling, but this year it seems like guys like Barnett are always looking for the big hit or whatever. It's just ridiculous.

I think offensive line play might need a new face. I think Josh Sitton might be inserted as stater sooner rather than later. Maybe that'll improve it a bit. I really don't know.

I've been wanting to get Sitton back in there and Colledge on the bench. Of course, I wanted Wells back even more than Sitton, and with Wells in the lineup on Sunday the O-line was worse than ever. But maybe he needed a game to get in the swing of things, and I'm not sure how much of the poor O-line play was his fault anyway. And I never will know, because I'm not going to watch this game a second time, as I usually do. I'm not that much of a masochist.
