I'd prefer to keep Wells. He's a good C. We went into 2011 one OL short already.

I'd give him a 3 year $20M contract - take it or leave it. That's a 31 year old body that has been giving up 30 lbs a play for the last 6 years. It'll break down sooner than later.

You don't deviate from the plan. Frankly, I think Wells is the best center in the NFC, but you can't give out bad contracts. The Packers have to pay Greg Jennings, who is in the final year of his deal, Clay Matthews, Jermichael Finley, and B.J. Raji. They're all younger and arguably more valuable than Wells. It's looking more likely that Wells won't be back, so the Packers may go all in and pursue Peter Konz in the draft.

Let's not forget that a draft pick used to replace Wells is a draft pick that could have been used elsewhere. Our D was #19, and it was only #19 because we created a lot of takeaways because we couldn't tackle worth a damn. If it weren't for the takeaways, our D would have been probably mid-20s or worse.

This thread, some folks put Wells at top 5, some said he's over-rated. I don't think anyone thinks Wells is a bad player. I'd rather sign him and keep the draft pick.

Konz is on the level of Maurkice Pouncey. I think jumping ahead of Cincinnati would be an ideal scenario. It'd cost an extra pick, maybe one next year, but it's worth it if you think Konz is as valuable as Pouncey. I think he is. Frankly, he's better than Mike Pouncey, who went in the top 20 last year.

There's a drop off in the rest of the class. Michael Brewster is overrated. I'm sure most pro scouts know this. He was highly touted recruit and played at Ohio State. That's why there's some hype there. The internet still has some catching up. I do like Ben Jones, though. He'd be a nice second round addition, but again, I don't think he lasts very long in the second round. Having four or five interior lineman with potential first round grades makes this a great class at first glimpse, but after the dust settles, it's not deep after those four or five. You start to get into your potential T.J. Langs of the world.

Not resigning him leaves us unable to draft one of our other significant needs. This sucks.

Player preference, salary cap management, etc. all come into the equation, which obviously isn't a surprise to anyone. I'm sure Ted Thompson would like him back. It's just not as simple as resigning him and bringing him back. Hopefully something can be worked out. Wells just seems a little butt-hurt.
