Analysis: Green Bay Packers rookie T Derek Sherrod looks too green to be a starter

The Packers came into camp excited about first-round draft pick Derek Sherrod possibly starting this year, but after watching their preseason opener Saturday night at Cleveland, I’m not so sure they should be, not as a starter right away.

Sherrod is a natural left tackle playing left guard, and he has a lot of work to do to be a starter in the NFL. I don’t think he finishes well. He sometimes stays on blocks for a little bit, but he doesn’t block until the whistle. He has the ability to get out to linebackers in the run game, and he has the size and reach and body type to do it, but he just didn’t finish blocks against the Browns. He also needs to play with lower pad level and use his hands better, be under control with his hands.

Even in pass blocking he didn’t finish and allowed some pressure. This is the easiest thing for him to correct right now, finish his blocks. They’ll go to the tape and tell him, ‘You can block longer than you have been.’ That part I think will be OK.

With the lockout and being a rookie I would be surprised to see Sherrod play, especially early, unless pushed into action. But I think he is getting valuable reps and that will payoff in the future. I believe Lang is the guy at guard, he is healed this year and should be much better. Playing Sherrod at guard pushes Lang and, as mentioned, gets Sherrod reps. I think MM is looking at the big picture here. Next year Sherrod should make a big jump with the experience from this year, off season conditioning, and OTAs. At least that is my hope.

It helps to remember what happened with Bulaga last year. He was drafted even higher than Sherrod and was given a chance to compete for a starting job in training camp, but he lost out. When he was pushed into the starting lineup around week five due to injury, he was kind of shaky, but he improved steadily and was very good by the end of the season and throughout the playoffs. So like most others, I won't be worried about him if Lang beats him out.

Forcing rookies to start day one is asking for trouble.. having them earn the playing time when ready is a recipe for success.

There is no issue if Sherrod starts in observation mode.. actually more than likely beneficial to all parties involved.

I think the Packers are testing the boundaries of both Lang and Sherrod to see what they have and more importantly what they don't... and then the staff will adjust accordingly for the season and the roster counts.

Having both be able to move to the edge or the inside would allow the Packers to carry a minimum of players on the line.. allowing for more flexibility in other areas of the team.

If we can win a championship with the roller coaster play of a Colledge.. we will be fine with two talented young men like Lang and Sherrod.. I really think the Packers are concerned with losing depth in a Spitz type.. and are seeing what they have.

I'm not too worried as I was under the impression that Sherrod was drafted for 2012 and beyond, not for 2011 anyways. (And yes, Ted will draft another OL in the 1st or 2nd round in 2012).
