Having just looked at the picks behind Sherrod, he wasn't too bad! Outside of a couple QB's, the 2nd round appears to have been empty of impact talent. Lots of no names. I didn't look to see if all of them are still active, but not a lot of recognized names.

So yes, Ted Thompson could have made a better pick. But it would have been a reach.

We all have our own definitions of things, but he's a bust in my opinion. Ultimately, all that matters is the product that marches out on the field each week, and Sherrod offered very little to that product. All the excuses in the world don't change that, and certainly doesn't win games for the Packers.

You can predict the future to a degree. The sun continues to rise, so you can expect it to rise tomorrow. This team never shows up early in the season, never shows up for a full 60, shits itself regularly and plays down to the competition.

But in drafting a player, you take his past history into account. If Ted was trying to get a deal on a player who fell in the draft because of his injury history, it would be different. That's what he did with Justin Harrell. But with these other guys, Sherrod and Franklin, the whole bunch of guys from Nick Collins to Terrence Murphy to Jmike Finley, those were not forseeable.

So with Harrell and Starks, you could make the case that those were bad picks. If you want to say all these picks were "wasted," I guess you can say that if you want. Like you say, people define words in their own way. For me, wasting a pick is pissing it away by not even trying. Ted doesn't do that.

I define the success of draft picks or free agents on how much they help the team. Sherrod didn't really help the Packers at all. There's no way picks like that can be considered a success in any way, imo.

Nerd is making it sound like we are bashing Ted for picking him and him being a bust and we aren't. They are two separate things. The pick, which for the most part was a good pick, and the results of the pick, which sucked.

And who knows he could catch on with another team and become all pro down the road.

I just checked this thread out because I was wondering what could still be said about Sherrod being cut after four pages of posts. The whole injury/bust/success situation could be summed up by saying win some/lose some. It doesn't necessarily boil down to being a good or bad talent evaluator. There's a LOT of luck involved.

I will say this about Ted: He hit it extremely big with Aaron Rodgers, and THAT is the primary reason the Packers were/are/will be for another 5-10 years at least near the top. Other than that colossal success, Ted has been middle of the road or slightly less at building a team - which is why I often say, HE IS A DECENT GM BUT HE JUST HASN'T MAXIMIZED THINGS.
