I think guys that do a lot of spearing or cheap shotting with their helmets usually end up with self inflicted neck problems they get to deal with for the rest of their lives, so it kind of takes care of itself. A prime example of this is John Lynch. He gets to go down as a hard hitting safety, but he really was Tony Dungy's cheap shot artist.

If they want to do the punitive actions with fines - do it by game checks not some random monetary amount. $50K is fly shit to some of these clowns, and they probably have owners that pick up the tab under the table anyway.

Remember those weird straps he put on his helmet to keep his head from moving when he would put his helmet down?

If a RB puts his head down and plunges into the line, they won't fine him. That's far worse than DBs hitting guys. It's not the DB's fault if the QB is leading his WRs into hits.
Now the blatant hits to the head of Arodge, that's another story. Went repeatedly uncalled for two years. Finally Arodge is getting some respect. Wasn't it Briggs who went after Arodge's head in the playoffs this year? That's cheap.

In both cases it is the defender's responsibility to avoid the danger, and that's exactly what they do. Also, it would be a nightmare for officials to have to constantly make those judgment calls on ball carriers.

I can't think of any major injuries that have been caused by ball carriers' helmets. Unexpected hits are the most dangerous ones, and it is almost impossible for a ball carrier to put a surprise hit on a defender, considering that the defenders are all trying to catch the ball carrier and tackle him.

I'm not trying to discredit Roy Williams here, but if he said he should be fined for the hit, then he'll be considered soft and a target.

With regards to the rules I don't like the inconsistency with which they're enforced and how strict they are. If it was glancing, incidental contact I don't think it should even be a foul yet last year we saw defenders be fined for contact as innocent as brushing the top of Brett Favre's helmet with his fingertips. Whereas, Rodgers, among others, has taken intentional or at the very least extremely sloppy head shots without drawing a flag.

There's a million ways he could get out of saying what he did without looking soft as you put it.

As much as I have always loved football and always will, I have come to realize that rugby is much more of a true team sport than American football. There is no room for prima donnas on a rugby team; the flow of the game is just not conducive to such behavior. It's not as flashy and glitzy as American football, and for that reason it will probably never arouse in me the same kind of passion as American football, but I love the game because it is the quintessential blue collar, workmanlike sport.

And anyone who says rugby is not a real man's sport has never felt what it's like to be in the middle of a scrum or on the bottom of a maul. I can barely walk for a couple days after a game -- it's awesome!

And to nonstop, who do you know that doesn't think rugby is a real man's sport? That's insane.
