Also at times when the team is emotional down. Drivers makes a great play to spark the offense to get moving. Jones has made some great catches as well but I don't remember one sparking up the team, but I remember a couple chances when he could of and dropped the pass...

Jones might be better long term numbers wise but Driver might be better emotionally for the team.

I thought about this for a long time. I am torn because of my adoration for Driver. But I didn't see that from him this year, because he wasn't really needed for that. Jennings became the man and made the plays that sparked the team.

I think he added spark in the 49ers game when it was close and in both in season Bears game (it was weaker spark in the Bears games but he did seem to keep drives alive at times)

But yeah I know what you mean it was a lot less than other years... but in his defense it was his worst year since 2001... and he did have an injury. Though the first 6 games (before his injury) he was on pace for of 74.6 catch and 818.6 yard season... which is pretty good.

He was again injured in the Super Bowl.. but the 3 playoff games before that he averaged 4 catches and 47 yards per game which to a 16 game season would of been... 64 catches for 752 yards.... again still a good averages when healthy.

So I think when healthy Driver might be able to still compete with Jones who averaged 2.75 catches per game and 36 yards in the 4 post season games which would equal 44 catches and 576 yard season.

Jones clearly surpassed Driver this year.

The numbers I posted above made it less clear to me about Jones passing Driver... Driver had his worse season sine 2001 and had injuries... yet Jones was only able to put up 141 more yards than Driver and Driver caught more passes... and Driver has more catches and yards in the post season... though Jones might of had more if he didn't drop a couple of key passes.... but he did so they didn't get factor in because he didn't make the play.

Let's calm down and look at the deal the Packers and Donald Driver signed last year in the uncapped year.

1) Donald got most of his remaining money in 2010.

2) The contract reduced his future salaries so there is not so much incentive to cut Donald Driver.

Donald Driver is not expensive.

We don't know if there will be a salary cap but if there is it will be larger.
Donald's contract is good for him and the Packers.

Why cut him?

Actually those are pretty lousy numbers for a starting WR on a pass-oriented team with a QB as good as Rodgers. Driver mostly just caught short passes all year. He still made some very good plays and at least one great one (the TD against the Niners), but those moments were few and far between compared to previous years.

I think Driver could bounce back and put up some good numbers again, but it's more likely that he will lose more and more playing time to Nelson and Cobb and have another statistically unimpressive season, then maybe retire. He should still be an important part of the team this year, but more as a role player and team leader than the highly productive player he used to be.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy believes that Donald Driver "has got plenty left in his tank."
Driver saved his roster spot with a productive postseason after a thoroughly unimpressive regular season. The 36-year-old slot receiver is due $5 million in 2011 salary and bonuses, and the Packers apparently plan to pay it. Feb 28, 11:01 PM

8/5/2010: Signed a three-year, $17.208 million contract. The deal included initial roster bonuses of $5 million and $1 million. Another $1.8 million is available through performance-based incentives. 2011: $4.1 million (+ $700,000 roster bonus + $200,000 workout bonus), 2012: $2.6 million (+ $2.2 million roster bonus + $200,000 workout bonus), 2013: Free Agent

This is how Ted & Mike think. However, Driver is still probably much better than the guy that Brett Swain is better than. He was better than Brett Swain last year for sure.

I am all for keeping Donald Driver. Driver is still a great player for the Packers and can easily play the 3rd and 4th receiver role. Everyone wants Jones back...interesting to see since everyone was calling for his head when he dropped so many critical passes. Do you have faith that it will change next season? I don't. I also don't want to pay a guy who drops critical passes, starter money.

Driver is reliable. He is up there in age, but he does something most receivers are scared to do, take the shitty routes. The best part about it is he makes something out of the routes unlike your typical receiver that would
a) drop the ball.
b) catch the ball, get hit and fumble it.
c). catch the ball and instantly fall.
Also, Driver is a GREAT run blocking receiver...another rare instance for the wide receiver position. There is too much that he brings to the team on the field to even think about cutting him loose. The off-field stuff just adds onto it all.

The guy has consistently been a good receiver for the Packers for years and he has one bad season (due to injuries) and he gets sent to the dog house. I have more faith in Driver coming back with a full healthy season than I do James Jones coming back and catching the football.

You heard it here first. Driver is a thousand yard receiver this year and wins comeback player of the year.

(which will make him the Packers' third 1000-yard receiver in 2011, by the way).
