Stats aren't everything, apparently you don't know that. They don't show the threat that Finley is to the opposing team, they don't show the mismatches that he creates....

It seems as though you are trying to say tha Finley isnt a good TE because he hasn't put up great #'s.

So that's what you got out of it? Huh.

That's not what I wrote, what I meant, or what I think, but I guess you are free to think that, if that's the best conclusion you can come to after reading what I wrote. I think most people might be able to get a little more out of it than me being a big meanie who thinks Finley isn't a good TE and thinks stats are everything. :salute:

I don't think I could name anybody who has been called, by anyone, the best in the NFL at any position having accomplished as little as Finley has so far. His potential is undeniable, but he just hasn't done much yet.

I said "one of the best," not "the best."

If he would have done that for a full season, then I'd say pay the man. He hasn't done that yet. Even if he had, he wouldn't have been the BEST TE in the NFL in 2009, production-wise. He would have been a top 5 TE, at least counting only receiving, which is Finley's strong suit as a TE.

Yes, a top 5 TE would be "one of the best," and therefore should be paid a lot of money.

I think this will all get sorted out once the 2011 season is in the books, anyway.

I never blamed you for calling Finely the best in the league. Lots of people have called him that, including Aaron Rodgers. I think it's premature. It usually takes much, much more than what he has done to be considered the best in the league. Wouldn't you agree? Name anyone who has been called the best in the NFL with so little actual production. Please. I can't think of anyone.

As far as top 5, that would have been IF his hot streak of the last 7 games of 2009 had lasted all season. Unfortunately, we haven't seen that out of him yet. He is capable of it, but he hasn't DONE it yet. That's all I'm saying. I want to see him ACTUALLY HAVE one great season before they spend what could be $25 million guaranteed or more on him. If he does it this year, then great, pay him top dollar. IF.

Not sure why people are getting butthurt by me showing a guy's stats as not matching the public perception. I'm a Packer fan and a Finley fan. I'm also a realist, and I guess it bothers people that I'm looking at both sides and not just praising Finley as a superhero.

Finley has absolutely underachieved because of injuries. That concern is 100% valid and there is no reason to pay him until he plays an entire season healthy.

Even if he does, there is great chance he is franchised and they make him do it again, though I worry that he could be come a problem child if he's forced to play under the franchise tag.

Nonetheless, I think both points are valid. Finley is a superstar in waiting. I hope that it happens with the Packers, but he also has to prove he is consistent and dependable to garner a major contract.

I would suspect the Pack feel the same way.

For me the question is what do the Packers have to do to remain an elite team that has what it takes to continue to be successful and have a good chance every year to do what they did last year?

Teams that are at the top have common components that helps place them in this catagory of the teams with the ability to win the whole thing. First, they have an excellent QB. Secondly, they have an outstanding defense. One component that may not stand out but is there when you look at these teams is almost all have a very talented and productive TE.

I think McCarthy is in a great position this coming year because he has a wild card with Finley back that for the most part teams did not see last year. So teams with an off season to set up their D to try and stop the Packers will be very challenged as to how the Packers will attack them with Finley back in the picture.

So I predict Finley will be a huge part of the offensive success this coming year and Ted will do what he does which is keep the key core players on the team. As someone pointed out a hefty TE salary is not like what it is at some of the other positions.

I know someone is going to say "well, we won the SB without him" and my response is you can't keep doing the same thing with the same players and not expect defenses to start figuring out how to shut it down. With Finley back that becomes way more probematic then it would be if he were not out there.

Greg,

I don't think anyone is arguing against your point. Finley is clearly a beast and provides match up nightmares. However, that means nothing when he is consistently on the sideline in shorts. Dude has to find a way to stay on the field this season or I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone. That, or a HEAVY incentive laden contract. I could live with that, but I doubt Finley would go for it.
