Again with this Woodson to safety thing, does everyone forget we have a young probowl safety already there? and he's certainly not playing SS. This deal would never happen, nor would I want it to happen. Cb is the last place we need another top dollar player at, to many other positions to lock up.

Wood basically plays Nickle/SS/Linebacker right now, I dont really see him having issues at SS.

I don't like it. It would be outside the realm of what Ted did to build this team, with the exception of bringing Woodson in. We have Tramon on the other side, and within a year, Shields will be ready, IMO. Way too much money to bring a guy in that has very able people already in place.

This is my biggest problem, as well.

You have an area that's overflowing with talent (right now). I don't know if our secondary is the place we have to invest a ton of money in.

Preferably, we'd go out and get another OLB.

That said, if he comes at a discount, you really can't pass on him. Like Porky said, you can move Woodson to safety in base packages. Have a safety who's able to play up near the line and cover like a corner.

Then, since we're just about always in nickel, we could have the best rotation in the secondary in the league.

Asomugha (CB) - Williams (CB) - Woodson (S) - Collins (S)

Asomugha (CB) - Williams (CB) - Woodson (CB) - Collins (S) - Burnett/Peprah (S)

Asomugha (CB) - Williams (CB) - Shields (CB) - Woodson (S) - Collins (S)

That would be one heck of a rotation.

Woodson will never play SS, everyone needs to put that to rest a.s.a.p.
You don't take a hall of fame CB who will be turning 35 this year and put him into a position he has never played before. Being a roaming CB that blitzes, is a whole different story then being a full time SS.

Charles Woodson is open to moving to safety. At least, that's what he said a couple years ago.

Dont expect to see Asomugha and Revis join forces

Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha made some waves last offseason when he talked about joining forces with Darrelle Revis in New York at some point in the future.

Now that Asomugha is headed for free agency, speculation has picked up in New York about pairing the best two cornerbacks in football. Fortunately for the rest of the AFC, its unlikely to happen.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News has sources that says a marriage is unlikely. Asomugha will surely look to match Revis big contract, which makes a deal very tough to imagine. The Jets are expected to focus more on keeping their own guys, like free agent Antonio Cromartie.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote on Twitter Monday that he believes Asomugha will end up with the Jets or Packers.

I know him well. . . . Mark it down, White said.

So those are apparently the teams Asomugha wants to play for. Considering the money Packers G.M. Ted Thompson has invested in Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams, Asomugha probably wont get his wish.

Unless he's willing to work for free or close to it, he won't be playing for either the Jets or the Packers next year - neither has the money to sign him without gutting the rest of their team.

True, and I'm speaking in very general terms, for sure. Still, the Jets have a number of guys they have to lock up, and so do the Packers.

If it were affordable, it'd be sorely tempting, though I'll agree that Shields is on the upswing - I can't bring myself to say they don't need a player like Nnamdi, but CB isn't the weakest area on the team at all.

That's just one aspect of it. On one hand you've got to have room under the salary cap. On the other hand you have to actually have enough cash to pay out a contract. This isn't Monopoly money, and the Packers don't have a billionaire owner to bankroll a spending spree.

How old was Rod Woodson when he made the switch? How about Ronnie Lott? (I don't know the answer, but I seem to remember at least one of them switching in his mid-thirties.)

Here's my theory on Asomugha:

1. No way Ted shells out the bucks required to be competitive in the sweepstakes.
2. (assuming somehow #1 proves untrue) Whether this is good idea for the Packers depends primarily on what happens with Dom Capers. If Capers stays, then it seems to me it would work. Woodson isn't going to be bothered by shifting in a Capers scheme because he knows that Capers is one of the few DCs out there who maximizes the strengths of all his players and isn't as hung up on standard "base"/"nickel"/"dime" schemes that have CBs doing X and safeties doing Y. On the other hand, if/when Capers becomes HC somewhere else again, it would be easy to see one of those other, more standard, less innovative DCs taking over and trying to prong Woodson, et al into more limited kinds of roles.

I guess what I'm saying is: Adding Asomugha to a Capers-designed defense would be cool. Adding Asomugha to a non-Capers defense with the Packers current personnel would probably not work.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
