http://www.scoresreport.com/2011/01/10/will-asomugha-wind-up-with-the-jets-or-packers-next-season/

Yeah, I know it's way too early for off-season speculation, but these are always the funnest things to discuss.

According to a local Bay Area source, Asomugha will undoubted land in either New York or Green Bay. New York because he'd be playing opposite Darrelle Revis. Green Bay because Charles Woodson is his best friend.

I know. We never make these kinds of signings and our secondary is already good. But so is New York's. They have Revis, Cromartie, and Kyle Wilson manning the corners.

All I have to say is who knows?

Don't like to talk about the offseason right now because this season is still very much rolling, but Ill play along. First, this move probably won't happen. Ted Thompson has built a team via the draft and I can't see him changing his philosophy even if Asomugha wanted to come here.

However, if it did happen, it would mean a permanent move of Charles Woodson to safety. That doesnt mean a whole lot because GB plays a lot of nickel. Woodson would move to nickel CB or even rover in the Packers primary package. Morgan Burnett would then come in as the next DB off the bench to play the more traditional safety role.

Therefore, they could make it work. Still, it is not likely because of how the Packers handle their business.

Well, we all know that Ted's highest priority is signing his players' best friends.

Seriously, this would not jibe at all with Ted's philosophy, as porky explained, although I love his idea of Woodson being a "rover."

I love the overriding belief that Thompson is stubbornly set in his ways and circumstance plays no role in his decisions. I remember when people thought he would never trade up in the draft, or draft for need. I'm sure Ted Thompson and the front office explore every possible FA that could help the team. The fact of the matter is, the price tag is often just too high and it's not worth it. If Ted Thompson judges that it will give a net benefit to the team, he will pull the trigger.

You know how awesome that would make our defense, we could let Woodson basically just roam the field and attack from anywhere. Think of this Williams, Asomugha, Woodson, Burnett, Collins as our back end of the defense. Noone would try and throw the ball against us. And that would give Capers tons of freedom to call some exotic blitzes.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Again with this Woodson to safety thing, does everyone forget we have a young probowl safety already there? and he's certainly not playing SS. This deal would never happen, nor would I want it to happen. Cb is the last place we need another top dollar player at, to many other positions to lock up.

It would be a dream come true, for sure. Nnamdi is an outstanding player. I see the high dollar contract he'll command scaring the Packers away though. My view on Ted's philosophy is a little different than most. I don't think he dislikes free agency; not in the least. I think for him it's about having enough money to keep guys that are on the team and that he likes. Consistency from year to year. I wonder who the Packers would ultimately have to cut loose in order to fund Nnamdi's contract.

Charles Woodson (reportedly) advocated the signing of Nnamdi before he was franchised. I don't know how hard or whatever he pushed, but with the Raiders being so bad for so long, I could see Charles talking Nnamdi into coming here for a lower price for a 2 year contract to get a ring and then Nnamdi cashing in on Free Agency in '13.

I won't get my hopes up, but it certainly can't be dismissed either.

The emergence of Sam Shields I feel make this less likely in my opinion. We have two young promising guys in our secondary.

Also, the CBA plays a huge factor in this.

I don't like it. It would be outside the realm of what Ted did to build this team, with the exception of bringing Woodson in. We have Tramon on the other side, and within a year, Shields will be ready, IMO. Way too much money to bring a guy in that has very able people already in place.

What I got from that is that he would take less to play here, because of his relationship with Woody. Ted Thompson doesn't care if you're someone's buddy. But he DOES care about "value." He also cares about "team guys." Chemistry in the locker room.
Problem is, where would we fit him? I guess Shields could be the nickel guy for another year, but damn. I suppose it'd be a nice problem to have.
