SI Poll

WHICH NFL TEAM WOULD YOU LEAST LIKE TO PLAY FOR?

Oakland Raiders 20%
Buffalo Bills 14%
Green Bay Packers 13%
Detroit Lions 12%
Cleveland Browns 7%

FAST FACTS

Players could not vote for their own team....The Raiders have gone 27--79 since end of the 2002 season.... The Bills, who fired coach Dick Jauron last week, have not made the playoffs since 1999....The Packers, who have won a record 12 league titles but none since after the 1996 season, were the least desirable team among players who have been in the league for five or fewer seasons, drawing 16% of their vote.

Based on a survey of 296 NFL players

There is no way GB will get quality free agents unless they change the opinion of the players. The only way to do that is to pay top dollar (maybe more) to the best free agents.

I think your idea of paying them more will change their opinion is very silly... mainly because one of the top two team that pays top dollar the most is #1 on the list...

The Raiders and Redskins pay top dollar more than any of the the other teams because they stupidly pick up and clearly over pay their own and FAs.

Other than the Packers they all are long time losers, most of them are cold weather places and most of them are the smaller places in the NFL. Also as Woodson has talked about Green Bay has a rep for not being a place for African American though he later has said that rep is wrong but still that's the rep...

The only thing the Packers could do about this is win... and be the great organization they already are.

The reputation is probaby from the population of African-Americans in comparison to Caucasians. It's not saying that Green Bay is a racist hick town but simply a ratio problem that gives people false ideas.

You take from that poll that players don't want to come because they feel they won't get paid?

"DanJustDan29" wrote:

I am sure there are several reasons they do not want to come to GB.
1. They have been losing for the past couple of seasons. (All the other teams on the list have had losing records too.)
2. They probably feel Ted is a hard negotiator.
3. GB is a tiny town and young people want more excitiment than they can get in GB.
4. It is too cold in GB.
5. GB is not culturally mixed city.

There are only two ways to overcome this thinking. Winning and money.

They played in the NFC Championship game during the last couple of seasons.

All right. I took a short cut. I had hoped the posters on the site here would not have me spell it all out.

2005 4-12
2006 8-8 after really stinking the 1st part of the year. Their 8th win was against a Bears team that pulled all their starters for the playoffs.
2007 13-3
2008 6-10

Long story (that was short and now long thank you) GB has in deed struggled for most of the past few years.

That was almost 20 years ago now. Most of the younger players don't remember the impact of that signing.

I think it's fairly obvious why players don't want to play for the Packers. Green Bay is a white conservative or maybe laid back is a better word area that lives and breathes football 24/7. There is no escape from football and really there is nothing fun to do in the city at least compared to some of your bigger cities. The nightlife is weak and the city sleeps unless you're talking about a Packer game. That's really when the city starts buzzing.

Beyond that it's blue collar and quite frankly, it's old. The young people reside in Madison.

The Packers' job shouldn't be to change the perception for everybody, it should be to change the perception of the player they'd like to sign.

I am not into racial pointing of fingers but in the last 10 years (maybe it is not true today) the black men on the team were complaining that they can not even get a decent haircut in GB. They have to drive to Milwaukee to find a good barber.
There has to be other things the players consider to be problematic.

Actually from my understanding of African-American culture hair is actually a huge part of who they are. I can see that actually being a problem for some players (but most likely their wives/girlfriends). Say what you will but Blacks are different from Whites. It's discrimination based on the differences that's wrong. If a Black guy is living in a predominately White town they may not feel able to fully appreciate their locale.

How far is the drive from Green Bay to Milwaukee? It seems like a lot of players go to Mil on a regular basis to get a taste of the night life. That's actually a plus in my opinion (not for the players but for our football team). That a player actually has to plan a night out instead of saying "I'll just hit the clubs tonight" and be there in 10 minutes. This weeds out a lot of the problem players.

This has to do with AGENTS. Their influence on players is remarkable.

Face it... Agents are looking for more than a commission on a a dollar amount in a contract. Agents are selling a player on what revenue they can bring into that players coffers with endorsements.

A big city will bring in astronomically more money to that player in appearance fees and possible endorsement monies.

That is a fact, and a reality in the free agent market. Ted Thompsoncan not do anything about it. His hands are tied. It is Green Bay.

This is one thing that the Ted Thompsonhaters continue to not understand about the choices he has to make when chasing Free Agents he would like to sign IF HE COULD.

"RaiderPride" wrote:

Part of the reason I posted this was to give proof that Ted DOES have a problem signing free agents. "Ted haters" prob still do not believe it.

And part of it is to say ok there is a prob but what does Ted do to overcome this? If it is not spending money then what?

2 hours is a long way to go to get a hair cut. I am about 1/2 from the big box stores so I do not go very often.
It is tough to "go out on the town" and then have to drive 2 hours to get home. And to get a room for the night makes it an expensive night out. Something they would not have to do in most other cities.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress

Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Sure does feel like site is more snappy
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
