You're welcome.

Actually, apart from the game day chat, grocery shopping remains the social event of my week (at least on those weeks when I don't take The Mom along).

My life has been reduced to celebrating sales on big bologna.

Well, at the rate the Packers are playing this season, I may be a cigarette smoker by the end of the year. 😞

As much as I'm against the government taking over control of every aspect of our lives, I'm just as against any modification to current laws that would result in more idiots on and off the road. More people smoking pot is not a good thing any way you cook it. Sure, there're responsible people out there, but there's 10 times as many that are just too retarded and/or lazy to be trusted with another drug to waste their money and lives on.

Now, if pot were legal, I wouldn't support banning it.

Then again, the federal government giving up some control to state government is another plus... I'm kind of torn.

Porforis, it would be just as illegal to drive under the influence of intoxicating cannabis as it would be to drive under the influence of intoxicating alcohol. And the likelihood is that anyone who would do so if it were legal is already doing it anyway.

So you're basically saying that there would be almost no new pot smokers if it were legalized? Or more people more willing to smoke it openly?

I've argued in another thread that any increase in drug consumption would be transient at worst, but that is irrelevant to what I was saying here. My point was that anyone idiotic enough to drive under the influence of pot is going to do so whether or not it's illegal to consume. Just as it's always been illegal to drive drunk, yet people still do it.

The argument that drugs should be illegal to protect the risk takers is a non-starter. The risk takers are the ones taking drugs when they're illegal.

Roughly 13,000 of the inmates currently in Illinois prisons are serving time for non-violent, Class 4 felony drug possession. Not drug dealing, drug possession.

I understand the cost per inmate is in the neighborhood of $20,000 annually (plus or minus 5 grand). So, some quick math., 13,000 inmates times $20,000 each is $260 million.

Let's say we can put them into drug rehab for half that. That's $130 million annual savings. That sure helps close the structural deficit.

1. Marijuana is an unknown as a drug. Technically classified as a hallucinogen it shares aspects of all 5 types of drugs.

While many drugs clearly fall into the category of either stimulant, depressant, or hallucinogen, cannabis exhibits a mix of all properties, perhaps leaning the most towards hallucinogen or psychedelic properties, though with other effects quite pronounced as well.

Wikipedia

2. Largely believed to spread cancer Cannabis actually has never been proven to do so. In fact, the exact opposite has been found.

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

Source

3. Ending marijuana prohibition would eliminate the black market that's been created for it since it's much easier to cultivate than any other "drug." That means all related crime would effectively be eliminated as well. Organized crime would lose power and support.

4. Tax-payers money would not be spent on marijuana related inmates. In addition marijuana would be taxed making it profitable for the government. The black market for marijuana is the by far the largest for every drug hauling in an estimated $140 billion dollars annually, worldwide. Cocaine, the next highest drug on the market gets only half of that at $70 billion. Source .

5. It would allow police officers to spend time doing real police work instead of arresting young adults. The key here is the responsibility of the user, not the effects of the "drug."

6. Alcohol is easily a more dangerous drug. Easily. In fact there have been a few studies done of people driving under the influence of pot. The findings? High drivers tend to drive slower and more carefully.

Concerns about stoned drivers careening across our nation's highways are frequently cited as a justification for the continued criminalization of marijuana. Given the massive casualties associated with drunk driving, it's easy to understand how the specter of increased roadside fatalities can be effective in reinforcing negative attitudes about marijuana. However, a new report reveals that, while stoned driving isn't smart, it's hardly the death sentence some would have us believe.

Although acute cannabis intoxication following smoking has been shown to mildly impair psychomotor skills, this impairment is seldom severe or long lasting. In closed course and driving simulator studies, marijuanas acute effects on psychomotor performance include minor impairments in tracking (eye movement control) and reaction time, as well as variation in lateral positioning, headway (drivers under the influence of cannabis tend to follow less closely to the vehicle in front of them), and speed (drivers tend to decrease speed following cannabis inhalation). In general, these variations in driving behavior are noticeably less consistent or pronounced than the impairments exhibited by subjects under the influence of alcohol. Also, unlike subjects impaired by alcohol, individuals under the influence of cannabis tend to be aware of their impairment and try to compensate for it accordingly, either by driving more cautiously or by expressing an unwillingness to drive altogether.

I don't condone driving high, in fact I think driving under the influence of any substance is stupid.

If you have any more questions about cannabis feel free to ask. As someone who smokes it time-to-time I felt the need to research it when I myself questioned it's illegality. I think alcohol is a lot worse. I'm not saying marijuana is perfect and has no problems. Laziness is one of the biggest problems I have with it. But what's wrong with being a responsible user in the comfort of your own home? Marijuana is widely enough available that anyone who wants it can already find it. Ending the prohibition would allow it to be regulated properly so it's taxed and not sold to minors. Like all problems I think education and understanding the issue is most important.

People in jail for drugs don't usually get there because they were caught one time with one joint.
There are reasons they are locked up.
And besides, it IS illegal, and if you choose to break the law, then you also choose the consequences.
I don't feel too sorry for people locked up in that case. They did the crime, now comes the time.
If "expense" is the reason you argue to do away with locking them up, then might as well just keep going and do away with even bigger laws.

It depends where you are in the country. People actually do get locked up for small amounts. My problem is that these are non-violent offenders. They had what was deemed "too much pot" so they get thrown in jail. Why not just admit them into substance abuse programs? Why not let them have treatment? Locking someone up for smoking weed is ridiculous.

Under federal law, marijuana is treated like every other controlled substance, such as cocaine and heroin. The federal government places every controlled substance in a schedule, in principle according to its relative potential for abuse and medicinal value. Under the CSA, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug, which means that the federal government views marijuana as highly addictive and having no medical value.

If convicted and sentenced to jail, a minimum of 85% of that sentence must be served. The higher the marijuana amount, the more likely one is to be sentenced to jail time, as opposed to probation or alternative sentencing. Low-level offenses, even with multiple prior convictions, may end up with probation for the entire sentence of one to twelve months, and no jail time required.

Marijuana is less of a problem than alcohol and yet alcohol is legal while marijuana is not. People get drunk and do lots of stupid shit like break things, get into fights, drive, get alcohol poisoning, accidentally drown themselves (happens a lot more than you think) and overall make decisions they regret. If you get high the stupidest thing your going to do is eat too much food or waste four hours of your day in which you could have been productive. Not to mention that you can't overdose on marijuana.
