Give Cowher 3 years and gruden 2 to turn the team around. If neither do, Brett will finally be retired, and can take the job.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

It took Cowher 14 seasons to win a Superbowl with Pittsburgh.

I seriously doubt any of us would be willing to wait that to see if McCarthy will win one.

Grass isn't always greener. We need new linemen and to bring in proven talent. People can't keep using Woodson, Chillar, and Pickett as proof that Ted Thompson uses free agency. That is 3 guys out 53 on our roster.

There's a reason why Cowher was afforded so many years.

I like discussing this during this bye week.

The BIGGEST reason I like Cowher is because he does not leave any confusion with anyone about his displeasure.

I am SO tired of the mamsy-pamsy "say something, but really nothing" that seems so evident with Mike.

Bill learned a thing or two along the way in his quest for a Super-bowl, would we not agree?

Off the top of my head, I'd also say that he probably faced some stiffer competition, as well. I don't have a stat or anything, just a memory.

He brings a no-nonsense, hard-edge approach to the game.

We would have still lost against the Bungals, maybe...but as an example, I am pretty damn sure that we would ALL (as in the entire viewing audience) know how Bill Cowher felt about Barbre's performance in that football game.

This thought gives me some comfort going forward, even if it is idle speculation. In a way, I am toning down my rhetoric a few notches...after all, I wanted to either shoot or "part out" Justin Harrell in the past... :thumbleft:

Let's look at Cowher's coaching record for a moment:
Season Postseason
Year Record Finish Record Result
1992 11-5 1st AFCC 0-1 Lost to Bills in AFC Divisional Game
1993 9-7 2nd AFCC 0-1 Lost to Chiefs in AFC Wild-Card Game
1994 12-4 1st AFCC 1-1 Lost to Chargers in AFC Championship Game
1995 11-5 1st AFCC 2-1 Lost to Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX
1996 10-6 1st AFCC 1-1 Lost to Patriots in AFC Divisional Game
1997 11-5 1st AFCC 1-1 Lost to Denver Broncos in AFC Championship Game
1998 7-9 3rd AFCC
1999 6-10 4th AFCC
2000 9-7 3rd AFCC
2001 13-3 1st AFCC 1-1 Lost to Patriots in AFC Championship Game
2002 10-5-1 1st AFCN 1-1 Lost to Titans in AFC Divisional Game
2003 6-10 3rd AFCN
2004 15-1 1st AFCN 1-1 Lost to Patriots in AFC Championship Game
2005 11-5 2nd AFCN 4-0 Won Super Bowl XL
2006 8-8 3rd AFCN

Total 149-90-1 .623 12-9 .571
Though his overall record is amazing (only 4 non-winning seasons in 15 years), I do wonder how many members on this board would have concluded, after the first five years or so, that Cowher was the kind of coach who "couldn't win the big game"? That his .454 postseason record in his first six seasons was unacceptable given Green Bay's storied tradition of winning?

I'm as iconoclastic as the next man, but never forget that it took Cowher 14 years to win the big game. If you''re willing to give him the kind of patience that Steelers' management gave him, I think the move could be a good one. If he only gets four years before he's given the old heave-ho, then I think it's pointless.

I think Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson are on the hot seat if this team wins 6 or less games With that said I also think Cowher is a non-factor..he is eying the Panthers job.
If Mike McCarthy goes and Ted Thompson stays then coaches like Mike S and Cowher are out of the equation as they want more say so in personal then Ted Thompson will give.

What only four games and a .500 record can do to a fanbase...

Why set yourself up for major disappointment?

Cowher will either coach North Carolina State or the Carolina Panthers. This has been well known for a while now.

He's not coming to Green Bay.

Another thing with cowher. I would not want a steeler legend coaching our team, simply because his legacy is as a steeler. I want to create our own history ya know?

Fosterf, I agree with your choice, if we were to need or want a new head coach (see, I noticed you weren't so much calling for McCarthy's head now, but rather if the team should continue to falter). I do think it's more than just a willingness to display displeasure, and I think you do as well - but that's certainly a start.

I would insist that he does have someone in a GM/Talent Acquisition position, though - I do not believe that the HC/GM paradigm is a sound one. I'm open to him dumping Ted if he didn't think he could get the job done, or at a minimum a mandate from the board and Murphy that Ted begin to explore the joys of activity in the free agency cycle. I would also insist that whatever Offensive Coordinator he brings in would run an Aaron Rodgers-friendly scheme - keep what works, don't you know.

IF he were willing to leave the East coast, it would take a lot of money. We should all recognize this; we would have to overpay to get him to do it. We - and by this I mean the entire Packer World - would also have to adopt a patient stance. You don't bring a Cowher in and then start crying for a new coach after two seasons have passed without a Super Bowl ring. If Packers fans want what Patriots/Steelers fans enjoy (a sense that they're in it every year), they need to realize that those things are only possible with consistency up high - if it were otherwise, teams like the Redskins would win every year.

Yes - if McCarthy can't turn this around, his continued employment should be considered critically. If Thompson manages to go through this bye and let the deadline pass without at a bare minimum bringing Tauscher back, then I'm going to start watching him very, very closely. Both he and McCarthy are showing alarming stubbornness in the face of clear logic, and I don't like it.

The one thing McCarthy has on his side is that - thus far - Minnesota's starting to look like they might just round into form and be a serious road grader. If they don't stumble, the Packers' inability to excel will get muted by a lot of "Nobody else had a chance" sentiment. That might help him out from a national perspective, but Packer fans, we'll know - and we'll remember.

Get it fixed, Mike. No more "we need to get it fixed" - GET. IT. FIXED. It's been a goal for quite some time, now. Achieve the goal, Mike. Get it fixed.
