The exact same thing happened to him in college. He was initially very possibly the best in the business, and then had a rather dramatic fall-off.

Edit--- Check this out. This article says almost the exact thing I'm trying to say.

Player Profile; Aaaron Rouse

"dfosterf" wrote:

Wow, that article says it all, and it was written before he was drafted. He was a third-round pick who would've made everyone jealous if he had panned out, because he could've turned out to be great.

Rouse was one of those freakish players like that Matt Jones guy the Jaguars drafted late in the first round as a WR a few years ago even though he had played QB in college. Jones is out of the league now because of drug problems, but even before that he was not the impact player they had hoped he would be. Sometimes you roll the dice on guys like that.

At least Rouse was drafted where he was expected to go, so he wasn't exactly a reach, but he was a feast-or-famine pick.

^^^^ no it says he got the picks from Rodgers, apparently they go way back since they're both from Cal

"Felipe7777777" wrote:

No, he got one from Rodgers.

Giordano got off to a good start with two interceptions in his first practice on Wednesday, including one off his former college teammate. Facing uncertainty himself as far as his role for Sunday, Giordano's focus is on getting up to speed with the playbook as quickly as he can in case he is pressed into duty.

"Look for another reason to piss and moan about the management"

Dude, WTF?? Are you serious? Do you have ANY clue what you're talking about? I have been a Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson supporter since the beginning. Do not use that rhetoric on me. It's not going to work. I do not look for reasons to slam our management team. However, when I do see things that I personally think our mistakes, I call them out. I'm not going to blindly follow them.

And as far as looking for current events to discuss, how is discussing the current state of our safety position not relevant? So, we're conversing on an internet forum, yet to reference any actions made a few months ago is prohibited? That's BS. Actions made over the past couple months directly affect where the Packers are at today, making them very relevant.

Let's see, better not talk at all about the Cincy game huh, since that's done, gone, and over with? Makes perfect sense. NOT.

Like I said, if we start showing significant improvement, then I'm sure I'll have much better things to ponder and / or discuss. However, when we lay an egg like we did last week, I'm going to discuss actions that I think contributed to getting us there.

"In our conversation with him I just felt that his ability to be consistent and the growth part of it is one of the reasons that we made the change," McCarthy said. "But there are other factors involved based on availability, without getting into all of that. That's really the landscape of personnel in the National Football League, timing and things like that, special teams. That was all part of our decision."

Here we go with the availability rationale again. I totally agree with it -- don't get me wrong -- I just wish they'd be a little more consistent in their application of it.

Could there be a little panicking going on from the front office, or is this just a wake-up call to the rest of the team?

IMHO it is the latter, get it together boys and start playing to your potential or you will be looking for a new team to play on.

"buckeyepackfan" wrote:

The front office probably is confirming most of their fears right now but I agree with you. The team needs to get it together. Ray Lewis said it best: Players make plays. Coaches make decisions. And while MM's decisions aren't always the best, our players need to stop making mistakes and start making play

It's easy to say that the Packers made a mistake now that we have three (err one was cut today) safeties nursing injuries. Am I saying you waited until that happened to mention the mistake? Nope. Am I questioning whether you have a 'clue' as to what you're talking about? Nope. I did quote you and made a comment I was directing towards a mass of people who doing just that, not specifically you. My fault for not being clear.

I'm saying. Steelers cut him, Packers cut him and he's a backup on the worst team in the NFL.

Reports on Smith were that he missed assignments, couldn't play special teams as well as desired and we had a rumor that the coach did not like his attitude. Add in we made a trade for Derick Martin who also has played in a 3 - 4 and (reportedly) is better on special teams. Based on that information. Would it be smart to keep a player like that?

Smith, Martin, Rouse were back up's fighting for two backup spots. And as a back up you need to be able to fill another role if possible.

I believe they kept bush for his CB "skills" and special teams and his versatility to play safety. I say we should have kept Smith over Bush, but I don't think Smith is a decent CB and apparently he's not too good on special teams.

So they kept Rouse and Martin. Cutting Smith go, makes sense to me when I factor everything in.

Now ... apparently the Packers feel Rouse is always going to under perform and be injured, so they cut him loose and added another safety to the roster hoping for improvement.

In my opinion, I don't see cutting Smith as a mistake from the information I've read and seen of him. Now, if it came down to Bush or Smith, hell yes, it was a mistake and we should have kept Smith, especially since Martin can play CB. But if the rumor was true about his attitude ... good riddance. I think more was involved than just that, but I don't think it should be over looked.

I agree with the end of your post, completely. But wouldn't you rather be reading information on Derick Martin and Matt Giordano (current Packers) and how they are going to make us better instead of lashing out at members about a player who was cut weeks ago and whether or not it was a mistake? Fine, it was a mistake, let's move on. The Packers are trying to correct that 'mistake'. Let's go about our business.
