NFP-Critical Time for cap planning; Brandt

Why is it unlikely that veteran players such as Jeff Garcia, A.J. Feeley, Zach Thomas, Jon Runyan, Sean Mahan and others will be signed this week?

The reason is the rule requiring vested veterans who are on opening-day rosters to receive full salary in the form of termination pay if they are released. Teams are careful to note any vested players on their roster at the start of the season, as they are financially committed to them for the year.

This doesnt mean that these players wont be signed soon, but its unlikely to be this week. After this week, the requirement to vested players is a four-week requirement, a far cry from a full year.

Teams routinely play the circumvention game during this week, signing a vested veteran early in the week and releasing him before the weekend, thus avoiding the termination pay requirement.

In that case, the player gets paid his weeks salary but doesnt count on the opening-day roster for those purposes. Ive seen firsthand teams play fast and loose with these rules, and it was frustrating to deal with from a competitive standpoint.

A 39 year old QB who hasn't been in the Packers system, plus he's injury prone and hasn't play 14 games since 2002

over

A 24 year old QB who has been in the Packers system and has a heck lot of upside and could be the #2 for years.

If your taking cutting Flynn for Garcia I hope your planing on drafting a QB in next year's draft. Because getting rid of Flynn could mess up the #2 for years and if Rodger goes down then (you know when Garcia is retired than the Packers are in huge trouble... can't just think about one year)

Flynn won't want to stay a back up forever. He didn't come into the NFL to back up. We aren't grooming Flynn to take Rodgers spot. We are grooming him as trade bait for the future. Rogers is our future. there is no point keeping 2 young QB's on the staff that have futures as starters.(If Flynn does have a future as a starter.) Garcia can be a reliable back up for a few years.

I would prefer to keep Flynn as our #3 and continue to develop him. Then we trade him.

I'd rather keep the roster spot then bring in an old injury prone vet that even in his prime people complained he didn't have the arm strength that people wanted

Some great points made and glad to see that people are on both sides of the line.

Dhazer pretty much ended the thread with fact though...Garcia wants to be a starting quarterback so bringing him in is not possible.

Is he old? Yes....Can the old man play ball? Yes....
I would not want him on the Packers. I think Flynn is a solid back-up for the Packers and I personally think Flynn will always be a back-up quarteback in the NFL.

I think Garcia would fit in somewhere like KC or maybe even Denver.

Apart from the Garcia discussion...the Oakland Raiders are listed under the word FAIL while looking in a dictionary. I swear, Al Davis is the biggest moron in the NFL. JeMarcus Russell is a horrible quarterback. He has nothing special surrounding him. I feel bad for that entire organization and its fanbase....

end rant*

Yeah I'll take in Garcia, as long as Flynn had a chance to demonstrate something and another player is IRed and not cut just to fit Garcia on the roster.

I'd stay away from Harrington though, there's plenty of other mediocre QBs that I have more faith in.

Well we do have 3 Fullbacks that can be sent to PS and if Rodgers gets hurt. Yeah Garcia has not been in the system and not played more than 14 games in a season. But who is asking him to play all of 16 games? If Rodgers gets hurt then we put him in and Rodgers has proven to play through pain. Flynn is also injured still, and you would like to see him play. Right

This is the entire point of picking up a Garcia.

Anyone that is still not understanding this....

Rodgers goes down. In comes Flynn. Flynn sucks. (this is scenario, not a prediction)

Now what?

As far as what Garcia wants. I want to have 12 girlfriends, no wives and no one bitching at me.

I think Kuhn and Hall have played to many games to be able to go on the PS according to NFL's rules on PS and Johnson would probably be picked up by another team first.

Also a lot of people are hating on keeping 3 FBs and I don't get it... they're talented to make it.

Also a player has to be at least a little banged up to send them to the IR or the NFL will put there nose into it....

So that leaves the Packers with Raji, Jackson and Blackmon... and I don't want to sent any of them to the IR and Raji and Jackson back-up positions that aren't too deep in depth.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league

Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : This page was generated in 0.135 seconds.
Mucky Tundra (7-Aug) : Tbh, I can never tell the difference in speed unless it's completely shitting the bed
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Sure does feel like site is more snappy
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : found bad sql in database, maybe site faster now?
dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
