Injury update:

Conversations with five doctors, visits to at least two and new medication have end Justin Harrell optimistic again or at least speaking that way about his chances for continuing his NFL career.

Harrell acknowledged last week he feared his playing days were over because of the chronic back problems that have sidelined him the past two weeks. But he said on Tuesday hes feeling better this week and, when asked whether hell play again, Harrell responded quickly, Without a doubt.

Its one of them things Im going to have to deal with as long as I play football, the back flaring up, he said. Hopefully, next time it happens, well be more educated and it wont take as long to get back out there.

According to Harrell, two surgeries last year for a bulging disc left pretty much bone on open bone between two of his lower vertebrae. Thats the source of the discomfort that first sidelined Harrell in this camp on Aug. 6, but he said hes received reassurances doctors can treat it with medicine and perhaps a pain-killing injection, not further surgery.

You always start thinking down the road not being able to walk and things like that, he said. But just talking with to all the doctors Im not doing really any more damage to my back by playing, so that helps get over the hump a little bit, and now its just trying to get the pain down where I can get back out there and play.

He said there's no timetable for that to happen.

In other injury news ...

* Cornerback/return man Will Blackmon (bruised quad) all but ruled himself out for Friday. It's a bruise, so we're just going to take care of it, said Blackmon, who was injured while blitzing in Saturdays preseason game. I don't really know the timetable, but I would think I'd be ready either next week or for the opener.

* ILB Desmond Bishop was limited in practice because of a bruised toe. Hell be re-evaluated today.

* QB Matt Flynn (right shoulder) will travel to Arizona for Friday's preseason game, but it remains unclear whether he'll play. "We plan on him dressing and we're taking him," coach Mike McCarthy said. "Just going off the feedback from Matt and Dr. McKenzie. I wouldn't be surprised if he's close tomorrow."

* DE Johnny Jolly (ankle) returned.

Some comments on harrell ...

So what does he do doctor shop until one says something he wants to hear?

Granted I would want another opinion too if a doc told me I couldnt play. But meds and a shot ... those are something they try before surgery not after.

Id really like the guy to get better - we could use another big guy up front.

But there is a reason why I see so many 'failed' back surgeries.
It sounds like they could of done a discectomy which is a pretty serious op for someone so young as harrell and in a professional sport.

reason I am writing this ... I just want the guy to get the right treatment and be able to play - and I get frustrated.

This is getting a bit like the Favre "will he, won't he" scenario.

This quote didn't exactly fill me with hope: "Its one of them things Im going to have to deal with as long as I play football, the back flaring up."

The fact is you can't be out there if you know after a while your back's just going to blow out. What use are you???

Now I'm not against Harrell, like most I feel really sorry for what's happened to him (especially with his strong start to training camp), but do we keep him on the final roster knowing he might only make a play or two and then he's got to sit out a bunch of games (or the rest of the season)?

Unless the news is he's better and can play not much has changed.

As far as I am concerned, Justin Harrell is like that really sweet girl who always smiles brightly every time you walk up to her, yet every time you try to iron down a time and day for a date, she's always elusive, full of mysterious excuses why she can't actually go out with you. You keep trying and trying, because you're convinced she must like you -- she's so friendly, after all -- but she's like the mist: you can grab her, but she slips between your fingers. Then one day you wake up and realize that she's that friendly with EVERYONE, and it suddenly hits you: If she treats everyone the same, that means you're not special, and that you never really had a chance in the first place.

I know that seems kind of harsh, but I'm pretty tired of the "I'm better! I'm worse!" drama that is Justin Harrell. He's been given plenty of time to demonstrate his value and he's done anything but. Spare him, the team, and the fans the misery and let him go already.

Yup....i agree Non.
Sadly, it looks like the kid will never play.
I mean, how CAN he, when every play he's out there you have to worry that he might go down?
How can you game plan to have him in, when after 3 plays he might be done? You better have a STRONG "plan B" if you keep him on the roster.

If you're going to keep him on the roster, I think HE should be the plan B. Or C. Or . . . 😉

Nobody has ever accused you of being overly emotionally attached to a player. lol Possibly this is an exception...going the opposite way...I will explain in a moment.

Let's get down to business, as that is almost invariably how you roll, and dfoster --most of the time.

He came in to this league with an 8 million dollar guarantee. He got no signing bonus, but we have been shoveling $$$ his way in the past two years. He got a multi-million dollar bonus this past off-season. That money is all gone, and he is quite close to that guaranteed portion of his contract.

He has a 460k base with a 186k LTBE for this year. He has NO PRSB, we paid as we played, cap-hit wise for that. He will not see that 186k ltbe either, because he has to (probably) be on the active roster in order to get it, week-to-week.

This one is not directed at you Non, as you already know it.

HE IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR PUP LIKE HE WAS LAST YEAR.

I'm not going to explain that--I have 3 times---Now anybody that still doesn't get it can find out for themselves.

HE CANNOT GO DIRECTLY TO INJURED RESERVE

I have already explained that once--just once-- so slightly smaller type, lol, but again, if that is not habla'd---too bad--it was explained already ---

(Again, not directed at you, Non)

THE PRICE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN IR (paid $$$) AND A RELEASE IS NOT $460, 000. IT IS PROBABLY CLOSER TO ZERO as in $0, nad zilch squadoosh, diddly squat-shit....etc.

Anybody ever hear of an injury settlement?

Again, all has been explained---AT LENGTH-- If you have Dfosterf on ignore, I understand, but Jesus H Cripes I have seen so many false assumptions on this issue... someone needs to PM the member that does have me on ignore and tell him/her to possibly check in on at least this issue.

(AGAIN not directed at you, Non--I happen to know you have stayed up to date on those info posts by having read your posts)

So, what will happen with Justin? Yes, he will be "sent" to IR---but again, not directly.

The official designation will be "Injured/waived" WAIVED

...as in ----eligible for pick up by any team willing to acknowledge him as an injured player and further willing to accept him as such.

THEN, if he clears waivers, we can EITHEREITHER place him on IR--with his 460k salary burden OR release him WITH AN INJURY SETTLEMENT THAT WILL LIKELY BE THE SAME AS HIS SALARY IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Business is business. There is the business side of it.

That is the process he will go through, regardless if he is "cut loose" or "stashed on IR"

This is not a rant, this is a repeat performance of stuff already said.

We all know the other option is to make him part of the 53, in which case Dfosterf WILL be publishing a rant post.

I feel bad about his injury but Harrell is hurting the team not only in lack of performance but also in preventing consistency in the defensive lineup.

I remember when he was picked in the draft and everyone knew he was a gamble or else he would have been picked sooner. This unfortunately is one risk that did not pay off.

I hope he can, if healthy he would be a nice addition. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Foster, I understand that there is no financial benefit to cutting him whatsoever. In fact, it would be more financially expensive to sign another player in his place than to keep him on the roster.

That being said, keeping Harrell on the roster occupies a valuable roster spot that could be devoted to someone actually able to perform the job. I would rather cut Harrell, take the financial hit of signing another player who can start 16 games, and accept a reduced level of talent for an increased level of consistency. If the Cowboys, Redskins, and Patriots have proved anything, it's that it's not the most talented teams that win championships but the most consistent. I would far rather have a consistent defensive line than one with an incredible amount of talent but no reliability. Let's bring in a journeyman lineman who can get the job done for a season without endangering his future ability to walk.

dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
