2018
Josh Jackson, Oren Burks, J'Mon Moore, Cole Madison, and JK Scott were all selected between Alexander and MVS. All those guys are busts.

Elgton Jenkins was a stud. I think he's regressed since his knee injury. You can't blame Gutey for that, but they aren't getting the kind of play I think they thought they were going to get when they signed him to a second contract. I have a hunch he could be back to form next year

2020
Jon Runyan Jr - He probably gets a second contract. He's a serviceable guard. Every team has a guy like him as a starter. He's someone you can depend on to play, but you wouldn't want him to be one of your 5 best players on offense.

As you said, lots of teams have a guy like him starting because OL across the league doesn't seem as team as deep as it used to be, and that's why I truly believe any long term successful GM needs to be decent at finding QB and OL.

Quay Walker is fast. That's it. He tackles too high and the mental mistakes are disconcerting.

Devonte Wyatt I like. It takes DL longer to adjust to the game (unless your Kenny Clark).

Usually DTs absolutely suck in year one... and have a big jump in year two. Wyatt didn't absolutely suck last year, so I was expecting that with that big jump he'd be breaking out, but that hasn't happened.

But part of me feels like this defense is set up to stop high explosive passing attacks from keeping up with a high explosive Packers offense.... but the Packers offenses isn't that, and therefore the defensive scheme is set up wrong for what they have going on this season.

He may be the best potential player on this team, but he has not played like that. He has misses run fits often and is slow to realize who is in his zone when we are in zone coverage.

He is not even the best linebacker on this team.

He may be the an All-Pro someday but he has been mistake prone.

Ironically, I thought he played zone coverage very well in college. I also think he could be used as a spy on more athletic QBs because of his speed. The former hasn't translated to the pros quite yet, but you see glimpses.

Overall, best player on the defense? He's not even the best linebacker when Campbell is fully healthy, and he doesn't come close to being the blue chip player that Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark are.

Porky you have some of the best posts year after year. I respect the fact that you laid out your assessment of the draft on a player by player basis. For the most part I either agree with your comments or at the very least don't feel compelled to dispute them.

Out of curiosity I went to the football reference page to look at the rushing leaders. I was trying to see where Jones is all time. Back in TC I remember thinking if he had a really really good year he might put himself into a position to move up the list. After missing so many games and then playing sparingly in his other games he won't achieve MY goal this year. He has 5480 rushing yards. Ahman Green and Jim Taylor are both over 8200. I don't see Jones being able to pass them without playing at least 3 more seasons. That doesn't seem likely.

My comment to you is- after looking at Jones' numbers I decided to look at Dillon. I was a little surprised to see he is #19 overall with 2121 yards. While it is true that he was a 2nd round selection, I don't see how he can be called a bust when he is in the top 20 for a franchise that has been around for more than 100 years. He has had around 800 yards the past two seasons. If he meets that this year he will slip between Eddie Lee Ivery and James Starks at #16. That's respectable. Not a world beater but it is respectable at least to me.

Dillon has had only 3 fumbles in his career. Only Clarke Hinkle had fewer. In 1171 attempts, he NEVER fumbled the ball. If I expand the pool out to look at the top 25 only Jamaal Williams can claim to have never fumbled. His 4.1 average is respectable when compared to the rest of the top 20. His TDs are lacking a little but I believe that is because he plays behind Jones. His 40 yards per game average is 10th among this group. That is somewhat skewed because QBs Rodgers and Tobin Rote are in this top 20 group. Then again so are Hall of Famer Tony Canadeo with 36.2, Dorsey Levens 38.6, Clarke Hinkle 34.2 and Gerry Ellis at 37.1 all are top 10 in total yards for the Packers.

In short- I would say that I hoped for more from Quadzilla when he was drafted but I would not put him into the bust camp. I would say he will be a "B" to "C" player for the Packers when he is done. Which would bring up an interesting discussion. Who are the overall "A" RB for GB? I would say it goes down as far as Paul Hornung at #10. He has 3711 yards. It's kind of difficult to say Ivery at 2933 would be too. But he is only #15. Surely the team has had 15 RB that merit being called "A" talent. Not Hall of Fame but, for the time they were in GB, they earned an "A" grade.

Anyone can have 5000 yards rushing if they received enough carries. Dillon is averaging 4.1 YPC for his career and trending down when he should be entering his prime years. Dillon's YPC has dropped from 4.3 in 2021 to 4.1 in 2022 to 3.3 in 2023. None of these numbers are particularly great. 3.3 is pitiful.

Aaron Jones' career average is 5.1. That's a 1-yard difference compared to Dillon's. It may not seem like a lot, but that's a huge difference. Ahman Green averaged 4.5 for his career. He had 5.3 in 2003, which was his best sesaon. Can you imagine Dillon coming close to that? I certainly can't.

You can point to a guy like Edgar Bennett, who had a terrible YPC. However, Bennett was a threat as a receiver out of the backfield. Dillon hasn't done much as a receiver, so you can't call him a dual threat.

If he were a fifth round pick, then maybe this output would be acceptable. As a second rounder, it is unacceptable which is why I would call him a bust.

As for Kenny Clark hype. I just can't get on board with that. He doesn't win one vs one enough and he's not doubled enough to merit the praise. I don't think he's a blue chip player on the field. He is not consistent enough for that.

As for Rashan Gary. Only blue chipper on defense in my opinion. Jaire Alexander has dropped off.

The injured player, Walkers college teammate, was already being tended to, and having kind words being exchanged between the college teammates.

The extra trainer didn't have to put his hands on Walker, just like Walker didn't have to put his hands on the trainer.

And at least currently Wyatt, Wooden, nor Brooks seem to have the run defense you would prefer, leaving just Slaton and he's barely there.

It's okay to make mistakes. It's not okay to not learn from them.

All that said, he is absolutely fast and interesting to watch. I do think he can become a great zone coverage linebacker. He has a nasty streak to him which the defense has needed. I have hunch that coaches are pushing him to play that way, and that might be why he sometimes doesn't self regulate well in certain situations. I don't know if I am a fan of that. He has made baby steps, but a first-round pick needs to make significant strides. He hasn't made those yet. It's just year two, which is why I didn't call him bust. However, most Gutey picks tend to level out too soon and not emerge like a Rashan Gary has.

I think his 2021 season is an underrated one. Teams definitely focused on him. He absorbed blockers on a regular basis so De'Vondre Campbell could flow to the play more. Campbell doesn't make all-pro without Clark that season. In fact, most successful ILBs have a strong interior DL to thank. Clark also played a large number of snaps and did not miss a game. That kind durability and willingness to take on an unheralded role is why I'd call him a blue chipper.

I see Gutekunst scouted the Michigan/Penn State game yesterday.
No doubt in my mind he’ll be drafting JJ McCarthy as per my wishes.😁

I know nothing about JJ other than the box score brilliance lol

beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
