The Packers wanted to traded back into the 1st round to draft Christian Watson. They couldn't do it so they packaged their two 2nd rounders to move up to the 34th overall pick (2nd pick in 2nd round) and selected Christian Watson. Sure, Packers could have stayed and snagged WR Alec Pierce and RB James Cook, that is true. Instead, they got a stud WR they had a round one grade on.

It blew my mind how national pundits were shredding the Packers for not using one of the two 1st rounders on WR. I suppose they could have packaged 22nd and 28th overall to get as high as 8th overall. That would have left WR Garrett Wilson (10th), WR Chris Olave (11th), WR Jameson Willians (12th), WR Jahan Dotson (16th) or WR Treylon Burks (18th). Then the Packers wouldn't have LB Quay Walker or DT Devonte Wyatt.

If we play the what if game (hey, it's the BYE week, lay off) we can bounce around hypotheticals like this. Just a few of the plethora scenarios ...

A) LB Quay Walker, DT Devonte Wyatt, WR Christian Watson
B) WR Chris Olave, WR Alec Pierce, RB James Cook
C) WR Garrett Wilson, WR Alec Pierce, RB James Cook  (probably don't draft WR Romeo Doubs in 4th)
D) LB Quay Walker, DT Devonte Wyatt, WR Alec Pierce, RB James Cook

Honestly, I think A is good, and I would probably be OK with D as well. James Cook is a damn speedster.

ANYWAY! Watson landed with Packers and the last month has made it look like the future is bright!!

We have the whole hypothetical BS out of the way. Let's talk about the rise of Christian!

It is early. And I know I am excited to see what this kid can do for the Packers in the coming weeks, months and years!

What I like best about his game to game summary is how the number of targets has increased over the past 4 weeks.

As far as the "experts" bashing Gute for not taking a WR earlier in the draft, there is a vey good reason the talking heads are working for one of the various media outlets and not sitting in the War Room for one of the 32 NFL teams. What I find so funny is almost none of them recognize that fact that they are simply not good enough to be a part of one of the many NFL franchises.

Gute also signed veteran Sammy Watkins , leaving a lot if fans crying for a real veteran wr.
Sammy may have not put up the numbers expected, go back and watch the blocks he put down on both Watsons and Dillons td runs.
There is more to running routes when playing for The Packers.

Back to Watson, I'm really looking foward to watching a healthy Watson and Daubs together the final 4 games.

Took maybe one or two games longer to emerge, according to the official plan, but I'll take it. We would shoulda coulda won 2-3 more of these games. But I agree. The future is bright!

“If you’re a Packer fan you know the best part of that game? You have found a star in Christian Watson. You have got your number one. Doubs is also good but Christian Watson it does appear you have found a one. I’m not saying he’s Stefon Diggs or Justin Jefferson,Jamar Chase but you have found your one. So now that’s interesting to me. Now if Aaron has a little run here…maybe Aaron’s like you know what we found the one we got our guy. Now that you have got a number one back, now they’ve got a number one receiver, they got a number one corner, number one star quarterback.”

This brings up an interesting set of questions.  Is Watson truly a #1 WR? Is he potentially a very very good complentary #2? How do you define WR1? IE: is it the routes they run? The number of times they are targeted? The number of times the QB looks to them on key downs such as 3rd or 4th down?

In general I don't see the boundary WR who runs more deep routes as the #1.  In general it seems to me that their job is to draw off defenders and open the middle of the field for the real WR1. The deep route doesn't have to be the slant or go routes only to be a decoy. He could run a deep slant over the middle allowing the true 1 to come in after he has cleared it out.
Along this line, AR12 seems to like going to Cobb on 3rd down. He's more of a possession receiver.
Does a true WR1 get the most targets? If so Lazard is still holding that title even if CW has gotten more in the past month.

Watson is going to grow. Next year it's possible he could become the WR1. That also may end up being Doubs. As of now I think Doubs has been used in a wider variety of routes. In the long run they are a good complement to each other.

I believe we have a thread where we attempt to define what constitutes a WR1. Spoiler, no two people agreed.
