Union College senior Willie Williams led the South defense to a 27-0 victory over the North in the 2008 East Coast Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 29, in Petersburg, Va.

In the eight-year history of the bowl game, this is only the second time the South won. It was also the first shutout in East Coast Bowl history.

Williams (Miami, Fla.) led the South defensively with 12 total tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles.

"I knew I had to put everything out there on the line," said Williams of his performance.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound linebacker set the Bulldogs' single-season record for tackles with 150 while also recording 19.5 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks.

However, Williams was not pleased with his performance in Union's season-ending loss to the University of Saint Francis (Ind.).In the first round of the NAIA Football Championship Series, Williams was limited to six total tackles in the 55-3 loss.

"(Saint Francis) was a great team, and they played a great game," Williams said. "Going against guys from Division I and II, I knew I was going up against tougher competition (at the East Coast Bowl). So, I really wanted to show what I can do."

The game featured 68 of the best Division I-FCS, II, III and NAIA players from 33 different states. All revenue generated from this event is used to award a high school student who will attend a Division I-FCS, II, III or NAIA college with financial assistance.

I certainly don't agree with everthing Ted Thompson does or doesn't do, but overall I believe he does a very good job. There are certainly a lot worst GMs. For example I thought he gave up too much to get to draft Matthews. But I also thought Wolf gave up too much to get Favre. If this turns out that well I will be ecstatic.

Williams could be huge also if it works out, agreed. He must have turned himself around or I don't think Ted Thompson would have messed with him. When you get kicked out of Miami you have to be pretty bad.

I do find it curious that we are bringing in so many WRs when we just re-signed Ruvell Martin 10 days ago.

According to NEPatriotsDraft.com , the Packers have indeed signed Willie Williams, but apparently the Packers are known for being extremely tight-lipped about UDFAs until they have them under contract. So I'm guessing we'll have to wait a few days for confirmation.

Packers
WR Andy Brodell (Iowa)
RB Tyrell Sutton (Northwestern)
WR Kole Heckendorf (North Dakota State)
TE Carson Butler (Michigan)
WR Jaron Harris (SDSU)
DE Ron Talley (Delaware)
OL Evan Detrick-Smith (Idaho State)
WR Jamarko Simmons (Western Michigan)
OG Dario Nanni (Stillman Valley)
LB Willie Williams (Union College)
P Kurt Achter (UW-Oshkosh)

The thought of our defense with Raji, Matthews, Kampmann, Harris, Woodson, and Williams is SCARY.

You screen through the WR's and put the best of the best on your PS just in case your guys start going down during the season. It only takes a couple of injuries and you will be looking at that list to bring somebody up.

Kevin Greene is a beast

"gakko" wrote:

There is one major danger with Kevin Greene as a coach.

He is going to hurt someone on the sideline. I can almost see it now, one of our LB's makes a sack on a 3rd and 4, comes off the field, and gets completely flattened via a head-butt from Kevin, (helmet? he don't need no friggin' helmet anymore than Al Harris needs a friggin' spleen :thumbleft: )

He is not a mere position coach--- He's an intensity coach, and I can think of no one more qualified. I got dollars to donuts that the results will be instant and very recognizable. There will be no more back-peddling silliness on his watch.

Thanks for the slightly-more-official report, Mass! I think this signing (and draft) puts a kibosh to the idea that Ted Thompson is never willing to take risks. In terms of health, Harrell was definitely a risk; of course, it didn't pan out -- but not all gambles do. In terms of character, Woodson was once considered a risk, Raji could be considered a risk, Williams is DEFINITELY considered a risk. And yet here they are in Green Bay.

I personally don't think Willie will make the roster this year, but I think he'll be more than happy to occupy a spot on our practice squad for a year. I get the impression he will be ecstatically grateful someone took a chance on him. Grateful players are loyal players -- just what we want in Green Bay.

Wow.

If all of this is true (We got Willie)

There is a possibility he will evolve into the best player we got in 2009.

Really.

I contrast our "reach" for this kid as a UDFA (Huge reach--character-wise, ZERO reach, as in not even a 7th "flyer" eaten up on him.)

This kid is a MAJOR talent. He has also been a MAJOR thug, getting the heave from "THUG-U" (Coined in large part due to his single-handed thuggish-ness)

Vikes used a 1st rounder on a "character issue" guy. We lured a character guy into signing with us.

Practice squad maybe?

I really doubt it. This kid will be either a grand-slam home run or an out. I don't think there is an "in-between" for him.

We are talking 1st or 2nd round talent here, folks...really....imo

NO GANJA, WILLIE!

(Pack93z is going to conduct the research as our resident LB expert...He will come back with a woody----a prediction  )

I've watched Brodell play here at Iowa, and he makes plays happen. He's got that Donald Driver gene that says "If the ball is within 20 feet of me, I'm going to catch it." I'd love to see him make the team. He's got speed and great hands.

I would hope that Barbre can win that job. that would be excellent. I don't want him to get it by default. having players win their positions with a lineup of Barbre at RT, Sitton at RG, Spitz at C, Colledge at LG, and a healthy and effective Clifton (a stretch, i know) for one more year at LT would be nice. seeing one of our rookies or young players win the LT spot would also make for an interesting season.

Mosinee native Kole Heckendorf signs free-agent deal with Packers

By Tim Johnson Wausau Daily Herald April 27, 2009

Kole Heckendorf grew up rooting for the Green Bay Packers, now he has the opportunity to play for them.

The Mosinee native and former North Dakota State wideout agreed to a free-agent deal Sunday night after not being selected in the NFL Draft.

"It was a long day today, but couldn't have ended any better," Heckendorf said. "I always rooted for the Packers growing up and now I'm going to get a shot with Green Bay and we'll see what happens."

The Packers were one of four teams that made free-agent inquiries to Heckendorf before he made his decision.

"I talked to Houston, San Diego, Washington and more teams were calling and I had to tell them that I already signed. The Packers got on me right away. [img_r]http://www.bisonillustrated.com/articles/2008/11/images/kole2.jpg[/img_r]

"They're pretty deep at wideout, but they like to bring in guys that have a chance to make the team or practice squad," Heckendorf added. "I thought it was a good fit for me compared to a couple of the other teams, and I've always wanted to be a Packer."

Heckendorf and his family sat through a nerve-wracking second day of the draft, in which he received a call from Houston in the seventh round, but little else.

"I wasn't really expecting to get drafted, but thought I'd have a chance (in the late rounds)," Heckendorf said. "It was a long day seeing all the wideouts (getting picked), and you try and measure yourself against them. It was a little frustrating, but I'm just happy to get a chance and move forward."

Bison free safety Nick Schommer, a Prescott native, was selected by Tennessee in the seventh round.

"We're really good friends," Heckendorf said. "He's actually come out to Mosinee a couple of times and went fishing with me and my dad. He's probably one of my better friends on the team.

"He's my golfing partner in the summer and just a great kid. Hopefully he does really well out there."
