RE. Willie Williams, from kentucky.com (Lexington Herald-Leader):
"Union College linebacker Willie Williams, who also played at Louisville and Miami (Fla.), signed a free-agent contract with the Packers."

Thanks for the slightly-more-official report, Mass! I think this signing (and draft) puts a kibosh to the idea that Ted Thompson is never willing to take risks. In terms of health, Harrell was definitely a risk; of course, it didn't pan out -- but not all gambles do. In terms of character, Woodson was once considered a risk, Raji could be considered a risk, Williams is DEFINITELY considered a risk. And yet here they are in Green Bay.

I personally don't think Willie will make the roster this year, but I think he'll be more than happy to occupy a spot on our practice squad for a year. I get the impression he will be ecstatically grateful someone took a chance on him. Grateful players are loyal players -- just what we want in Green Bay.

Wow.

If all of this is true (We got Willie)

There is a possibility he will evolve into the best player we got in 2009.

Really.

I contrast our "reach" for this kid as a UDFA (Huge reach--character-wise, ZERO reach, as in not even a 7th "flyer" eaten up on him.)

This kid is a MAJOR talent. He has also been a MAJOR thug, getting the heave from "THUG-U" (Coined in large part due to his single-handed thuggish-ness)

Vikes used a 1st rounder on a "character issue" guy. We lured a character guy into signing with us.

Practice squad maybe?

I really doubt it. This kid will be either a grand-slam home run or an out. I don't think there is an "in-between" for him.

We are talking 1st or 2nd round talent here, folks...really....imo

NO GANJA, WILLIE!

I've watched Brodell play here at Iowa, and he makes plays happen. He's got that Donald Driver gene that says "If the ball is within 20 feet of me, I'm going to catch it." I'd love to see him make the team. He's got speed and great hands.

I bet they will hang onto a "big body" linebacker or 2 besides Kampman and I think Hunter will be one of them.

I would hope that Barbre can win that job. that would be excellent. I don't want him to get it by default. having players win their positions with a lineup of Barbre at RT, Sitton at RG, Spitz at C, Colledge at LG, and a healthy and effective Clifton (a stretch, i know) for one more year at LT would be nice. seeing one of our rookies or young players win the LT spot would also make for an interesting season.

Mosinee native Kole Heckendorf signs free-agent deal with Packers

By Tim Johnson Wausau Daily Herald April 27, 2009

Kole Heckendorf grew up rooting for the Green Bay Packers, now he has the opportunity to play for them.

The Mosinee native and former North Dakota State wideout agreed to a free-agent deal Sunday night after not being selected in the NFL Draft.

"It was a long day today, but couldn't have ended any better," Heckendorf said. "I always rooted for the Packers growing up and now I'm going to get a shot with Green Bay and we'll see what happens."

The Packers were one of four teams that made free-agent inquiries to Heckendorf before he made his decision.

"I talked to Houston, San Diego, Washington and more teams were calling and I had to tell them that I already signed. The Packers got on me right away. [img_r]http://www.bisonillustrated.com/articles/2008/11/images/kole2.jpg[/img_r]

"They're pretty deep at wideout, but they like to bring in guys that have a chance to make the team or practice squad," Heckendorf added. "I thought it was a good fit for me compared to a couple of the other teams, and I've always wanted to be a Packer."

Heckendorf and his family sat through a nerve-wracking second day of the draft, in which he received a call from Houston in the seventh round, but little else.

"I wasn't really expecting to get drafted, but thought I'd have a chance (in the late rounds)," Heckendorf said. "It was a long day seeing all the wideouts (getting picked), and you try and measure yourself against them. It was a little frustrating, but I'm just happy to get a chance and move forward."

Bison free safety Nick Schommer, a Prescott native, was selected by Tennessee in the seventh round.

"We're really good friends," Heckendorf said. "He's actually come out to Mosinee a couple of times and went fishing with me and my dad. He's probably one of my better friends on the team.

"He's my golfing partner in the summer and just a great kid. Hopefully he does really well out there."

Martha Careful (19h) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (19h) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Rude!
beast (23h) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
