I had a feeling this would be a pretty big topic. I try to look at this trade by the fact that Minny just improved their special teams with Percy Harvin, we know if Hestor is playing special teams Chicago is tough, why not get the best special teams guy in the draft? The kid obviously has work ethic which is never to be dismissed. Am I in love with the pick? No, but I do think it will fit a need and he can be a starter. I honestly think that Ted wanted to get rid of the Favre draft pick. Could you imagine being the kid that would forever be linked to Brett? Maybe Clay will be by extension, but it seems a bit more removed.

Not sure where we go in day 2, but I hope to see an OT or Guard, a running back drafted and that we draft Vaughn Martin from my Alumni the University of Western Ontario.

Let's not forget we scored 419 points last year and 435 the year before. The O is not the problem. Our problem is our D, specifically not being able to stop the run nor generate pressure.

Even thou I would of rather Ted have taken Sintim; I dont mind mattews - the problem arises in what Ted traded to get him. And ya it's said this draft was pretty poor with talent; and on the other side of the coin. Its up to the teams to find the talent amoungst what there is.

To me the greatest pick out of the whole off-season was dom capers ...
lets see what capers can do with our 2 new D 1st and 2nd rounders.

Totally agreed.

One of my biggest gripes last year was that our Defensive coaching staff failed to make defensive adjustments. They're almost all gone and replaced by people with serious brains. I can't wait for '09 to start. :thumbright:

Mel Kiper and Mooch on competing networks were asked who did they like on day one...Kiper and Mooch irrespective of each other...said the liked what Ted Thompson and the Packers did on day one of the draft...Not that Mooch or Kiper are experts or anything...wait a minute...YES THEY ARE!
Mooch and Kiper are the experts and we are Joe six packs...

Really...who are we...just...a bunch of folks who live and breath packer football...that doesn't make us experts...Kiper get paid the big bucks to be an expert...so...if the draft GURU likes what the packers did on day one...
Who the heck are we to gripe about it...we should be glad to have to first round picks...now...we will see if these picks pan out..it may be a year or two away...I say...hip hip hooray...two first rounders!!!

Some fans turn out to be right. Some wrong.

Remember, the experts/gurus/professionals picked Tony M*nd*r**h. The fans who said we should have picked Barry Sanders/Derrick Thomas/Deion Sanders looked pretty smart.

I don't buy only pros can be right. That's such a cop out. My God, grow a pair.

I'm proud of my brain. I don't need a professional to make every decision for me.

EDIT: For the record, I LOVE these first 2 picks. I was mad as hell at Ted Thompson last year and this year, he's done just about everything RIGHT.

amen to that!!

i actually was thinking it in a completely different tone...as in who the f's gonna care that they were the "brett favre pick" other than favre fans but yeah, you're right drivel - it woulda been a constant thorn in that guy's side.

4Pack - A lot of people would care. This is the guy we got for Brett Favre, perhaps the greatest football player of our generation (the two guys I'd compare him to would be Jerry Rice or Reggie White). It would be like trading Michael Jordan for a draft pick. Imagine being that draft pick.

I'm glad it's gone. That pick was cursed as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think this trade represents a change in TT's draft philosophy. I think it merely represents the next stage in his multi-year plan. He has stated before you stockpile picks to amass depth, but you don't stockpile picks indefinitely, because you get diminishing returns. He has hinted for weeks that he wasn't going to stockpile picks this year, but we were all too excited to listen closely.

As it is, all the haters who scoffed that Ted Thompson would trade out of the first round and we wouldn't have any early picks this year, they can suck a fat one. He proved them completely wrong. (Of course, now they're bitching that we didn't take enough picks this year -- such hypocrites.)

This team was so close last year. We had Super Bowl caliber offensive production, but our defense let us down so many times. Had we won all 7 of those games we lost by 4 or fewer points, we would have been 13-3. If we improve our defense only marginally this year, the Packers will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

I'm getting really excited.

Nice video. And look who is standing next to Mr. Matthews at 23 seconds in. Yeah ... the Pack love this guy.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I thought it was funny to see him slip on the turf and recover. Hopefully he will be one of the players who refuses to give up on a play even if he screws up at first. I hate watching players take themselves out of plays simply because they were out of position, instead of pursuing until the whistle blows.

1. I agree about the diminishing returns thing. Thus I'm stoked we got the two 1st rounders, and of those 2, both will immediately contribute on D.

2. Like it or not, there were good reasons for folks to be pissed at Ted Thompson in '08. I was. He had a lousy year, kind of equivalent to my fave player throwing 29 INTs.

3. Yes, our O was solid. That wasn't our problem. When opposing Os can run right up the middle over and over and over again, and when they finally get to 3rd down and throw the ball, the opposing QB has 5 seconds to look for an open receiver, something drastic had to be done. I'm soooo stoked about the 2 1st round picks to fix those problems.

4. So am I. We WILL have a winning record in '09.

TT got both of the guys he wanted. I think the move was a solid one. Matthews was the third star behind Rey and Cushing. Raji fills the NT position and Matthews can actually cover in pass coverage!!!!! Good picks

beast (8h) : Merry Christmas πŸŽ„πŸŽ
beast (16h) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (21h) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (23h) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I literally just said it.
