I feel we could of landed clay at #41..

I'm not trying to be negative but that's how I feel..

If you can't back up these feelings with data, I don't think any of us really care how you "feel." Unless you can give us some hard facts, all you're doing is speculating -- same as the rest of us -- and considering Ted Thompson was actually IN the war room with a ton more data handy than any of us could possibly have access to, don't you think he probably made an educated decision and did the best he could?

I, at least, am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

EDIT: I got up and read this post this morning and realized it sounds really harsh. It didn't seem that way to me at 2:30 a.m. I guess I shouldn't post in the wee hours. :blackeye:

Mel Kiper and Mooch on competing networks were asked who did they like on day one...Kiper and Mooch irrespective of each other...said the liked what Ted Thompson and the Packers did on day one of the draft...Not that Mooch or Kiper are experts or anything...wait a minute...YES THEY ARE!
Mooch and Kiper are the experts and we are Joe six packs...

Really...who are we...just...a bunch of folks who live and breath packer football...that doesn't make us experts...Kiper get paid the big bucks to be an expert...so...if the draft GURU likes what the packers did on day one...
Who the heck are we to gripe about it...we should be glad to have to first round picks...now...we will see if these picks pan out..it may be a year or two away...I say...hip hip hooray...two first rounders!!!

I agree!!! +1!!!
We got TWO first rounders in a weak draft, and the people that HATE Ted Thompson are wanting to run him out on a rail.
Wasn't just a few days ago, some were complaining how Ted Thompson gets a bunch of draft picks, HOARDS them, and most of the guys end up being cut. Wasn't THAT what we heard from those that hate TT????
Now, the guy takes some of those hoarded picks, trades up to nab someone they really think will flourish in our D (where we were REALLY bad last year) and they STILL bitch?
Some people won't be satisfied no matter WHAT the guy does.
If Ted Thompson gets us a Super Bowl win, they will still bitch. "Look at TT!!! He's getting his fingerprints all over the Super Bowl trophy! He should be FIRED!!!"
We have 2 first rounders, that hopefully will be a big impact right away this coming season. Heck, these 2 guys sure can't hurt!!!

Sintim was my 2nd OLB after orakpo (ya he's a tweener but he's a OLB in a 3-4). Sintim had the stats as a OLB. I was impressed with his sack amount and/starts and tackles for a loss.

Mattews
Year GP TKL TFL SACK PBU INT
2004 RS - - - - -
2005 11 8 0.0 0.0 1 0
2006 13 15 1.5 1.0 0 0

2008 13 56 9.0 4.5 2 0
Totals 50 96 13.5 5.5 4 0

Combine

Clay Matthews OLB Southern California 6-3 240 1 4.62 23 35 1/2 2.68 1.49 10'01" 4.18 6.90

Sintim

Ok my charts not the best here but you get the picture. Mattews has slightly better numbers at the combine via stats.

But in real live game situations ... Sintim wins hands down.

and then you throw in 2 3rd round picks you traded for mattews ...

The one thing that mattews has going for him is he is good at special teams. And thats one thing we need help with definately.

So obviously Ted Thompson wanted this guy and was willing to toss out our 3rd rounders for him.

I'll be comparing the 2 for the next few years to see how my pick would of worked out.

I like that comparison Dulak. I also liked Sintim alot.

There are two factors here though. One of them is the talent issue. Alot of people are talking about the play of USC players being inflated by the talent around them. When you have Cushing and Maualuga around you, it can also deflate your numbers. Especially if you're behind some decent D-line. Watching him play, he does look like the slightly better player. I do agree that it's only slightly though, maybe it's not enough to justify this trade, but that's just me.

The trade itsself really wasn't that bad imo. We kept stocking up on draft picks and it ended us up with the players people tend to remember like Jennings, Nelson and Collins (All 2nd rounders btw), but we also got players like Underwood, Hodge and Rouse. Nothing against those last there, they're solid, but they make up for the depth everyone wants. We have quite some.

Maybe it was time to get two players who can make an impact on defense. We're stocked up on linebackers, stocked up on safetys, stocked up on O-linemen. We could get another project, but that would leave us in a continuous 2-3 year progression cycle where we're waiting for players like Giacomini, Peprah and Rouse to become solid players.

The only thing I can say I'm upset about is the lack of FA activity, leaving us with no immidiate O-line help.

If they got your guy ... you go get your guy. I don't know about you guys ... but last I checked we just got an OLB that has the potential to be amazing ... we also got Raji and both of there positions we're needs in our team.

What if Kampman doesn't pan out in that position??? ... or 1 LB goes down ...

Anyways in 3-4 if your linebackers aren't good ... forget it you will suck.

Remember how on the 4-3 we use to switch around the DT's / DE's ... Keep them fresh on the field ... well now we've got LB's that will be fresh 75% of the time due to the talent level we've got there.

Key of success in 3-4 = LB's

Rock and Krazy,

I am glad we drafted a potential playmaker as a LB. And ya in the 3-4 the LBers are what make all the great plays. The Dline just take the heat (take up blockers and let the LBers do their job).

Obviously raji is the best DT in the draft. He should shine compared to what else was available and this will help our LB core.

-was going to say- ya we lost 2 3rd rounders and Ted has been so stingy with the FA. I'd like to see how Ted is going to repair the Oline ... and it needs repairing.

Interesting combination of analogies: Ball and chain AND thorn in the side. That's some serious suckage. 😃
