Well, this is good news. "@packers RB Aaron Jones on @gmfb @nflnetwork on whether the team is working on a new deal for him: "Yes they definitely are. My agent and them are taking care of that. I'm gonna focus on football."

I don't want to lose Jones, but I think the FA market is about to crash, especially the RB FA market, so I also don't know how smart it is to work out a deal now, vs waiting 6 months.

Also, need to be careful as every team that has paid RB huge contracts has seems to regret it the last couple of years as they don't continue to be as good as they were. Which could potentially happened to Jones. Though most of his injures have come when asking him to pass block, and this system asks less of that and more route running from him.

As much as I like Jones and as good as he is, I’m just not a fan of paying a running back 10 million plus a year.
Put me in the no column!

But in Lafeurs offense, paying a RB might make more sense. We'll see I suppose.

Also the Packers don't have a lot of 2021 cap room and their starting RB, LT, C, RG, TE, CB and return specialist are free agents. Now the returner, TE and RG might be cheaper, the C is probably gone, but we might not be able to keep starting LT, RB and CB.

And while I'm alright with moving on from King, I'm not that happy with their CB depth chart even with King. Basically we'd be putting ourselves in a corner to HAVE TO find a CB or two during the off-season, without much cap space and without much great veteran CB options. So basically gonna have to draft a CB high in the draft.

All depends on aj Dillon , if he steps up in his rookie season then Aaron Jones will have a hard time getting the big contract , but if Dillon doesn’t show much Aaron will get a boatload !!

They're already trying to pay Jones, so I think they get an agreement done, because the team is probably trying to work towards him, so I'm thinking he gets $12 million per year deal.

That or they go to FA, and Jones either gets a mega deal from some other team or comes back to the Packers for slightly less.

But if we don't get Jones, back up plans are Alvin Kamara and Dalvin Cook. Then Marlon Mack, Phillip Lindsay and Kenyan Drake... and then James Conner, Kareem Hunt, Chris Carson and Matt Breida.

Someone is going to get a really good deal in next year's FA RB market if hey wait, only downside is it might be a short term deal, but Broncos got Melvin Gordon for a cheaper two year deal than he turned down the year before. But I guess Packers really want their guy.... and depending on how you measure them, I think one could argue Jones and Kamara have been the best two so far.

Cook has to decide whether to assume the injury risk in 2020 for a base salary of only $1.3 million this year or to embrace the long-term security, even if it’s less money than what he wants and/or believes he deserves.

The Vikings don’t seem to be inclined to go beyond their strictly-business evaluation of the situation. The franchise tag has been dropping for the tailback position. If the cap is flat next year, the running back franchise tag is expected to be in the range of $9.4 million. If the cap drops to the minimum of $175 million, it would be $8.3 million.

So the Vikings can tag Cook twice and pay out, at a cap of $198.2 million next year, a total of $21.98 million over the next three seasons. At a cap of $175 million next year, that’s $19.56 million over the next three seasons. Regardless of what the Vikings think of Cook (and they think enough of him to make him a captain this year), the labor deal allows them to go year-to-year at a very affordable amount.

The article is about Dalvin Cook and the Vikings, but if you replace Cook's $1.3 million 2020 salary base with Aaron Jones' $2.1 million 2020 salary base (later round picks have incentive for playing time built into their contracts which Jones hit) then the same can be said.

So in theory (if these numbers are right, and I don't know if they're right or not, I'm theory), teams MiGHT be able to play hard ball and franchise tag a RB two years in a row for just about $20 or $10 million per year (for two years)

Or you can play nice with a RB who I'm sure are aiming at $13+ million per year, and if you're lucky, might get them to settle around $12.5 or if they're nice $12 million per year, for three to five years as I don't think they want to take less than Joe Mixon.

So is having a happy RB (which a locked in contract that you can't easily get out of), worth an extra $4 to $6 million? Maybe... but also have more years than that locked up too. If you think they'll going to stay healthy (which RBs have NOT been staying healthy and earnings those second contracts).

I think that extra amount might be worth it.

That being said, limited resources and I still might argue that money might be better spent going to upside the CBs or DTs. We might not have enough to resign CB King even if we wanted to... there MIGHT be a hole at CB now, and there will be if we lose another top CB.

They will sign Jones to an affordable 3 year $24 mil with a $10 mil signing bonus.
