Washington Redskins have decisions to make with four key free-agent starters:
...
Outside linebacker Preston Smith
Smith is due to hit the market after a perplexing first four years in the league. The 2015 second-round pick started every game the last three seasons and has 24½ career sacks, which ties him for No. 39 among players since 2015. There were high hopes this season with an improved defensive line in a contract year, but Smith’s four sacks were a career low. His 53 tackles, however, were a career high.
Smith is an ideal physical fit for a 3-4 outside linebacker at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds with good speed. But that ability hasn’t always translated to the box score.
Gruden would like to re-sign both Crowder and Smith and said, “They’re going to explode on the scene here very shortly.”
The Redskins do have Smith’s replacement already on the team in 2017 second-round pick Ryan Anderson, should they choose not to pay Smith.
“Just look at the numbers, it’s a roller coaster in terms of just pure numbers,” Davis said. “Up, down. Up, down. Does he still provide significant impact at times? Yes. At the same time, people keep waiting for that breakout to be consistent. That’ll be the question that people have"

Sacks are such a hard metric to determine if a pass rusher is doing a good job or not, because of all the variables that come into play. A guy like Fletcher Cox was number two this year in "pressure" according to PFF (sacks, hits and hurries on the QB), but 17th in sacks.

Preston has pretty much the same problem. His pressure-total has been going up consistently throughout the last three years, but his sack total has fluctuated. He was on 53 pressures this year. I don't know how exactly that stacks up against our guys, as I'm not a PFF subscriber, but I think 53 would be something around the 30th pass rusher in the league.

It's also just as much as our entire OLB-group had up to week 12, ranking 31st.

Again, his numbers aren't amazing, but he lookslike a servicable guy for someone to go along with your main rusher, as long as he comes at the right price.

Also Pettine loves versile edge rushers
as he uses them in different ways, such as using an edge rushers that has power and on a stunt can slide over and be used like an extra DT (which allegedly he is what he prefers) as a blitzer take the edge and they sometimes get a free rush with that stunt.

Or be able to drop back into coverage like Matthews and Fackrell did....

But I'm not sure how any of these guys can do the DT/coverage stuff...

Za'Darius Smith sounds like a pass rush specialist... and they didn't trust him in the run game for some reason... I'm thinking he is going to try to go to a 4-3 defense as sometimes those pass rush specialist can stay on the field more.

It's just that three things draw me to Smith.

First of all, the pressures. He put up the 17th most pressures out of all edge defenders. To me, that's the most important thing by far. If you can get home with 4 guys even semi-consistently, you'll always have enough guys back to play the run and pass.

Don't get me wrong, I like that Pettine's schemes are exotic and that he brings extra guys, but you shouldn't have to rely on that, just because your actual pass rushers absolutely suck.

Secondly, he's build like a 3-4 DE, but can play from the 3-4 OLB position. The guy is the same height as Kampman, but carries around another 10 pounds in weight. He relies on power more than finesse, as well. If you can't stop the run in that case, it feels more like a mental thing than physical limitation. Something that's coachable.

Thirdly... He just produces everywhere he goes. From starting every game at Kentucky, to being called the MVP at the Shrine Game, to having scouting reports rave about his work ethic, to becoming a force in the pass rush, while pretty much everyone wrote him off as a hands-down power end.

Pretty much in line with Smith, he won't carry your pass rush like a Mack, Ford or Von Miller will, but he'd instantly be the bust guy on our team and could work well in a good tandem, if he comes at the right price.

That's the main reason I think sacks are a bit over rated. Pressure is just as important. Granted, most of your guys getting lots of sacks also generate pressure but its the guy who gets the sack that gets the glory. The interior rusher who gets the sack because the outside rusher forces the the QB up into the pocket. The edge guy who get it because the push up front drives the QB out of the pocket. You get the picture.

It has also been brought up that in Pettines defense he doesn't rely on one or two guys to get the sacks, especially from the outside. Bring pressure from different sources throughout the game and the sacks will come. They may be spread out a bit more evenly but I don't care who gets them. It makes no difference to me if your defense gets 50 sacks on the year and one guy has 20 of them or none of your has double digits.

I guess the nice thing about a "sack master" if you will is that it forces the offense to account for him but the downside is if they figure out a way to neutralize him your defense really suffers. If they can't figure out where the pressure is going to come from they can't work around it.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want a 20 sack a year guy just that I don't think one is needed. On top of that a guy who gets you high teens in sacks for a few years is going to want a ton of money. If they don't get into double digits they may not command as much.

I don't know anything about Preston Smith other than what was posted here but he sounds like he may be an ideal candidate for Pettine's defense.

We got some new outside coaches, so looking at some of soon to be FAs that were on their teams.

SF 49ers (OL coach Adam Stenavich)
Michael Person G 31 SF
Alfred Morris RB 30 SF

Interesting as both of these guys used to start on teams the LaFleur coached on... Morris was drafted to the Redskins where he was quickly a star, but looks like his touches and yards have almost gone down every single year since joining the NFL... so I'm not sure how much he has left. Person has been a journeyman/stop gap OG, if you count repeat teams, 8 teams in 8 years 59 games played (less than 8 per year)... starting 14 games for LaFleur's 2015 Falcons team... and then starting no and getting released in the 2016 season that they went to the Super Bowl.... BUT Person started all 16 games last year for the 49ers and somehow got PFF 18th OG best grade, but maybe not a long term answer but could potential be a stop gap type guy that knows the type of schemes well.

Was. Redskins (LB coach Kirk Olivadotti)
Ty Nsekhe LT 33 WAS
HaHa Clinton-Dix FS 26 WAS
Pernell McPhee OLB 30 WAS
Preston Smith OLB 26 WAS
Adrian Peterson RB 34 WAS
Tony Bergstrom C 33 WAS
Zach Vigil OLB 28 WAS

Redskins have LOTS more... looks like they brought in a lot of guys one year deals due to injuries. I've heard it suggested Ty Nsekhe is one of the best back-up OTs in the NFL and maybe should be a starter someplace... the Redskins just have two OTs better... but the Redskins also have had one of the best OL coaches in football and built the Cowboys OL up too.

We're talked about about Preston Smith above. Our new LB coach was ILB coach on the Redskins, which is why I kept Zach Vigil in there... he started his rookie year off hot with the Dolphins, but injuries have slowed him down in recent years. Got some game action in 2017 but not much outside of that.

It may be true that FAs that have had an association with one of GB's coaches has an advantage toward being hired by the Packers, but I won't believe they are the only FAs that are being looked at. While I find reading this threads post most interesting, FAs like Kareem Hunt, Le'Veon Bell, Antonio Brown may be discussed, as giving a man a chance to start over is only fair. Other noteworthy players will also be FAs too. What TEs will be FAs? What Safeties will be FAs?

Let us expand this discussion to include all of the available FAs. 😉

Some sites like WalterFootball and others offer list of the best College and FA players according to position. When I find the time I'll examine a few. With months to go before any real changes in personal begin to take place, I'm not so eager to post any names anyway.

Also, the new Alliance of American Football mat just showcase a few players that GB and others may take an interest in. 😎

This is a pretty good list . Has ratings and a little write-up for every player, as well.

It is, like I said before, an ad-hell if you don't have an Ad-Blocker installed, though.

beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
