with two PRO-BOWL receivers, and a 1000 yard back, and a pass happy offense, rodgers had a decent statistical year. but when the team was down, and needed to come from behind to win, rodgers lacked confidence, looked like a deer in a set of headlights, and failed to take charge of his offense.

if you need my ip address to verify who i am, please let me know.

It is funny how you want to consider Jennings a Pro-Bowl receiver and then say that Rodgers had a "decent" statistical year.
Jennings was 6th out of all receivers.
Rodgers was top 5 out of QBs in many categories.

How is "rating" defined? By a consensus of subjective opinions? By statistics?

How does one measure deviation from this rating? And to what extent of variation should one consider a player 'overrated'? Lets take the case of Rodgers, since everyone loves to defend and attack him.

What I'm trying to say is, it's a loaded question because you're* going to get Rodgers detractors coming in here, posting a few sample statistics (generally of the # wins or 4th quarter comeback kind) to declare him "overrated". Well, if you're going to tell me that, then tell me the criteria from which Rodgers is being rated. Tell me if you're basing this rating on consensus or are we taking some select opinions, usually rather extreme hypotheses to counter. Tell me to what extent Rodgers had erred from consensus (or that 1 opinion) that you've decided that he warrants an 'overrating'. Tell me the emphasis you've applied to the complex set of variables (wins, TDs, yards, comebacks, injuries, moustache, speech, whatever) to determine the overall aberration.

If you can tell me all that, then you've convinced me that Rodgers is overrated. Because right now all I'm seeing from most people is a roundabout way of just declaring your likes or dislikes of players.

Leave it to the engineer to come in and start talking parameters, metrics and structure into the debate.

While inherently correct process in debate, the root question is abstract at heart and at best is based on individual perception an nothing more.

The beauty of sports... there is no definable concrete guideline to follow, thus making it infinitely debatable.

Statistics are mere fodder in the process.

I wouldn't consider Rodgers overrated just based on the fact that I doubt very many people thought he would end the season with over 4,000 yards and 30+ TDs. I bet if anyone made that prediction before the season started they had their head bitten off shortly afterward.

Of course there are those phantom fans that say Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL and hes going to be in the Hall of Fame for sure. For some reason their posts disappear at an alarming rate as does all proof that they even existed in the first place and only certain individuals can even remember these fans.

Here's my opinion on the Rodgers factor, if you will.

Firstly, I will rate Aaron Rodgers based on the notion that "Rodgers played well in 2008". This, I believe, is a common statement that many people will agree with. One can subtly change their argument in/against their favour by opposing the statement "Rodgers had a fantastic year" or "Rodgers did okay". Are these the consensus opinions? I don't think they are however.

I define 'playing well' as a combination of game performance (QB stats) and wins/losses and other game factors. However, I note that many players 'play well' without achieving victories (in high scoring shootout games, one of the QB still loses so does that mean he didn't play well?) and conversely, it often occurs that QBs will play poorly yet still deliver in the end (see Favre, first game of 2007). For this reason, I've decided to weight my opinion towards game statistics.

I will not relate Rodgers' 2008 statistics as I'm sure we're all aware of them. I will point out that Rodgers placed in the top 10 in many of these categories. This puts Rodgers in the top 1/3 of the QBs active in 2008. Based on QB statistics alone, I'd say Rodgers played great. However, he struggled with wins and some come backs. These do tarnish his performance for the first season, but I think the combination of Rodgers' great QB stats, coupled with his mediocre wins and comebacks, is close enough to warrant the rating of having 'played well' in 2008.

So no, in my opinion, Rodgers is not overrated.

Or in other words, I love me some Rodgers pornstache.

Wils but you bring up the Carolina game right? Didn't Rodgers throw an int in the final minute?.

i found that pretty funny that guy goes and writes a statement to support his argument, and forgets that rodgers came out and threw the int that ended the game. ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!

ROFLMAO!!!! I didn't realize a QB needed two comeback wins in one game. I don't fault him for trying for the homerun with only 1:30 left. Same with Brett during his career.

I didn't forget at all. I saw a situation where he drove the Packers for a winning score very late in the game (less than 2:00), only to see the defense give it up a TD with a freaking 27 second drive. I didn't see a deer in headlights there at all. If the defense stops them...wow notch on another close win. There should have been 3 this year. You guys see more faults with him than he deserves.

I don't consider Rodgers a top 5 QB yet. I don't consider him a pro bowler yet. I just see much more than you guys are blind to.

If anything Arod is underrated in my opinion.

Carolina Game: One of the best 2nd halves any Green Bay QB has had in a LONG time. Bringing up a last ditch INT is a joke.

Houston Game: late 4th quarter, 59 yard pass to Driver. Grant runs the ball insid the 5 only to get a phantom hold bringing the ball back followed by a sack robbing the Pack of a sure win.

Chicago: LATE 4th quarter, CLUTCH 3rd down nine yard completion to Jones when out of FG range. Three plays later from the 20 freaking yrd line the FG is blocked.

Minnesota: LATE 4th quarter, Big time throw to Driver down the middle for 19, two runs and short pass completion and Crosby misses the FG.

This was crunch time stuff when the team needed it. We should have won these games then and there. When it was time he delivered and if you look at how we lost the ball was not in his hands.

What I look for is what does the guy do when it's REALLY on the line and not after that when your in a hopeless position deep in your own territory and the team has already blown the chance to win.

This guy is cool with three, four minutes to go, doesn't panic, and puts the ball where it needs to be, and we will win a lot of Football games with him as long as the rest of the team doesn't fall apart around him.

I hope Rodgers doesn't take this approach otherwise GB could be in big trouble. Rodgers is in to much of a hurry with two minutes left. He needs to first realize that two minutes is along time. He hasn't' done that in a game yet. His picks have constantly come with plenty of time left on the clock.

The Minnesota game saw Rodgers throw a pass that was deflected into Driver's hands. In other words it was lucky. None the less, Rodgers also couldn't drive the team more than that. A 53 yard kick is not an easy task. Actually, Rodgers played just an awful game too. That was by far the worse of his one year career so far.

There was also still time in the Carolina game. The pick came with time left on the clock. It wasn't a last ditch effort, although I agree that he was outstanding in the second half and I really think Rodgers played as good as a game as he played all year.

He threw a poor pick against Atlanta. Another one against Jacksonville.

The Chicago game wasn't much better. James Jones made a great catch and kind of bailed him out. Sometimes that happens though and Crosby should have made that kick.

This isn't bashing, but it's constructive criticism and something Rodgers needs to improve.
