PIB - I highly doubt that the people in here that have a Ted axe to grind even realize that he answers to the board of directors and that they set forth his agenda.

"Zero2Cool" wrote:

If that's true, why did Sherman get fired? I mean, if Sherman was just a puppet, why can him? Heck, if the board of directors handles the football operations, why did Bob Harlan lie to us when he said they don't have any say in the football decisions?

Sherman got fired for coaching a 4-12 team, comprised of his players less Wahle, Rivera, and Darlene. The reason those three had to go was because Sherman himself as GM/head coach put the team in cap hell. Thusly, when the board of directors hired Ted Thompson and stripped Sherman of his GM duties (which quite frankly, he failed miserably at) they instructed Ted Thompson to get control of the cap, and rebuild, much to the dismay of many spoiled Packer fans.

I think Sherman was treated fairly because they gave him an unnecessary contract extension and greased him a little.

As for Harlan, I can't answer that, but is it logical to you that Ted Thompson has all the say in what goes on at 1265 Lombardi Ave? If so we should call him King Ted.

So ok who the hell is right here? If the board decides who we sign then why do you praise TT? Also why do we even have TT, Isn't that like a waste of money to pay for someone that don't do anything? If Ted Thompson is in charge of the team then his head should be on the line. But then again look at how young Detroit was for a few years with Matt Millen, we could always have that happen to us.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I think that most everyone here would agree that they want us to be like the Steelers. They make the playoffs more often than not, and they've won more [strike]championships[/strike] Super Bowls than any other franchise.

Look at what defines the Steelers' FO. Continuity of management, combined with a penchant for watching their own stars walk. And sticking to the sidelines during Free Agency periods. This makes for boring offseasons, but they've run their show like this for a looooong time. And I'm sure that fans over there get frustrated.

I believe that the board is aiming for something similar to their success, and this is the method they will abide by. Build through the draft. Only sign FA's if they're a relative bargain. Pay your QB once you've found him. If a player wants a blockbuster deal, let him walk, no matter what position he plays.

I would love for the Packers as an organization to be more like the Steelers or the Patriots, yes.

But both of those teams have also made moves in FA when the situation called for them to do so. Sometimes big moves, and sometimes moves that have yet to pay big dividends, even (see: Adalius Thomas).

Do either of those organizations go hog wild in FA on a regular or knee-jerk basis? No. Do they spend the money in FA when it makes sense for what they're trying to accomplish? I would argue that yes, they do.

My ONLY complaint - and it's not a complaint, even, I'm just spitballing because it's the offseason and I'm antsy - is that I'm not seeing him move in an offseason where such movement would seem to be a good idea. We have lost guys who contributed, and we've gained one safety.

On the other hand, Ted did pay Woody a fair wad of cash when we needed a shutdown corner, so it ain't like he can't do it. I'm just hoping his grande scheme works out this year.

""1 receiver goes down first week of season"
Most all other WR's & TE's were injured for parts of the year.

#1,2,3,4 & 5 RB's all get hurt.
TT's replacement o-lineman are all gone within 2 seasons and never did perform to a working level.

Mike Sherman got fired because it was time for a change.

Not to mention the fact that he was almost forced to use his 1st 2 draft picks on Db's, because 1 M. MacKenzie was imitating T.O. before T.O!!!!

The mid-90's experiment of GM/HC failed miserably throughout the NFL.

Go ask M. Holmgren about that.

What I could never understand was the fact that Ted Thompson gave MS a 2 year extension on his contract and then turned around and fired him.

That just cost The Packers more money.
Ted Thompson seemed to have the team heading in the right direction, but the inability to keep guys in Green Bay(losing them in Fa's), along with some questionable player moves has cost him some support.

This is year 5, time to start putting up more wins than losses.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

We all realistically know the Ted is not some bum of a GM, but is far from flawless in his job to date as well.

There is plenty of facts to put together a solid argument for both his pros and cons as a GM, without emotion most can logically see that.

So it comes down to which side of the coin has he brought more, and that is a contentious topic with varying perspectives aplenty. It is subjective to your own perspective and judgment on some tough moves, which in reality can't be proven beyond a reasonable doubt with fact.. so it leaves it ambiguous in nature..

That always will lead to heated debates and contention..

And it always will, that is just the pure facts of topics of this nature...

But it doesn't mean that we have to resort to flinging insults and labels back and forth between members.. use some common courtesy and disagree with the point of view, but at least respect it.

If it grows tiresome to you, ignore it and move forward.

We are all fans of this franchise.. just some have a different view of where we are at or where we are heading.. simple as that.

In conclusion, please disagree and debate with a view that you don't share.. but please do it with respect to your fellow poster.

+1. Very well said.

I've tried to evaluate fairly. I think Ted Thompson has done a spectacular job with inheriting a team in cap hell and fixing it. This alone gets double or triple kudos.

But he loses some kudos by failing to rebuild both lines. Also loses a kudo or two for failing to close some deals (I think we all know which ones I'm referring to and don't want to open up a new can of worms). Gets big kudos for Charles Woodson, Greg Jennings, etc. Loses kudos for Bustin.

So yeah, you're right. He's very hit or miss, and this is why people fight over him so much. He's done some splendid things while completely failing in other areas.

He's clearly no Matt Millen, but he's not the Patriots nor the Steelers either. He's somewhere in between, and this is where the fight begins - if he's closer to the Steelers or Patriots guys or Matt Millen.

Dakota - On paper, that sounds great.

Here's the problem with that though - a lot of Ted Thompson lovers see ANY criticism as bashing. I've given Ted Thompson both a lot of praise and a lot of scorn. There were things I was absolutely stoked for (fixing our cap hell, Woody, Gregorious, AR, etc.) and things that I was really pissed at him for (both of our lines, Bustin, failing to close the deal with Moss, etc).

Now, whenever you give Ted Thompson credit, you become a Ted Thompson lover to the haters. When you criticize TT, you're a hater to the lovers. If you're fair, you can't win. 😞

Apparently it really is that hard to accept that DH is a hardcore anti Ted believer and the majority of the forum is able to see both the good things Ted has accomplished here and some of the shortcomings of this team and try to talk sensibly to them.

I fail to understand both the hardcore Ted haters and those that take offense to the slightest bit of criticism towards the man.. he is man isn't he.

But I will agree that overall the entire freaking theme of debating the job Ted has done becomes tiresome and repugnant.
