So we will have a younger version of TT. Why couldn't we get someone that thinks outside the lines. Oh well we will get to see how his drafting is because we will be getting alot of high picks in the near future i feel. I still say trade Aaron Rodgers to cleveland for their 2 #1s in the draft and then sign someone like Alex Smith to groom a new qb for a couple years. We wont be in a super bowl in the next few years so lets build a nice solid team

Who from the Green Bay Packers came forward and made an official announcement on a new GB GM ? When was that media announcement made ?

Nothing is "official" until it is official !!!

I hope Gutekunst leans on Mike McCarthy to look outside the organization for a DC.

If the Bears don't hire Fangio as their head coach (and it's said they're mainly looking for an offensive head coach for their young QB), then I think (just personal opinion that) Fangio might be the leading candidate.

Teryl Austin will only be interviewed after he gets released (if he gets released), but first the Lions have to figure out who their head coach will be. Also he could be going to Bengals.

So we will have a younger version of TT. Why couldn't we get someone that thinks outside the lines.

Built the team first and add the QB last seems to work great for some teams (including the Vikings), as it keeps you picking low until you get the QB... then playoffs and high selections time.

Packers hit 'home run' with Brian Gutekunst as GM, but questions linger
4:28 PM ET
Rob Demovsky
ESPN Staff Writer

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Here’s how one highly placed source at Lambeau Field handicapped the Green Bay Packers' general manager race: “John Schneider would be a grand slam, but Brian Gutekunst would be a home run.”

Short of luring Schneider out of Seattle, the hiring of Gutekunst, the team's director of player personnel since 2016, might have been the best-case scenario to both keep continuity and rebuild the Packers after a drop-off in the talent level that was exposed this season when Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone.

UserPostedImage
Promoting Brian Gutekunst to GM should give Packers coach Mike McCarthy a partner in both roster-building and answering front-facing questions about personnel decisions.

The Packers are expected to introduce the 44-year-old Gutekunst as their new GM on Monday. The Packers announced Tuesday that Ted Thompson would no longer be in charge of the team's personnel department but would remain senior adviser to football operations.

Among internal candidates, Gutekunst offered the best combination of scouting experience -- both on the pro and college side -- and people skills. This should offer coach Mike McCarthy the kind of pairing he’s looking for: a partner in roster building and the front-facing parts of the job.

Rob Demovsky wrote:

A home run, eh? I wonder who the grand slam would have been?

It sounds like the Packers organization was looking for a frontman who could actually speak with the media. In other words, someone whose personality was the antithesis of Ted "Cadaverous" Thompson's. That makes sense to me from a public relations and business standpoint. How it will translate to success on the field remains to be seen.

I stand corrected on the Whaley issue.

Now the question tickling my brain is this: With the Packers having promoted from within, can we safely assume that Mike McCarthy's job is safe for now? Or is there still a chance that the new sheriff in town might want a deputy of his own in the saddle?

From the candidates inside 1265 I had hoped for Gutekunst even though I don't know enough about him to really have a solid opinion. He seems to have a good blend of experience and is knowledgeable in player evaluations.

Wolf is very knowledgeable but a little too young. He reminds me of Jag's Jeff Carson in draft Day. He has some ability but needs a few more years seasoning.

According to some experts Ball was the choice. I was sure Murphy with his MBA would go the money route and take him based solely on the dollars end of the operation.

No one outside of the inner circle seemed very likely to me.

I know Favre didn't like the selection. I can see how Sherman would probably have preferred a big ol fatty for the DL but I was ecstatic that some guy who was thought to be a #1 pick fell that far and in 3-4 years when we needed him, he would be about ready to take over. The retirement/never mind dance had already begun and was already irritating. I assumed Brett just didn't want to go through all of the OTA's and early TC.

Happy that they stayed within the Ron Wolf Tree and hired a football guy. Hoping to an aggressive approach to player acquisition along with Ted Thompson’s eye for draft talent ala 2005-14.

Wpr I wonder what Rodgers would think if one of the top qbs fell to us this year and we picked them? I can see the sequel of the Farve divorce coming. Rodgers already wants to help pick the free agents they sign.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Random tidbit from Aaron Nagler ... Eliot Wolf hired Brian Gutekunst.

A few people have said one thing that Brian has going for him is no one seems to say anything negative about him or is opposed to working with or below him. That has to bode well, I hope! haha

1. Is the "Top QB" projected by anyone to be #1 overall?
2. Is Aaron talking retirement every preseason?
3. Does Aaron have 3 years left? In 2005 it sure seemed like that's all Brett had left.
4. Favre didn't have to push for FAs. Wolf game them all they needed.
