I felt like Silverstein was just picking the least talked about and bringing them up especially since he's currently Vince president of football operations.

Personality I dislike the idea of Ball as GM, simply from the standpoint he's been introduced to us as a money and contract guy and from what I've seen, those money and contract guys often seem to fail badly.

Though recent articles have suggested that really Ball is a jack of all trades. And has done a bit of it all. That being said, he was still introduced to us as a money and contract guy for the longest time.

Here's a nice write up on Russ Ball. It might help you freak out less if he becomes GM.

How do you know this?

Mike McCarthy haters are screwed, too. Mike was instrumental in Ball getting his job here after Brandt left in a huff because of Murphy’s hire. Unless an outsider wows Murphy, I expect Ball will be the guy and Mike will get a 5 year, maybe an lifetime 😂, extension soon. Ball, Ted and Mike worked together like Forrest and Jenny/Peas and carrots. I couldn’t understand why Mike signed a 1 year deal; it made no sense. He had 1265 over the barrel and his agent is probably in an institution on meds in a straightjacket due to Mike’s refusal to take advantage. Now it makes sense; Mike is committed to GB expecting Ball to be the GM.

A few years ago, when the Ted retirement talk started and occasionally you’d hear Russ Ball, it caught my attention because it made no freaking sense at all. To me it was like an announcement that Rodgers is being considered to play Cornerback next year.

So, I paid attention. And you heard Ball’s name more and more. The guy has experience in 3 other front offices and 4 organizations and 3 leagues. His older brother [KC’s Randy Ball] was a longtime college coach and has experience in 4 different leagues [NFL, AA, UFL, UNG] and is Pro Scouting Assistant there. Ball negotiates all the GB contracts, not Ted. Ted was not aloof, he’s just shy. Ball has got major personality.

Under Murphy, GB is the best run organization if football and there isn’t another that is close. Only one team has come close to matching its success [NE- and if we were in Boston and they in GB, you’d think of them like the Bills and with Rodgers’ and Favre’s egos would be checked by Boston’s fan base we’d have 5 SB wins]. The guy running this entire show is Ball ad he’s doing it while being the best at negotiating contracts and managing the cap.

To answer your question directly. I’ve never spoken to Ball, but spoke to a handful that have and short of doing a Vulcan mind probe not sure how else to answer; but above are a few new things about him you may not be able to read about. When a guy is picked for a bigtime job appearing to lack typical qualifications, it’s usually because characteristics of organization, logic, leadership, personality, etc, are considered exceptional by ALL that had interaction with him. And consider how GB couldn’t even play a game unless they had a Ball.

Someone made a reference to the hospital being run by a surgeon... The GM has to "perform surgery." I want a superior talent evaluator running the show, someone who could do this on his own, this is a big part of their job. Wolf could. Ted could...What evidence do we have that Ball has any background in this?

THE QUESTION IS WHY! Evolved [not necessarily better] thinking was presented on this issue and this counters none of that!

Let’s try again. Let’s just talk the college draft here:

Info comes for a million places about THOUSANDS of college players. A GM has to contort this info into a draft board that ranks EACH player [GB into tiers]. Organizational skills are FAR MORE IMPORTANT than knowledge of scouting for this task. A great scout without great organization skills will FAIL.

The players are adjusted, moved in and out of various tiers, as the GM receives input from EVERY SINGLE SCOUT and OTHER PERSONEL GUYS. This is what, 15-20-30 guys [don’t forget they use some outside scouting services]? What’s more important: the input of one more guy [the GM] or the ability to listen and process info from 30 other people with an open mind? Ted no doubt had opinions about several players, some, no doubt, very strong. Ball’s opinions won’t be nearly as entrenched as Ted’s. Ball will absorb the info from these 30 other people like a sponge and the pure info will be less likely to be corrupted by Ball’s preconceived notions about the player’s skills.

Justin Harrell was the only puzzling pick I've seen Ted make. Did Ted use the unbiased raw consensus of the other 30 or so guys with input?

I could go on, but tell me WHY the GM MUST be a great talent evaluator! The above lays out an argument that a GM super scout is a DISADVANTAGE based on how egoless that GM is. I think Ted is as egoless as any GM can be. Most GMs like Dorsey and Schneider have HUGE egos, I’m certain Ball would be better than those to at GM, even though a lesser talent evaluator.

And this assumes Ball isn’t a great evaluator, he might be. As infants we were all as good as Ted in scouting, a great learner could be a great evaluator in 5-6 years.

Barfarn - all you've done is made a case for why an excel spreadsheet would make a great GM.

You're giving him credit for rudimentary skills that apply to this or many jobs. He needs to organize scouting input - of course. Again, an excel spreadsheet can do this. An air traffic controller needs to be organized too, should we hire someone from Austin Straubel International?

He's creating the tiers based on his intuition and reports from the regional scouts. He's pulling the trigger on draft day. You need experience in evaluating. Show me a report he has experience in this. Even in the article Zero just sent, Cohen acknowledges in the video that Ball is not the guy if you're looking for someone with personnel experience.

For all we know, he could do a hell of a job, and Brian and Eliot are horrible evaluators. None of us truly know what happens behind 1265...that said, the resume doesn't ooze the credentials I'd want to see in a GM.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

Elliot ain’t going anywhere. Especially not if he’s smart. Dude is what, 31 years old? Have some patience, kid. Sit and watch, learn how it’s done from the master.

I kind of like the idea of Ted “doing his thing” and Ball doing the rest, which is to say, interacting with the media and looking at free agents. This is a “best of both worlds” scenario. Assuming it works out.
