The Packers’ former director of football operations has become the general manager of the Browns. On the same day the Cleveland Browns  fired their de facto general manager, they hired former Green Bay Packers  personnel executive John Dorsey to replace him.
“We are thrilled to have John Dorsey lead our football operations,” Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said in a team statement. “John has been immersed in the NFL for 26 years, won two Super Bowls, built sustainable winning football teams and is highly respected for his football acumen. We know we have a critical and very positive opportunity ahead of us to profoundly impact the foundation of this football team.”
Dorsey spent more than two decades in the Packers organization, earning rings for the team’s victories in Super Bowls XXXI and XLV. He left in 2013 to become the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs , building the franchise into a consistent AFC power. Under his management, the Chiefs amassed a record of 43-21.
However, the Chiefs fired Dorsey unexpected earlier in 2017, leaving one of the NFL’s most respected talent evaluators on the open market. This created speculation that he might eventually return to Green Bay and take over for his former boss Ted Thompson upon retirement.
However, it remains unclear when Thompson plans to retire. His current contract runs through the 2019 NFL Draft, though he could sign an extension to remain in Green Bay. Packer president Mark Murphy has supported Thompson publicly, suggesting the general manager will remain in his role as long as he likes.
The Packers have several personnel executives that could eventually replace Thompson. Eliot Wolf, the 35-year-old son of Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf, has garnered considerable interest from other teams and has received several promotions and raises over the years to keep him from leaving. Alonzo Highsmith , Brian Gutekunst, and others within the organization have also interviewed for GM positions.
