Very interesting to see come up with some new creative category for the roles that players fall in within certain positions, instead of simply just their position.

Example which category do the DBs fall within of these categories
Sentinels, Badgers, Rangers, Robbers, Enforcers

I think Tex put a couple of players in wrong categories but it's an interesting article for those that like creative categories in which to label players with.

Is Ty Montgomery a Rook or a Bishop? Is Kenny Clark a Dragoon or an Anchor? See what we mean by these questions inside. On Monday morning, Danny Kelly of The Ringer published an interesting look at the way positions are named in the NFL . Specifically, he argues that it’s time to completely revolutionize position names to reflect the league’s trends and players’ specific roles.

Evan "Tex" Western  wrote:

I do strongly believe in the past the NFL has over simplified positions which lead to a lot of confusion by fans... such as 3-4 DE vs a 4-3 DE being completely different positions... as 3-4 DE was much more like an interior DL and 4-3 DE much more like an edge rusher... same with OLB position.

If fans can't figure out DE's or OLB's they are never going to understand a naming system like that.

Heck do we even know all the Packers labels for all the positions? Like they call the nickel CB position "star", but what do they call the outside CB position?

These are just different topics to talk about, what I haven't seen around... what are things labeled, and what should they be labeled instead.

Like I believe 4-3 DEs and 3-4 OLB should simply be labeled "edge rushers" or "ER" position because their functions are a lot alike... and they're a lot closer to each other than the 3-4 DE or 4-3 OLB are to them.

It's a good topic beast. I was thinking of posting it this morning but I got busy.

It can be entertaining to get new names for the positions but as it was pointed out it won't make it easier for the average fan to grasp.

One of the first comments at that site I read summed it up pretty well.
In a nutshell: In long line of dumb articles recently this is near the head of the pack.

It is why we were not surprised when Kampmann moved on, because he was a 4-3 DE not a 3-4 OLB. Clay couldn't play DE in a 4-3 either.

No need to make anything more difficult than it needs to be.

4-3 DEs and 3-4 OLB are very close to being the exact same thing in today's game... 4-3 DEs don't drop into coverage much, but neither do moderation day 3-4 OLB... in a large part to the fact the 3-4 OLBers are more often in 2-4 sub packages where the OLB lines up across from the OT just like the 4-3 DE... they're very close to being the same thing in the current game. And Matthews has been playing a lot of 4-2 DE (opps I mean 2-4 OLB, because there is somehow a difference) the last couple of years...

It's not more difficult to correctly call things as they are... it's simpler... that way you don't have to decode them later because the codes are confusing and easy for people to get mixed up.

A 3-4 DE is an interior DL
A 4-3 DE is an edge rusher
A 3-4 OLB is an edge rusher
A 4-3 OLB is a traditional LB

The DE/OLB labels being used in multiple ways is more difficult and confusing to people than simply calling the edge rushers the edge rushers.

Let's see....renaming positions....how about , instead of "quarterback", we change it to "da guy dat trows da ball" and "wide receiver" to "da guy dat catches da ball".?

beast (8-Jan) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (8-Jan) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (8-Jan) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game

Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
