No...we have been rebuilding the carnage left by MS. It is fiscally unsound to go out and blow our wad on over-priced FAs who, as the record shows, typically never live up to their contracts, and cause the loss of several young players who will earn an upgrade in the next few years.

Which young players are you wishing to scuttle for some big name who will not live up to the hype, or contract.

Jennings, Collins, Williams, Spitz, Bishop (who I think will be a star in this new defense)...who are you willing to lose for an overpaid FA?

Absolute classic post... dead on money for the most part.

The only area we really need a direct influx of talent that might be inflated in price would be dline.. and not at 17.25 guaranteed for a guy that is solid in the run game but very average in pass rush. But I give him versatile in alignment.

We are short on bodies along the Dline and even a bias draft might not give us enough to work with and maintain value in the picks.

I'd lose Spitz for Canty in a heartbeat, but as Washington proved this week you don't' need 35 million in cap space to sign guys. People act as if one risk that goes wrong is going to cost the team Nick Collins or Greg Jennings.

It wouldn't. Several risks would.

Mike Sherman didn't give one bad contract. He gave several and that's what lead to the cap situation in 05. Ted Thompson hasn't given one bad contract. Marquand Manuel's was cheap enough to where it has little effect. Bubba Franks isn't costing the team that much either. Even Aaron Rodgers' deal doesn't compare to some of them going out right now.

Saying 17.25 in guarantees is risky is true, but saying it's a potential nightmare to the teams cap room is just not true. Implying losing Jennings or Collins is a nightmare by the way. Not unless you go on a spending spree would you risk losing certain players and I don't think any reasonable person is asking that.

The fact is GB has enough room to extend Greg Jennings, Nick Collins, and Aaron Kampman while actually signing one big and bold free agent such as Canty or maybe even Igor whom may get a deal bigger than Colin Cole's.

It's not about the money with Green Bay, it's about the philosophy and they don't agree with the current status of the NFL. Not this regime.

Face it, Canty's agent wanted a number to shop the Giants with.. nothing more.. there is no way to explain it other than that.. they weren't willing to wait a day and visit here.. yes the money moves fast in FA, but not that fast. Ted wasn't going to be played, in this case I completely agree with his approach.. The player has got to be at least willing to make a visit and go through the motions of getting to know each other. See the TJ Whosyourmomma deal.. all the teams waited for him to make his mind up.. no one dropped their offer in the process..

There is the trickle down effect that you are missing I think.. say we went out blindly like Canty's agent wanted and threw out a number that was in the ballpark (BTW it probably would have needed to exceed the Giants deal) and we got him here and signed him for 17 mill or better in guaranteed coin.

What does a player like Jenkins say when that deal far out weighs the one he got for a proven commodity?

How about Kampman, whom to date is playing the good soldier about moving spots?

Now I agree with your statement that one overpriced deal isn't going to kill the cap.. but we already have handed an overpriced deal out to Rodgers.. and probably one to Jennings, Collins and Kampman if he can make the transition..

So there is more depth to it than making one overpriced splash into the free agent pool.. namely future dealings with your own players on contracts..

First I'm not asking for five free agents. I think you specifically are misinterpreting what I'm getting at. I think two and I'd be content with one. I think GB needs one starter via defensive side of the ball and one offensive lineman to start. They need a starter. I am not content with Daryn Colledge at RT.

Rodgers, Jennings, Collins, and Kampman are Pro Bowl players and key core guys from your team. In the case of Rodgers, quarterbacks are always going to be paid. I wouldn't call him overpaid and I don't think the other three will be overpaid either unless they hit the open market which I think is unlikely due to the uncapped season coming up.

What Sherman did was overpay for unproven guys with potential such as Robert Ferguson and Cledius Hunt. There is a difference.

The problem with the Chris Canty thing isn't the money it's the fact that Thompson couldn't get on the phone with his agent and at least set some parameters.

Canty's agent couldn't bargain with the Giants because the Packers wouldn't give out numbers and GB probably didn't want to be used either. That's the nature of the business and perhaps the Packers shouldn't worry about being used and do some using of their own so to speak.

The Packers could have told Canty they'd surpass the Giants offer, but they need a physical first. If Canty doesn't sign then so what you made your offer, but if he comes to GB and fails the physical then all bets are off. If he passes then you get your guy.

To me this current regime doesn't know what free agency is all about in today's NFL. My guess is they felt Chris Canty wouldn't be as expensive as they did and when they found out they backed off. I think they'll back off on Igor as well when they get his asking price and they'll settle for a Kendrick Allen type guy who will seldom play.

They absolutely refuse to take chances and it's a problem. It wasn't when you're rebuilding. I get rebuilding via the draft, but sooner or later you need something to put your team over the top. How long is this team going rebuild through the draft?

Ron Wolf built his teams' through the draft, but he went into free agency and gave his teams that extra "boost" that took them from a 9 to 11 win team to a 11 to 13 win team.

Right now GB is about a 7 to 9 win team in my opinion.

Porky, hell yes I want a start added on both lines, but I am okay with them waiting for the market to settle just a little. Let the players start to get a little nervous that the money isn't being handed out freely like they stole it.

I think we are missing each others points here... we need some talent added to this club, I won't for a second disagree. If we go into the draft with this many holes along the lines, then we have big time issues that will skew the way we run this draft.

This draft has the right mix of talent for us long term, deep at OT and Dline.. but we can't go into it like a Mike Sherman thinking of draft on position over and over hoping he hits on one or two..

But the money that Canty got was a little to steep and even if we wanted to overpay that wasn't in the cards IMO. Canty wanted to stay on the east coast... and he did.

There are options left out there in FA... the shelves aren't as bear as some are making it out to be.. there are players that could help this club available or that will become available.

Now I agree, the manner in which Ted is approaching FA is too much on the plodding side and not enough on the aggressive action side, but did you really think his MO would change.

I refuse to judge this offseason until the complete body of work has been completed.. not a couple of frenzy days at the beginning of the season.. the one that strikes first doesn't always strike best.

Ron Wolf will also tell you the risk was no where near as great when he went after free agents..He had even said it in public how it was far easier back then it is now

I just found that out recently and now I really hate that Ron Wolf argument
that he did it..

Packers Looking for D-Line Help

After the Packers couldnt get defensive end Chris Canty out of New York to visit Green Bay, then watched as defensive tackle Colin Cole signed with the Seahawks, I think its time for them to make some sort of move soon. Green Bay needs some depth along the defensive line, which is crucial to the success of any defense. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers are interested in free agent defensive end Igor Olshansky of the Chargers. Not sure if theyll indeed make a play for Olshanskys services, but if they want their new defense under Dom Capers to work, they need to fill some holes along the defensive line at the right price. Green Bay usually doesnt overpay for marginal talent.

seriously i think he is a good GM though. take away free agency these past two years and he has been great. drafts are fantastic. harrell the only downside to that.

The game is different, but you have to be able to utilize everything to win. That much is the same. Wolf did that and Thompson so far hasn't for the most part.

My expectations are for maybe Wright from New England to be brought in for an easy going deal and that's about it.

To me that's not cutting it this year.

I think some are optimistic that Ted Thompson will go out and bring in a starter or two via free agency when the market calms down like pack93z said.

I hope you guys are right, but I wouldn't hold my breath. History is suggesting otherwise.
