Face it, Canty's agent wanted a number to shop the Giants with.. nothing more.. there is no way to explain it other than that.. they weren't willing to wait a day and visit here.. yes the money moves fast in FA, but not that fast. Ted wasn't going to be played, in this case I completely agree with his approach.. The player has got to be at least willing to make a visit and go through the motions of getting to know each other. See the TJ Whosyourmomma deal.. all the teams waited for him to make his mind up.. no one dropped their offer in the process..
There is the trickle down effect that you are missing I think.. say we went out blindly like Canty's agent wanted and threw out a number that was in the ballpark (BTW it probably would have needed to exceed the Giants deal) and we got him here and signed him for 17 mill or better in guaranteed coin.
What does a player like Jenkins say when that deal far out weighs the one he got for a proven commodity?
How about Kampman, whom to date is playing the good soldier about moving spots?
Now I agree with your statement that one overpriced deal isn't going to kill the cap.. but we already have handed an overpriced deal out to Rodgers.. and probably one to Jennings, Collins and Kampman if he can make the transition..
So there is more depth to it than making one overpriced splash into the free agent pool.. namely future dealings with your own players on contracts..

First I'm not asking for five free agents. I think you specifically are misinterpreting what I'm getting at. I think two and I'd be content with one. I think GB needs one starter via defensive side of the ball and one offensive lineman to start. They need a starter. I am not content with Daryn Colledge at RT.
Rodgers, Jennings, Collins, and Kampman are Pro Bowl players and key core guys from your team. In the case of Rodgers, quarterbacks are always going to be paid. I wouldn't call him overpaid and I don't think the other three will be overpaid either unless they hit the open market which I think is unlikely due to the uncapped season coming up.
What Sherman did was overpay for unproven guys with potential such as Robert Ferguson and Cledius Hunt. There is a difference.
The problem with the Chris Canty thing isn't the money it's the fact that Thompson couldn't get on the phone with his agent and at least set some parameters.
Canty's agent couldn't bargain with the Giants because the Packers wouldn't give out numbers and GB probably didn't want to be used either. That's the nature of the business and perhaps the Packers shouldn't worry about being used and do some using of their own so to speak.
The Packers could have told Canty they'd surpass the Giants offer, but they need a physical first. If Canty doesn't sign then so what you made your offer, but if he comes to GB and fails the physical then all bets are off. If he passes then you get your guy.
To me this current regime doesn't know what free agency is all about in today's NFL. My guess is they felt Chris Canty wouldn't be as expensive as they did and when they found out they backed off. I think they'll back off on Igor as well when they get his asking price and they'll settle for a Kendrick Allen type guy who will seldom play.
They absolutely refuse to take chances and it's a problem. It wasn't when you're rebuilding. I get rebuilding via the draft, but sooner or later you need something to put your team over the top. How long is this team going rebuild through the draft?
Ron Wolf built his teams' through the draft, but he went into free agency and gave his teams that extra "boost" that took them from a 9 to 11 win team to a 11 to 13 win team.
Right now GB is about a 7 to 9 win team in my opinion.
