Whilst i'm sure that Greene's influence may rub off Hawk, chances are he won't be coaching him. I expect Hawk to be an ILB. Greene will be coaching the OLB's.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh has about 5 OLB in their 53 man roster.

We would have Kampman, Thompson, Poppinga, Lasanah or Hunter. That would leave a final spot for a brand new pass rusher, probably from the draft. No room for Hawk.

I really want to put Poppinga of the inside and Hawk on the outside.

The "Jack" positions as people are calling it, basically is a run stopper and his role is to make sure the other ILB is unblock so they have to be very physical. No LB is better than Poppinga at being physical and battling blockers.

And that leaves Kampman and Hawk be the starters on the outside (assuming Barrnett and or Chillar are the other ILB starter). I think Hawk can become a playmaker if he's put in a spot to make plays. OLB in the Sanders system is basically a role player to keep the MLB free and funnel the runner toward the MLB.

Why draft a pass rusher?

Greg Jennings could play two ways.

Yo Beast... you're kidding 'bout Hawk being a playmaker at the OLB in the 3-4 defense right? Hell, he ain't a playmaker now how's he going to play that position as a rush end/cover/run stopper?

Tell me you see Hawk being a younger version of Kevin Greene and I'll tell you to get your eye's checked. Have you seen the Steelers OLBs play? If not, watch them this Sunday and then tell me if you think Hawk has that talent.

Hawk needs to stay inside and focus on stopping the run and he'll be an asset... he'll never be the playmaker he was at OSU... just a solid pro, nothing special.

Greg Jennings is doing his best to pretend he's mortal. Thus the "dropped" passes. When he starts getting 14 sacks a GAME, people will know the truth.

Bad idea.

Last week I let it be known that the Packers were interested in Kevin Greene. Today, that interest became official as KG was hired to coach up the OLBs.

He will be the most important coach on the staff... the OLBs are the most important players in the 3-4 defense and if they aren't hellraisers, your defense will suck.

The very same website has linked Darren Perry to the packers defensive backs coach position.

http://urbansportstalk.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/packers-likely-to-add-ex-steelers-db-coach-perry/ ]Weve learned that Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy will be meeting with the Oakland Raiders DB Coach Darren Perry Monday and Tuesday of this week. There is no secret that McCarthy wants to change the defense to the 3-4 scheme which the #1 ranked Pittsburgh Steelers Defense has mastered. Perry has a long history with the Steelers. He was a starting safety with Pittsburgh for 7 years (98 - 00) and has 35 career interceptions.

After retiring from the NFL, Perry joined the Dick LeBeaus Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff in 2002. He then joined Bill Cowhers staff in Pittsburgh in 2003 and help coach the secondary to a great performance in a Super Bowl Title. When Bill Cowher retired, Perry was recruited to take over the reigns of a very talented Oakland Raiders secondary in 2007.

We believe you Packers fans will be extremely happy with the performance of your secondary next year with this hire. He is credited for developing standout safety Troy Polamula in Pittsburgh.

Who would you rather have? Darren Perry or Herm Edwards?

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/38403959.html ] Greene says there won't be any problem working with Moss

Just got off the phone with Kevin Greene and the former Pro Bowl linebacker said he called defensive coordinator Dom Capers last week to see if he could get an interview as outside linebackers coach and wound up having a very productive meeting.

He met with Capers, coach Mike McCarthy and assistant coach Winston Moss, who last season was the only linebackers coach on the staff. As a result of the Greene hiring, Moss' responsibilities now are limited to the inside linebackers.

Having been turned down for the defensive coordinator's job and now being forced to share the linebacker coaching duties might have rubbed some people the wrong way, but Greene said he did not get a bad vibe from Moss about working together.

"We spent about an hour together and I don' t think there will be any issue," Greene said. "Winston is old school, just like me. My first year was 1985. His was 1987. He's a guy who would hit you. He believes in the same kind of physical mentality that I do. We hit it off."

Greene said his job will be to get the outside linebackers accustomed to the 3-4 defense Capers intends on employing and get them playing with the same kind of intensity he brought to the game.

"I played four years with Dom, two in Pittsburgh and two in Carolina," Greene said. "Two of those years I led the NFL in sacks. We were always very productive with our 3-4 blitz scheme. I was really thrilled to interview for the job. I'm very familiar with what he's trying to implement.

"I'm just fired up. I played fired up as you probably know. I played with passion and desire. I have 15 years of on-field experience and my knowledge of how to play this position is second to none."

Greene said the defense won't be exactly the same as it was in Pittsburgh or Carolina.

"It's probably a safe bet that it will be a combination of things," Greene said. "It will be some stuff I played under and some stuff that I can't say, stuff Dom doesn't want to tip his hand about yet. It's going to be right up my alley. It's going to be good stuff."

There seems to be a common thread of aggression running through the Packers' defensive staff hirings. I'm curious to see how this will affect draft strategy. Our defense appears to be moving toward a more instinctual and less reactive model.
