I am REALLY liking the composition of this new defensive staff, thus far!

Part of me wonders why they're being so aggressive in these defensive hirings (i.e., why didn't they do this gradually over the past three years?). The best I can come up with is that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have been working from a long-range vision, so they focused for the first few years on building the offense into a powerhouse; now that they have that infrastructure in place, which only needs a few tweaks to be elite, they're turning to the defense. If within the next year or two we can build a defense that is as highly ranked as our offense, we will be the odds-on Super Bowl favorite from the NFC.

You have to remember that when McCarthy joined, i think the general agreement was that they didn't want to upset the organisation by making too many changes. Continuity was needed. Also McCarthy was an inexperienced HC so he wasnt ready to make massive changes.

When we reached the national conference playoff, everyone thought we were progressing as a team, that the decisions they made when McCarthy joined was validated. It was only because of that year McCarthy did not make these changes sooner.

Then this season the defence went back down to earth. It was only then McCarthy realised that the defence needed to change, the success of the previous year only papered over the cracks. Now he was more experienced and felt confident enough to implement these changes. Also there was the added advantage of Favre leaving, creating more cap space room for the packers. This will help enable them to make changes on the defensive side of the ball. If he was still here, i bet the changes would never have happened.

This is why we are seeing changes now, simple as that.

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/38456749.html ]Perry will coach safeties

Green Bay -- Oakland Raiders defensive backs coach Darren Perry will coach safeties for the Packers, an NFL source said today.

Perry's addition makes it likely that Joe Whitt Jr., the former defensive quality control coach, will instruct the cornerbacks, and Mike McCarthy's staff may be close to completion.

Outside of Dom Caper's hiring as defensive coordinator, the Packers have made none of their additions official.

Perry, 39, spent the past two seasons with the Raiders. Previously he was with the Steelers (2003-06, defensive backs) and the Bengals (2002, safeties).

He helped both safety Troy Polamalu (Pittsburgh) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (Oakland) to All-Pro honors.

Not only does Perry have experience coaching in the 3-4, he played in it from 1992-98 as a defensive back with the Steelers. He also played in San Diego (1999) and New Orleans (2000).

JSonline is confirming it now.

What positions are yet to be filled?

"go.pack.go." wrote:

If i'm correct, the entire defensive staff positions has been filled. However If the JSonline article is correct, Perry is a safety coach and Whitt Jr will be a secondary coach. That leaves the defensive quality control coach position open.

The only position left is the Head strength and conditioning coach.

Head Coach- Mike McCarthy
Assistant Head Coach- Winston Moss

Offensive co-ordinator- Joe Philbin
Running Backs- Edgar Bennett
Offensive Line- James Campen
Assistant Offensive Line- Jerry Fontenot
Quarterbacks- Tom Clements
Tight Ends- Ben McAdoo
Wide Receivers- Jimmy Robinson
Offensive quality control coach- John Rushing

Defensive co-ordinator- Don Capers
Defensive lineman coach- Mike Trgovak
Inside Linebackers coach- Winston Moss
Outside Linebackers coach- Kevin Greene
Defensive backs coach- Darren Perry
Defensive quality control coach- Joe Whitt Jr.

Special Teams Coordinator- Shawn Slocum
Assistant Special Teams- Curtis Fuller

Head of Strength & Conditioning- ????????
