Every year we see the true contenders start to appear in the second half of the season. Say what you like but teams that have played very well in the 1st half don't always fair well and then other teams that start to find the Mo Jo and the "it" factor that do.

The games get bigger and bigger now. Putting together wins and starting to jell as a team and gain that confidence and swagger is HUGE.
There is an additional component to the second half of a season and that is PRESSURE. These division races will start to become clearer and like I said the games become bigger. Who can handle it? Who thrives on it?

Way to often I've seen teams buckle when it gets to be nut cuttin' time and other teams start stomping on opponents necks that didn't show that earlier in the year. So for me it's too early to start labeling anybody pretenders or contenders quite yet.

We'll see. I'm very worried, but the points are legitimate. I have no reason to trust our defense against good teams, but maybe you guys see something I missed. Clay on the inside- like that- Peppers playing well, like that... Not nearly enough, imo....

As for the Eagles playing with a backup QB. Nick Foles has started 24 games, Mark Sanchez has started over 60. The value of the backup comment can be dismissed. The Eagles are breaking the mold and winning with poor QB play and a dominating special teams play.


Someone asked "what are we doing here", well, we are fans, is that not obvious? We can always hope for the best, even though expecting the worst.

If the Packers dominate the Eagles like they have the Panthers, Vikings and Bears, then I'm going to lean more towards contender than I am now.

The true test comes against the Patriots. Beat them, you're a contender. Lose to them, you're still a pretender.



The Jets were 1-0 when the Pack played them.
The Bears were 2-1 the 1st time The Pack played them.

Does that count as beating teams with a winning record?

The Vikings and The Dolphins were 2-2 when The Packers played them.

"The team that takes the field in December usually does not resemble the team that took the field in September."

A team can ONLY play the teams on their schedule.

The Packers are contenders until they are eliminated from the playoff race.

The December/September thing is quite true and am I saying from what I have seen thus far, they are pretenders. They have not beat a good QB'd team, yet.

I agree Hawk that teams will step up in the 2nd half. I guess my question to you is have you seen enough of GB against other teams of quality to make you feel that they will be one of them? Asking Aaron to carry the whole team every single game is a bit of a concern to me.

The other issue is GB only has 2 more divisional games. It is hard to make a move even if they are only 1 game back (plus being on the negative side of the tie breaker.) when they only have 2 more games to play.

I think we are closer on this than it sounds, if there was a venn diagram to illustrate this we would be in the middle section. This is splitting hairs, but my point is that 3 games of losing to a quality opponent isn't significant enough to rule a team out. It certainly indicates that they can't beat a quality opponent, but all it actually proves is that they didn't. There is no solace to be taken here, but if two quality teams play each other, at least one has to lose. You could replace "quality teams" with "CONTENDERS". Let's say there are three remaining quality teams to be played this year (Eagles, Patriots, and Lions) - how many wins out of this total of six games do the Packers need to be rated a contender?

In the end it's too subjective to come to a clear conclusion, but it does make fore good fan discussion.

GB only plays 16 regular season games a year. So you will not see the same kind of statistical numbers /opportunities as you will for MLB other the other major sports. They played 3 teams that now (over half way through the year) that have winning records. They lost all three times. That is 100%. That has some relevance in the discussion.

If they had played only 1 game against a quality opponent and lost it and it was still early September you could make a point but not now. 0-3 is a significant statistic. Chart that on your venn diagram if you need the proof. It will fit.

Fact is, only ONE team and its fans will be happy at the end of the season.
So much can happen between now and the end of the season. Injuries and so on.
So the guys that seem to be "elite" right now might not be at the end of the year.
The Packers of 2010, who really thought they would go all the way?
Everything can change and it COULD happen again!

I'm just not seeing contender from the Packers. The next game they have to beat a real contender is the Patriots. if they can win that game, then we can consider them tilted towards contenders instead of pretenders.
