Oh, absolutely, I understood what you meant and I agree. I wasn't trying to explain anything to you in particular. I was just using your post as a jumping off point. It does make you wonder why he took this guy when others may not have looked so highly upon him. That is totally a natural reaction for a fan to have. That is painfully obvious simply by reading the opposite reactions on this site. One guy loves the pick and the other guy hates it. Why?

I rely very heavily on these "experts" opinions since I don't follow college football at all and I don't know much if anything about these guys. Maybe that is why I don't get as worked up about these picks as some of you do. I don't have my own opinion on them so I tend to think that the guys who study them know more about them than those who may not. If you watch a lot of college football and have strong, knowledge based, opinions fine but even then, I doubt most people have studied the film as much as the GMs have. Especially when it comes down to the 3rd round and later guys.

Your part about him making a career out of taking players sooner than others would may seem very obvious to us but I would venture to guess that the vast majority of fans feel that way about their GMs as well.

I watched one of those highlight videos where it shows every snap in a game. Some things that stood out to me were:
- He penetrates into the backfield a lot
- When he doesn't penetrate, he doesn't get pushed off his spot much at all
- He was constantly hustling, which is impressive for a guy his size. He was already around the play, even downfield.

I think this is a great example of how important the personnel team is in the process.

Thorton played on one of the worst teams in college football. Did not get the benefit of having good players around him. Opposing offensive coordinators could pick multiple ways to play around the one good player on the D line or afford to give him a heavy dose of double teams.

This is how you dig deep and find diamonds in the rough. I wonder where this kid would have been ranked had he played on a good football team that received a whole lot more national exposure. A team where the players around him would be a benefit vs. a liability.

He certainly seems to have the size, speed, and athletic ability to hang with better known defensive linemen in this draft.

I look at this as the anti-Linsley pick. Ohio St. guy on a very successful team with good players along side him in a highly touted run offense. No offense to Linsley it's just easier to find players like him playing for a big time program.

Granted, same could be applied to many players. It is nonetheless an interesting point.

Packers going smaller faster on DL

How relevant is this thread to this pick I wonder?

And to that point probably why we didn't get as many D guys this draft. It is time to make defense fit the players we have right now.

The Arkansas C is Travis Swanson who got drafted in the 3rd round. Looks like Kyri kicks his butt a few times.

How many more high picks does Dom need?

Julius P 1st rounder
Datone 1st rounder
Raji 1st rounder
Hawk 1st rounder
Clay 1st rounder
Perry 1st rounder
Dix 1st rounder
Worthy 2nd rounder
Hayward 2nd rounder
Neal 2nd rounder
Burnett 3rd rounder
Thornton 3rd rounder

We could have as many as SEVEN 1st rounders on the field at the same time.

Only Hyde (5th), House (4th), Jones (7th) and our two UDFA CB's Williams and Shields should be contributors this year. I guess Mulumba, Bradford, Barrington and Lattimore could see some moments, too. Pretty amazing we have two UDFA's at starting CB one of the hardest positions to fill. Gives me hope we can find another guy, or two, from our UDFA crop this year.

I think we've dumped more than enough resources into the D. A lot of young high picks who haven't figured out which way they're going to go yet.

Man, would it be nice for a "lowly" 3rd rounder take the D by storm this year.

EDIT: Just watched the link in post before mine... Man, I'd be lying if I said that was anything but discouraging. He made a couple of plays but either got stoned completely and pushed back (pancaked once) or runs into the backfield with no purpose. Seems to jog after play goes away from him. There must've been some other thing the staff saw that wasn't on this clip.

Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."

Some videos on the guy. Haven't watched any of the other videos on this guy yet so not sure if these are repeats.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
