Haynesworth. Peppers. Suggs. Gross.

All names that various Packer fans want Ted Thompson to sign.

My question is what will it take, strictly contract wise (length, guaranteed money, total amount), to sign one of these premier FAs?

According to Le'roy Butler, it'd take 30 million guaranteed to have a chance at Albert Haynesworth.

On top of that, I think it'd take a 5 year deal, total money around 100 million, 30 million of which would be guaranteed.

I'd like to do some research before coming up with my opinion on other players, but I thought I'd throw this Q out there in the mean time to see what other people are thinking...

While I don't have hard numbers, I'm sure it'll be a massive overpayment, and a financially unsound decision for the Packers. Some fans seem to have trouble over the fact that there's a monetary aspect from signing FA which is just as important as what the player can contribute to the team.

I don't doubt the 30 mil guarenteed, but the 100 mil over 5 seems way over the top. I could see 60 over 5....maybe with 30 guarenteed, but not 100. What is the franchise designation for a DT?

If that is what it would really take, then forget it. It isn't worth it. I'd over pay to get Gross or Peppers, but not Suggs. Haynseworth is difficult because of some minor "history" issues. Does anyone know if any of these guys have tested positive or are involved in a NFL disciple program?

Do we have the players to install a gap sytem to create penetration, or are we pretty much stuck with the system we have and need to hope we can put some better guys in there.

What is evert=yone's thoughts on Chris Canty from Dallas. Could he be a solid DE addition in FA that wouldn't cost us an exorbitant amount?

Unfortunatelly after a 6-10 season, we will have to overpay to get a FA, will Ted Thompson do it? That is the big question we ask daily.

With the exception of a few positions I am not upset with the players we have.

I am upset with how they have been playing compared to how they CAN play. I am also upset with all the injuries we have had.

I don't see a point in going and signing a premier free agent, I would rather give Greg J more money first before signing someone.

Yes, we need to give Aaron Kampman, Nick Collins, Ryan Pickett, and whoever else is a big contributer on our team, money before we go and sign a big FA.

Sign our players to long term contracts first, then go after maybe 1 or 2 free agents.

We gotta lock up our guys. Especially Greg Jennings, Nick Collins, and Tramon Williams. Make sure they're playing out their careers in Green Bay.

As for the money, we gotta take note that this is probably going to be the last capped season. So yeah, we gotta throw the money out NOW.

As for the Peppers/Suggs thing, we can get both Bertrand Berry and Chris Canty for cheaper than either of those two players. We know Kampman and Cullen are good, and we just need depth. Peppers is flatout good, and Suggs is quick enough to be both a LB or a DE, and Thompson likes hybrids--so who knows? But I still see it safer to go with those two DE's.

Haynesworth is somebody we have to pick up. Forget the fact that he stepped on somebody, I'd rather have somebody good who steps on people rather than some fatass complaining about backpain. (Rest assured, I do think if Harrell gets over the pain, he's going to be a good player).

Packers overpaid for Charles Woodson at the time he was signed. A few years later and it looks like it's been money well spent.

To get a big free agent you have to pay them. I think this is the best free agent class since Thompson has been named GM of the Packers. The Packers have a lot of money. In my opinion the reason you let guys like Marco Rivera, Mike Wahle, Javon Walker, Darren Sharper, and I guess even Brett Favre go is because you want to clear cap space. This has been done and now the Packers have not only the money resign their own guys, but also to sign a few big free agents too.

It's not that hard to resign Greg Jennings, Aaron Kampman, and Nick Collins and then sign Albert Haynesworth and Jordan Gross. It can be done and I believe should be done or some sort of version of that.

As someone who used to do sales, I see Ted Thompson as someone who will bring in guys but won't close the deal. This has happened several times and I don't want to name examples or else it will bring back old arguments to the point of ad nauseum.

Money is not the issue. Brett Favre is gone. We have plenty of space, and we make enough in sales to be a positive cashflow corporation by far.

I completely agree with Porky. We have a good free agent class coming up. We have the money to sign are keepers like Gregorious and Collins. Is Kampy's contract coming up, Porky? If so, I was completely unaware of that. I thought he was secured for several more years.

Regarding Aaron Kampman's contract:

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_previousnews.aspx?sport=Nfl&id=1765
(It's powered by msnbc.com so I guess It's believable)

3/14/2006: Signed a four-year, $21 million contract. The deal included an $8 million signing bonus and contains $12 million in total guarantees. 2008: $2.9 million, 2009: $3.9 million, 2010: Free Agent

That's as of 3/14/06 as you can see...

I seen a good point about this could be the last capped year and we better lock up the guys now. But the bad thing is don't you think the players and agents know this also? If you were to become a FA in 2010 would you sign a contract now when you know that when your contract is up that you could get insane money then?
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

It is going to take cash to get a player like Haynesworth.

Just looking at contract like Tommie Harris and Shaun Rogers. It will more than likely take around 11 mil per year with 20+ guaranteed.

I would prefer a couple lesser FA at this point.

Yes, a Chris Canty wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't mind having him on my team at all. Even a Bertrand Berry wouldn't be bad. There's two quality depth players right there.
