Some say he's a solid Hall of Fame candidate. Why?

I am a bit surprised that he retired. I was not following whether or not he got any offers.

from rotoworld

Free agent MLB Brian Urlacher has retired from the NFL after 13 seasons.
Urlacher, 35 in three days, spent his entire career with the Bears. "Although I could continue playing, I'm not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that's up to my standards," Urlacher wrote in a statement. "When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear." It's hard to see Urlacher forced out of the game like this, but no team was willing to sign him after his skills declined sharply last season. An injury to a middle linebacker around the league could give Urlacher an opportunity, and he could change his mind. But at this moment, he finishes his career with 1,229 tackles, 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 12 forced fumbles, and eight Pro Bowl selections. He's a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame.

First, no I don't think he is a Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker.. he was a great player for the most part, but certainly not special enough to be part of the hall of fame. IMO. Bears hall of fame.. yes.. NFL... no.

But I applaud Urlacher for this decision.. he very well may have latched on someplace else, but like other greats for a franchise, it would have knocked off some of the luster of having been only a great for x team.

For years, Driver will be more revered than Favre because he only played for the Packers. Just like Montana and Young, even though I believe Montana was a better QB for the Niners.. he lost some of that ironic nature by playing elsewhere.

By understanding he probably is near the end of his greatness and the tarnish that would have come along donning another jersey... he choose to simply hang it up and go out being fully embraced in Bears legend. He most definitely will be a HOFer for the Franchise.

Like Driver.. he gets it, you can't outrun father time.

By the way... I still think Briggs is the better player of the two.

Don't remember another defensive player that affected game-planning for us in Green Bay like Urlacher did.

Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher announced today that he is retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons. I know this is a Packers website but when one of the all-time greats from a division rival hangs up the cleats, it's noteworthy. Urlacher is a sure first-ballot Hall of Famer.  No doubt about it.  Even the casual [...]

After 13 seasons of manning the middle of the field and blowing up backfields across the National Football League, Chicago Bears linebacker extraordinaire Brian Urlacher has called it quits. Like longtime Green Bay Packer Charles Woodson, Urlacher has been waiting for a team to call for his services this offseason. Woodson signed with the Oakland [...]

I agree with his peers that he was overrated, but still undoubtedly a hall of famer and certainly a worthy opponent. Also star of a great Old Spice commercial. I am glad to see him call it a career instead of letting his fading skills leave a lastng impression of him as a terrible player for the vikings.

Urlacher had monster years when he had the big fatties protecting him from being blocked. When those guys weren't there he was a decent player, but by no means was he ever a Butkus or Singletary. Urlacher was very good in the passing game though.

beast (20h) : Wow, 95% drop in investment revenue? Would be interesting to hear the details of why...
dfosterf (25-Jul) : It's my one day deal complaint dept. on shareholder meeting day
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Probably a homer access credential intimidation kinda thing
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Meathead "journalists" skip this, concentrating on operational revenue when convenient. They switch when net revenue is more favorable.
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Resulting in an actual drop of net revenue of 12.5%. She is from Minnesota. Just sayin'
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Any plans to hold Maureen Smith (CFO) accountable for a 95% drop in investment revenue?

Mucky Tundra (25-Jul) : also, no bueno when a guy starts getting concussions right off the bat in his career
Zero2Cool (25-Jul) : Concussion is worse. Banks probably vet off day via back booboo claim
Mucky Tundra (25-Jul) : @AndyHermanNFL Jordy Nelson out at camp today. No word if he’s in play for one of the two open roster spots ; )
