Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm sure we all can get along. I'm not too thin skinned so I can take the punishment and I can dish it out if I choose to. I disagree with a lot of people regarding a lot of things but when the disagreement is over something that is, for the most part, totally subjective (like if a player was a good a bad pick) I guess what I don't like is when people disagree and they don't respect the other guys opinion.

I know I'm not going anywhere so I will see you all around. You won't see me in the politics section any time soon though. I'd rather argue in favor of abortion with the Pope than get caught in that section. And don't anyone take that comment as an indication about my position on abortion...or the Pope.

BTW sschind, I've been on a few Packers boards since the early 90s (the OLD, OLD, OLD JSO with the dial up modem), this is by far the best. Amazing some of the stuff that happens on the others. This one, self policing, and really good discussions about the team. No real BS... I mean... well, you know...

Have fun!

The origins of the saying "Extending an olive branch"... one that I have always questioned.. is the origin based on Noah and the Ark from the bible or is there another basis for the saying?

8:11 When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.

If it is from Noah, how does it relate to peace? All clear or safe I could see. but peace? Maybe at war time, safe could be interpreted as a start of peace?

Thoughts?

And sschind... don't worry.. be happy mon. It will not be the last time feathers are ruffled.. just as long as some don't take to plucking. lol.

Some people have suggested that the olive was a very deliberate and well-considered choice as a metaphor for peace, because olive trees famously take years to mature. War is typically very hard on the trees because people cannot take the time to nurture them and plant new ones. Therefore, the offer of an olive branch would suggest that someone is tired of war, whether it be an actual war or a falling out between friends.

In Ancient Greek and Roman times, people would offer literal olive branches. In Rome, for example, defeated armies traditionally carried olive branches to indicate that they were surrendering, and the Greeks incorporated them into weddings and other ceremonies. In the modern era, the branch is usually metaphorical, rather than literal, not least because the plants can be a bit difficult to obtain.

The genesis of the olive branch reminds me of another term "white elephant". According to Paul Harvey's "Rest of the Story" leaders in India and South East Asia at times would give a white elephant to the leader of a strong opposition faction. The white white elephant was revered by the people so it was almost impossible to not accept the gift. Paul said the care and upkeep of elephants in general was so great that the person to which the elephant was given often did not have the time or money to be an effective opponent and the group that opposed the sultan or king or whatever name you want to give the sovereign would often melt away.
